I thought this might be a fun topic to help pass the day.

Supposedly great games I've never tried:

- Any Final Fantasy
- Diablo series

Supposedly great games I've never beaten:

- Any Mario Bros. game (for any system)

Supposedly great games I've tried but can't see the big deal:

- Pacman

Feel free to add your own categories to these

- Heretic II

That’s all I can bring to mind at the moment.

Hehe, IV and X weren't the best ones, it's VI, VII, VIII, IX and XII that people seem to really love.

I'll agree with those. I tried sims, was bored the second my guy died of hunger at the feet of the pizza delivery man. (wasn't too happy) And I got arx fatalis with some hardware I bought (forget which) and I found it quite boring.

Games Never Tried:
Call of Duty

Games Never Beaten:
Romance of three Kingdoms III: I am usually good about playing games through, no hint books walkthroughs etc, but the battles near the end of this were so damn hard.

Punch Out Arcade Version: Man sandman was always too darn fast for me.

No Big Deal:
Any Final Fantasy since #3(6) too many cut scenes too little game.
WoW: Thats right go collect 25 x grinda grinda, so boring so quick.
Unreal: fun over really quick, wee capture the flag, wee frag, wee who cares.

I would say close to 50/50, I'm no master by far, but pretty good with fps controls and leading a target. I just find games like this a little tiring and they lose their appeal really quickly. I would have more fun draggin all the guys out to a paintball field and shooting em up for real.

That's how I felt about the two that I've played (X and X-2). They were like watching a movie, walking 15 feet, fighting an enemy that suddenly appears in a boring turn-based combat, then going into another 5 minute cutscene.

Well Final Fantasies are story games like Kingdom Hearts.. What i mean by stoy game is that the game keeps u always with the story so u arent like wtf whats going on? And after playing those games it will be intresting more to play again cuz some parts of the story what u remember about the game was bit unclear.. This is why many FF fans are discussing lot of these games in net..

Myself i really enjoyed FFIV,FFVII,FFVIII(Fav),FFIX,FFX and FFXI(Sadly no money to play it now tough..)

But now on-topic!

Supposedly great games I've never tried:

- Like half of Zelda series ( I dont have all of those consoles )
- Devil May Cry
- Tales of the Abyss ( I really want to! )
- Tales of Symphonia ( This too! )

Supposedly great games I've never beaten:

- MSG (Thats true.. My little brother broke the CD.. But its loong time ago)
- Final Fantasy X ( I dont have ps2 but i have completed like 80%-90% of the game on my sisters ps2.. )

Supposedly great games I've tried but can't see the big deal:

- WoW
- Soldat

The monkey island games. I love adventures and have played most of the Lucasarts stuff to death (DOTT is like the best point and click adventure game ever created IMHO - install it on your PDA now!) but some reason I just never bothered with monkey island. Didn't even buy it or load up a demo even. Weird eh?

Oh and the Command and Conquer series is a good one to have completely and utterly missed. Although I really am not a big fan of the genre.

Cheers

Cool topic Jeku. Off the top of my head:

Never Played
The Halo series

Never Beaten
My fave game of all time is Ufo: Enemy Unknown, but I only ever beat that by cheating for loads of cash and supplies.

No big deal
Half Life 2 I found really uninspiring.
C&C games after red alert, and especially the newest ones are just completely unoriginal recycled garbage, and I'm ashamed to associate with the drones that are happy to play them.

Never fully completed And embarassed about

1. Super Mario Bro.s
(99% complete (no level skips), Kept getting killed on the last level on the last world). My brother read all the warp cheats, and beat the game with one life right in front of me. I was so depressed I never went back to play it.

Never Played
Final Fantasy VII
Played all the others, including tactics. Don't know why I skipped this one. I guess at the time I didn't like the look FF took. And I was a little bit burned out of the leveling up type games. I didn't know it was going to turn out to be the supposely the best FF game in the series. Still haven't brought myself around to playing it.

MMORPG's Don't see the big deal
I played Lineage II and bored myself to near death for a week.
Too many EverQuest, WOW packs/editions : to know how to get started, and my Lineage II experience has negatively scarred me on MMORPG's!!!

The last few days I've been trying to think of some games I've never tried, or beaten that people think are a big deal.
Honestly can't say there are any.

If people rave about something, usually I want to see what the fuss is about. That said if I were to list the games I've found to be overrated, we'd be here all day.

Becuase of this I'll focus on the MOST overrated of each genre.
Half-Life 2 (FPS) :: Extremely linear, story only available to bridge gameplay areas, far too much focus on the ZPG which I honestly played with for a few areas but for most of the on-foot game portions I used the SMG exclusively.

