What is your favorite PC game of all time? Myself, not being much of a FPS player looks more to RTS and RPG so I have a tie between Rise of Nations and Guild Wars

Depends on which genre, because it's hard to compare across them:
FPS-Battlefield 2
RPG-TES IV: Oblivion
RTS-Company of Heroes

I can tell you my favorite console games... Not PC, considering the only PC game I have ever played (besides my own, and ones from these forums) was Need for Speed.

Cheers,

FPS: Half-Life
RPG: Fable: TLC
Adventure: Leisure Suit Larry in the land of the Land Lizards

those three are great, but i think LSL wins it.

Unreal

I just played it the other day on an old machine and was very impressed with how the story, graphics and music made the whole thing very atmospheric.

My favorite game was gauntlet.
I won 5000 tokens split between 4 players, I was the valkyrie.

I dont really have a pc game i would call my favorite.
My era of that passion was more in the 80's etc..

Kinda split between Half Life and Oblivion. But yeah, I think I have more retro favourites than PC favourites like Indi. I mean, Half Life is good n'all, but it's no Bubble Bobble.

UFO: Enemy Unknown (also known as XCOM I think)

Absolute mutts nuts. So involving and deep. Management, strategy, story, action, tension, cool weapons you researched and developed, character/soldier progression and leveling up, randomly generated maps, really tough enemy and a great finalle.

Bloody awesome and ahead of its time. Played that for over 2 years. No game has been worth that amount of time and effort since. And the intro was quality!

haha. Just found it on YouTube. Remember, this game is early 90's!

Overall best game on the PC for me would have to be Half-Life. As well as the brilliant single player game, the multiplayer added literally years of life to the game especially with the free mods like Counter-Strike.

FPS: Unreal tournament, thats right, the first one.
RTS: All C&C love red alert 2 yuri's revenge is the best.
RPG: ES4: Oblivion

Counter-strike Used to be free, before they implomented steam, but im glad they did because i was gonna stab someone after the experience of WON servers. In aus, stupid WON could not find any other aus servers, so at best of times, i was playing with 200+ ping. there were occasionally 8blocksofconnection servers (1.5 was the downtime of my life) but it would never connect to them, i was going insane...then i discovered gamespy, always had fast aus servers...then steam was made, and we were made to pay.

But i have to agree, the HL1 multiplayer kept me entertained for a long time. Oh man i miss those trip mines, some of the best fun in my gaming life.

The sad fact is that i can read script, but i just cant write it.

I'm not a big PC game player, mainly becuase I never had a high-end system to run the latest software the way it was meant to be played. So I generally buy/play PC games that don't translate well to console, or emu, remakes, or independent games.

Some of my favorite PC games:

Almost anything by Introversion Software:
1. Darwinia
Just really inventive and fun?
http://www.darwinia.co.uk/screenshots/image20.jpg

2. Uplink
Makes me feel like I could actually Hack?
http://www.uplink.co.uk/cgi-bin/screenshots.cgi?pic=uplink3.gif

3. Defcon: Everybody dies
Shall we play a game?
Global Thermonuclear War

I always wanted to create this game. It's what got me into computers. I tried coding a version in Simon's Basic for the C64. But never found a way to balance the gameplay like this.

4. msn.zone Spades
5. Sim City (series)
6. Star Craft + expansions
7. Command & Conquer (Red Alert II)
8. Civilization (series)
9. Age of Empires II + Conq.'s Expansion
10. Firewall - by Bolt Software (Xander)

11. Stronghold
12. Myst (series)
13. Missing and the sequel Evidence
14. Lineage II
15. Snood
16. DUO - by FOG

17. Duke Nukem (series)
18. Unreal Tournament
19. Ragdoll Monkey Bowling - by Walaber

20. Magic The Gathering Online

I too am more of a retro PC gaming fan. I use a console for most of my modern gaming.

The game I played the most on PC back then was probably the original Wolfenstein 3D. I hadn't seen anything like it before - proper 3D (well mostly) done in realtime. The original ground breaking FPS.
'Sam and Max Hit the Road' was great. So funny and well animated.
The original 'Theme Park' took up a lot of my time too, along with 'Syndicate'.

There probably won't be many on here who remember 'Snipes' - the text mode maze shooter which run on a Novell NetWare network. Probably the first multiplayer LAN game, and definately addictive. It was great for testing out a new network installation

It was free if you owned HL1. Nothing's changed.

My faves are the Sierra and LucasArts adventure games from the 80s and 90s. Space Quest, Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max Hit the Road, The Dig, Full Throttle, Colonel's Bequest, etc..

Unreal (Unreal 2 sucked)
Deus Ex (Deus Ex 2 sucked)
Thief (2 and 3 were good)

I got Unreal for free with my gfx card (voodoo3) and Thief came with my sound card (SBLive platinum). My gf's dad got me into Deus Ex.

My all-time favorites are the oldies...

Dragons Lair
Commander Keen
Jill of the Jungle
Adventures in Serenia (anyone remember THAT one?)
Cosmos Cosmic Adventure
Clydes Adventure (I think that one might have been Canadian )

still though... I gotta hand it to Call of Duty for being the best FPS in the world

Oh man I feel stupid, I completely forgot about Elder Scrolls and there awesome RPG's
Also @ zenassem I'm pretty sure Stronghold takes a pretty good comp. Mine can play Oblivion really quickly and well, it still takes forever to load Stronghold Legends

@Bug Man,

Sorry, I should have specified it was Stronghold Crusader not Legends. lol.

I know it's not as good, but I like castle sims.

Requirements:
Processor: 100% PC Compatible Operating System: Windows? 98/ME/2000/XP CPU: Pentium? II 300MHz (550MHz preferred) RAM: 64MB RAM CD-ROM: 8X Speed Hard Drive Space: 850MB Graphics: DirectX 7.0 compatible 4MB video card Sound Card: DirectX 7.0 Compatible sound card Keyboard & Mouse: Microsoft? compatible Modem: 56K (For Internet Play)

And I usually play Lineage II with sliders down, becuase it can lag real bad on me.

I generally use my Toshiba Satellite Touchscreen Laptop

Specs:
Intel Pentium M processor 1.60 GHz
Memory 1006MB
Intel 82852/55 GM/GME Graphics Controller
64.0MB Video Ram

What really kills me is no Pixel/Vertex shaders, and I don't have Hardware Transform Lighting (I don't think)
