I am looking into how to make an rts and a friend refered me to DBPro. I am curious how well of an rts can DB make? And is it better to make and rts in 2d or 3d? I understand users here get annoyed with noobs but I am not asking for help, just for answers to some questions.

3d is better because of the way most rts camera's move, but 2d's are good too.

Yeah, I don't think I've ever really played a 2D RTS in the sense of build a civilization, make units, etc. DBP is good for it, but be prepared to spend time learning the language. Anything is possible, but almost nothing is easy.

3D is the best route for an RTS.

2D would be more of a headache for troop selection translations and you've also got the problem of isometric tiling and scrolling which you don't get with 3D.

I'm a big RTS fan and I'm seriously considering starting a C&C type of game of my own as it's the only genre I'm remotely interested in.

I thought the opposite.

2D and 3D both have advantages/disadvantages, but in the long run I found 3D to win.

Also, if you haven't already, you might want to check out my rts tutorial. It's not perfect but might answer some other questions.

i recomend that you do it in 3d.
and be prepared to alot of hard work.
i have doddled on and off with my rts project for an long time.
and start up with an decent map editor as i did the reversed and are currently working on my map editor that i regret that i didt do from the first place first.
as iam probably forced to rewrite alot in the game code later on.
cheers

hi sixty.......
i cant call it an game as the game engine dosent let you do so much yet more then selecting alot of units and walk around and plain stuff like that.
iam really bad at keeping up the pace on the work i yust started again working on it after an 8 month of not so much.
its more or less the editor that is the great stuff right now and i will post some runable stuff of them maybe soon but dont expect to much of them.
cheers

I played AoM briefly, didn't care for it much. AoE was much better I think.

Have to agree with Phaelax, but I do have both - and a lot more, going back to Megalomania on the Atari St (where the fascination with the RTS genre all began for me).

The only one I've never really liked was Civilization - could never get into that series!

I'm giving C&C3 some hammer at the moment...

First rts I played was C&C or Warcraft, whichever series came first. I played red alert more than any, mostly because my brother always wanted someone to play (and beat). But for 1 player, I prefer AoE2. I'd like to play AoE3 but since I don't run WinXP nor have a 3.0 shader card......

AoM has always been my favorite, I actually used to be really good..
AoE was fun but I was so young that I didn't play online.

Dude, AoE, C&C the first few, and a bunch of other RTS's are 2d, they just give a 3-d look.

Simply put: 2D will give a lot of trouble with isometric perspectives and 3d faking (as in AoE, C&C + Covert Ops, the first Total Wars ect. ect.) while 3D will save you THOSE headaches.

BTW, Fallouts RTS project sounded cool too... What was the name again... You know, the RTS in the desert that was his dissertation project?

dissertation? Im guessing he was the one who wrote that book if an rts was plausible in DB?

I vaguely remember a desert-based RTS, but that was many years ago.