Oblivion (RPG) :: Too big, too complex, poor ai, etc.. it was a mediocre RPG that had nice graphics and a first person perspective. Niether of which made up for the fact it was an offline MMO style game.

WoW (MMORPG) :: If I wanted to do the same thing for hours, I'd play tetris. Atleast then I wouldn't have to deal with players as nakied cubes doing a little jig in-front of me.

Prince of Persia (Action Adventure) :: Original, Innovative, but seriously let down by a crap control and camera system. If it was playable it wouldn't be on my list.

Hold'em Poker (Card Game) :: Simply because they never have any other damn style of Poker in game form for some reason. Personally I've never really liked Hold'em and prefer 5-card stud.. then again you never see Gin Rummy or Go Fish as bloody computer games. WHY!?!

Roller Coaster Tycoon (Sim Game) :: Sorry, but it's just a theme park game with a single ride available. That's like playing through Doom with *only* the Shotgun.. sure it's the best weapon, but variety is what makes the damn games work.

Resident Evil (Horror) :: Can't say much except, Dino Crisis had a better storyline and puzzles that made sense to what you were doing in the game rather than some random cryptic puzzle someone has obviously had waaay to much time to plan in the bizzare event zombie mayhem did break out!

oh and here's a special mention for Final Fantasy. Yes, they're good and enjoyable.. but 90% of the time like in most RPGs there comes a time in each when you HAVE to spend several hours just leveling up to beat a specific boss. I hate doing the same thing over and over and over, just so I can continue a storyline. Due to this FF is specially mentioned as possible THE most overrated series of games EVER!!

Now no one get me wrong about the games I've mentioned above (except WoW) I do like each of them. It's just they're not AS good as the gaming world seems to want to believe.

I agree with overrated!

But the leveling thing.. Have u played Final Fantasy X? Its just so dang easy game with lot of cut scenes.. If u want to complete this game u dont even need to level up ur characters to defeat some bosses..

Final Fantasy X and X-2 aren't real Final Fantasy games, they're just a joke Square-Enix played on PS2 owners.

earlier this year everyone laughed at me because i didn't know what garry's mod was.

and finally, i do not like counter-strike.

seriously there are tons more fun mfps games like tribes series (jet packs, flying vehicles, and cars- very fun)

JKA cool lightsaber battles and shooting.

gunz online is fun.

halo, h2 was a good multiplayer game

counterstrike is the most PLAIN/ BASIC multiplayer fps out there. and everyone is obsessed with it.

I'm not sure if this really counts, but after playing Halo I was left extremely un-impressed and wanting those hours of my life back. Everyone says I'm crazy, being that I'm such a hardcore FPS fan, but Halo just didn't do it for me... in fact, I thought it was one of the worst FPS games I'd ever played. Yes, I know, I'm going to get eaten alive, but I'll tell you this much, if Halo left me with a better impression I might have an entirely different opinion about the XBox franchise. Remember kids, it's only an opinion!

I don't understand what all the craze was about either, I've never understood why Halo was any better (in fact I find it worse) than many other less popular games. It's not a bad game, in my opinion, just nothing amazing like everyone thinks it is.

No it isn't, the games couldn't be further apart. I personally never understood why Halo is so popular, sure it's a good well made game but I never liked it. I however play CS:S a lot.

I've never played any Final Fantasy game before or Zelda, WoW, Splinter cell.

The single player on Halo sucks. Truly. The stock multiplayer isn't much better. What is good, though, is the modified multiplayer (Dodge Vipers in Halo, anyone?) which gives some real depth to it.

I *love* the single player in Halo 1 and 2. I don't see what the issue is. I rarely if ever play multiplayer over Live. I even have the Halo 3 multiplayer beta and got sick of it pretty fast.

Halo 1 was poor single player, it's about 10hrs of identical gameplay and areas once you're past the initial surface area.
Halo 2 had a decent single player.. but the gameplay really lets it down as an unmissable experience.

You want to know why the games are so popular, one word.
Multiplayer

The gameplay and balance really makes the game awesome either playing co-operatively through the story or against mates on multiplayer. It's not just the fact that you can do it, but either doing it in the same room or online with chat. Just allows so much abuse and taunting to go on that helps put the icing on the cake that is really balanced towards a multiplaying good time.

Single player wise, neither are really that good though. Halo 1 seriously took me a lot of pushing on to find a couple of areas that were good. Halo 2 was decent enough, but co-op is really the only reason I ever start a new game.

Halo wasn't anything new either. It was so basic, and simplistic.. but I think that is part of the charm. People who'd never played console fps before could play it within minutes and enjoy themselves. Other FPS just don't really have that sort of pick-up'n'playability
