i bought the game 3 days ago and today, i found out something that shocked me.

PLEASE SEE THE ATTACHED IMAGE THAT EXPLAINS EVERYTHING!

Is it possible that this game was mad with (or with the help of) Dark Basic?

for as long as i have known dark basic, I have been told (by snobby geeks who write programs that do calculus in c++) that its a language for script kiddies, amature (sp?) game writers, not even a real language, extremely weak engine and nearly useless because its BASIC and pretty much any sh*t they could dump on our beloved DB.

This is not a joke! i am looking at the real folder right now

Those files in the directory of stalker shadow of Chernobyl, indicate that dark basic pro has been used in this game.

but i am very surprised that dark BASIC is used in a next gen commercial game. Even I believed that it is not powerful enough to run a game like STALKER!

I never even thought that id see DB in a commercial game.

IF, stalker really have been using db, Hell, i\'ll never diss dark basic ever again. In fact, ill stick it into the face of everyone who isulted db in the past

It could just be that THQ made their own file system that just happens to be .dbp

Your signature has been erased by a mod because it's larger than 600x120....

Stalker is barely next gen, since it was delayed so much the graphics engine is pretty dated.

Why is there a dbp exe in that directory though? You must have intentionally put that there.

Aren't DBP files encrypted, and wouldn't they have done that with a professional, studio-grade title? And what exactly does that code do anyway, it must be well beyond my skill level (which isn't that hard to surpass lol). It seems like it's taking two integer variables, true and false, and assigning strings to them somehow. Or maybe I'm way too tired to be talking about this stuff and need to go to sleep

the game data dbp file that shows as blank document in db, i opened it up with notepad, and there was the source code. yet i am not sure that its db.


i am just telling what i saw. I don't see any purpose in making stuff up or faking anything. i am not that kind of person

i did not put it there. i opened it up as a db project. The db editor recognized this perfectly well, thus giving it the icon of a db exe

The editor does not recognize project files and give them the exe icon. When you compile a project, the dbp icon will be built into the exe and thus the built exe will have the signature yellow-on-black dbp exe icon. Since the file in your picture displays the dbp exe icon, i'm assuming that it's a dbp-created exe.

The game does use .dba file formats isn't that basic DBC? or does DBP use .dba for main project files?

Dark Basic Classic uses a .dba filing system, however, DBP, uses DBPRO as well as .dba, so you can view the .dba through .dbpro(sp?) if you got Operating System >= Windows XP.

I was gonna ask on the stalker forums if this game has any DBP coding in it. It's possible that the game exe was made with DBP? Or some close variant

The big question here though that cannot be simply attributed to files using similar extensions is why there is a dbp-created exe in that directory. My guess is that PAGAN put it there as a ruse.

Its possible, but I read in the stalker forums that some modifications to the .dba files can help mod that game, so its quite possible that the exe is actually there, let me check my directory...I have the game too...

nope in my game i see some of the files he is talking about but none say "DBP projects" on them, its quite possible that he tryed to open them up in DBP and windows XP then put the DBP icons on them after the attempts to open them, or he faked it, I'm going with faked...

if so here is some babble from a website.

Dudes--- it's probably just a coincidence that some of the files are .dba extensions. You can't copyright an extension, so anyone can use it. Because your computer associates .dba files with DBP, the icon will appear. Doesn't mean it's an *actual* DBP program.

Generally though, this

icon is the icon embedded within dbp exes, not associated with dbp source files. Either way, PAGAN probably copied an exe there on purpose as a joke.

I think it's definitely possible that it is mad with Dark Basic. Just off the top of my head I believe that Max Payne 2, Company of Heroes and F.E.A.R. are also mad with Dark Basic, and have said if they meet it in a dark alley late at night will bash it will sticks.

he probably didn't fake it. It's been said before about file associations. I have had similar things with 50 diff programs, sometimes windows just gets it wrong. the .dbX files are probably associated with dbp on his computer, and the game data one probably did open up to that but would have had errors if it was ever run as all it was reading was text data from the file. The executable can be because it's .dba, windows automatically lists it as a dbp executable, doesn't mean it IS.

I reckon he clicked on the dba, which asked him to create a project file, which in turn created the dbpro file. I can guarantee to all of you that that game was not made in DBP

not attention, I was just pointing out something that i found surprising.

the db exe was created by me trying to run a db project file in the directory which resulted in creating an exe. I didnt realize that untill someone pointed it out.

trust me if i wanted attention, i would have made up something people would actually believe.

I didnt expect everyone to believe me especially when on my first post i messed up by forgetting to attach a picture.

It looks like the encrypted gamedata files happened to be using a db_ extension, and your computer associated the dba file with dark basic.

I'm pretty sure neither Max Payne 2 nor FEAR were made using DB. I'm not sure about Company of Heroes though, I've never played it. But If a massively-popular mainstream console or PC game were made using DarkBASIC, wouldn't we be hearing about them day-in, day-out as the "definitive" games that showcase DB, as opposed to using Starwraith and Riftspace as the premier examples of what DB is capable of?
