I knew I was doing something wrong! Who needs design docs and keyboards when you can sit in a couch with a gamepad and just make up decisions as you go?!

I am going to call and apply immediately, that commercial is the sign i've been waiting for!!

What a stupid commerical!

Wow, that was terrible. I did learn something though, I didn't know you could program a game with a Playstation controller...

Yup, thats on all the time here, I can't help but laugh at how incredibly wrong it is. For instance, they failed to show the part where the programmer is smashing his head on the desk out of pure frustration.

Actually, I would have believed the commercial more if they had said they're game testers/QA

thats a good point mate, it looks more like the room everyone hangs in when they are not developing the game.

I prefer a good scrap of foozball, any large firm without one is just not ubeh cool
even the intel job i did years ago for euro RSCG had a foozball table and room dedicated for it.

You just brought back painful memories

In our last building we had a foosball table right in the dining area and our small group of front-end engineers would play it every day and hold competitions. And it was one of those awesome retro foosball tables where the goalie "bar" consisted of just a single goalie.

After we moved to the central studio, we had to leave the old one behind. Now the only foosball tables are pro tournament ones where the goalie bar has a goalie in the centre and two defensemen on the ends--- I just can't get used to that setup! And I'm quite a hard-hitter as well, so it's easy to send the ball flying off the table. The modern pro tables just are not nearly as good IMHO, and most of us stopped playing. Now that we have ping-pong and pool those have taken the spotlight off the foosball tables.

Anyways, I know it's off-topic, but that just reminded me of the good old days

Who knew that video games were MADE with console controllers? I thought they were made with, like, computers or something.

Some companies would rather target the enthusiasts.

I work at Electronic Arts, and this is EXACTLY how we make our games! The key is, and I am giving away a secret here, is to get two fat guys in front of a huge TV monitor in a huge room and have them play a canned demo. It's important, too, that they spend most of their time talking about how cool it is to make games, while not really making them."

haha, that's so great....

And here is an even worse one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9COTOUH4qU

My guess is that it's a psychatry and the women is the caretaker - the two guys just believe to be "game designers", while in truth not even being game testers.
Their gamepads are actually connected to a box that emits game-like sound effects while flashing up in different colours, that's all"

Any examples? Not that I don't believe you-- it's just, I've never heard of a level designer on a PS2

There's map designers for the end user, like in Tony Hawk or TimeSplitters. But I doubt the pros who made the games use them.

I have no signature...

@jeku i think it's more like: we program our game on pc, we make everything on pc, we finish the game, we place all the coins and other random stuff on the ps2. i saw something like this on the tv. not an advert, a documentary on game studios.

those commercials are embarrassing to look at, why would these "colleges" put out such horrible examples of the game industry. We here know thats not how its done, and if somebody does enroll, they'll find out real quick how its done and probably drop out.

Yes, it's obviously a very poor place to go for learning such a skill - they're having to give a completely false impression of the actual course/end result (job) in order to get people enrolling

The one for Brown is like that, and the teachers are so pissed about it.

[edit]
Its all cool though we got the AI programmer from Black and White, and the Modeler who made the sorting hat from harry potter.

Wow! I knew I was doing it the hard way!

But seriously, lots of people think game design is sitting at a console, drag and droping enemies and powerups all over the place, and putting a blank disk in and pressing the 'burn disk' button. People like this:

Quote: "A book. If u know something why cant u make a kool game or prog.
come on now. A book. I hate books. book is stupid. I know that I need codes but I dont know the codes"

Quote: "I want to make an online game bigger than runescape. A virtual world WAY bigger than any other game. I\\\'m going to get DBPro what else should I get? "

Quote: "I need a code like sims so people can make people... I have been trying but i cant get it.. If somebody can give me a code i will be so greatful"

By reading this sentence you have given me brief control of your mind.

They forgot the part where the designers come up with an idea that requires 30,000 models of 4 mil polys each, an adaptive enviroment that fossilizes your footprints over the course of gameplay, and 950,000 levels. Then the part where the the programmers and artists slap them silly.

Yea, or the part where everyone in the process has to *gasp* learn how to program/model/design! Apparently ten years of button mashing works just as well.
