I don't see why this post is still alive...the ads are here, get over it. Rich said this is an experiment, which means, if it actually helps them, then they are going to stay. If it doesn't, then they'll most likely be taken off.

This reminds me of the time when DBP was about to come out, and they announced that if you wanted to sell your game made from DBP, you had to buy a license. Never have i seen, since now, so many winers over nothing! TGC had every right to have a license to sell games. 99% of the people who complained, never and still haven't made a game and sold it using DBP! I think it would be a good idea to have a license for DBPX10 and FPSCx10.

ok, end of rant...get over the ads!

It all depends on the level of service you want...

Yeah you could get this hosted on a Dreamhost package for £10/month. But it wouldn't be the best service in the world by any means.

If you go with a professional company with full support, backup, firewall, etc, etc then you could easily double or treble that £200 figure.

I'm with a webhost and I'm only paying euro 1.25 per month (I've got the smallest website package). They're one of largest hosts in Europe. They're a very professional company with full support, DAILY backup, firewall, 24hrs live support, etc, etc. I've had to use their helpdesk a few times and they were very professional and quick to respond. In the 2 years that I'm with them my website always have been reachable and never lost any data at all. Lot's of webspace and unlimited data transfer.

I'm running a second website also (for a non for profit organization) at what you would call a professional company, one of the most well known and trusted ones in my country. Paying a lot more for it. I've lost some data over time, at times the service is down and their helpdesk can be slow. Much less webspace and limited data transfer. I'm planning on switching once the contract runs out and switch to the 'cheap' one.

So I really fail to see why you should pay £200 a month, if there are excellent ones around that charge much less for the same or even better service.

On the web expensive doesn't mean better at all.... it often means you're being overcharged for something you could have payed much less for without loosing any quality and so on.

Enough...TGC doesn't tell us what in the blazes to do with our sites and we don't have the right to tell them how to do theirs.
You have two choices...
1. Live with the ads.
2. Go elsewhere

Crying over ads that have been here since forever is senseless.
Nobody whined until TGC moved them.
And that's old news now...it's not running on CNN anymore.
I am personally sick of this.Call your local TV,radio or newspaper and tell them you are sick of seeing ads...I wonder what their response would be.
Not only is this now in the catagory of "Who cares?" it is also starting to fall under the catagory of "this is really annoying".
Some of these posts are more annoying than the ads will ever be.
At least the ads are there for a reason.
On the bright side the folks from Google or AdSense or whoever they are must be happy that there ads are getting this much attention.

Kentaree was begging me for a post, so i thought i'd set a few things streight regarding hosting and how things work.

With regards to the people saying 1.25pound hosting plans will work, I thought i'd take the liberty to explain a few things to you.

A webhosting server in this day and age is practically the same as a normal computer that you may have at home minus the fancy blood sucking graphics card. With expensive servers dual processors, lots of ram, being looked after, electricity and cooling(biggest costs) your looking at easily 100-200 pounds a month.

On a shared hosting plan (multiple people per server) your hosting company needs to put 200/1.25 = 160 people on the server with you, just to break even. Each hosting account / visit taking power ...

This is where the fun starts.
The webhost now plays a balencing game to get the right mix of people using, nand not using ressources to make each server as profitable as possible. So to make money they rely on the fact that your going to get as least as possible visits per month so they can cram more people on.
This works great for small to medium websites

When you get a monster site like TGC with upto 300 people at the same time it takes alot of power slowing everyone down and that is if the server is powerful enough to take the battering, the customers arent happy, the host isnt happy, the solution ? they just cut you off :p
Big sites need full servers dedicated to them sometimes two or three .

I hope i've been able to clear some things up
