Second life is some crappy attempt at a virtual world, but in the first minutes your there you will be sweared to death,or asked if you ever had sex or whatever.

The graphics are terrible for the system specs it has,so i wont recommend playing it...(My old PC could run TES III:Morrowind, wich looks VERY good, but it couldn't run Second Life, wich looks very crappy)

i don't play it myself, but my tutor's well into it. In fact he's in the process of recreating building that my course is based in. He's also going to recreate a virtual exhibition, to accompany the real world one (which starts on the 1st june, if you're in or around leeds).

If you want to check out a virtual version of where I go to uni, go here;

IBM seem into Second Life at the moment. Don't know what the hell they're doing exactly, but they seem to spy a business opportunity from it. Some guys a couple of cubicals down from me seem to be playing it all day to some higher business end. Weirdness.

There is a special version of SL called Teen secondlife for people in the ages of 13-17, In this area, making or having sexial stuff is against the rules, so is swearing.

I loved Second Life, It was a fun way to collaberate whit people from the entire world. A freind of mine made some sweat cars, while I made arena firearms using a script i got my hands on.

um, no. I've played and I neither gother sweared to death nor asked about my sex life. Second Life is a 3D online community that in large part is user generated. Users can make objects and buildings in external modelling packages and import them to use in the environment. They can also write scripts to give these objects behaviors and more uses than just things to look at. Second Life is not really a game, more of a toy, or virtual environment. If any of you are interested in making it in the gaming world, virtual reality world or pretty much any other field of interactive new media I strongly recommend you check it out. Why? Because it's one of the most popular persistant online 3D worlds out there right now. Yes, it's more popular than WOW (maybe not among gamers, but among the rest of the world). Regardless of your feelings about it, you need to know why it is so popular, what makes it great and what makes it suck, so that you can do better one day. My own experience in it was fairly limited, because my computer is fairly old and crawls if there are too many other people near by. It was very interesting though. I never got out of the training island though. It's free, why wouldn't you try it?

I was into SL for quite a while. I built a casino and built my own Blackjack tables, and finally made around $200 from the sale. It's cool because you can convert your L$ to real US$. Anyways, I don't play any longer because of lack of time.

I've dabbled in SL but I don't really get time to do anything real interesting atm.

Just so everyone is clear on this: SL is NOT a game!

It's essentially an experiment and an amazingly interesting one at that. When I get more time (possibly in the summer), I might try out a few of my big ideas.

I occasionally play it so I can do things like attach a big sphere to my head and make myself look like a big ball of metal.

Second Life is a famous Virtual World. Several companies have done demonstrations there.
It's money has become it's own stock market, with over 50,000 accounts who don't even play the game, just buy and sell L$.

The reason here, is that you can legally trade L$ for $ or £.
You have to actually go on the phone and talk to them to get it directly transfered into £. I just get it as $, then use a national bank to transfer the currency for me.

I like the idea that you can build anything anytime (In a sandbox, anyway), and then wear it, add physics, or if you learn the simple scripting language (As if Jedi Knight-Jedi Academy was toned down in scripting difficulty...), you can pretty much do anything.
I made a Mercedes Benz that actually got car damage. But, I forgot to copy it into my inventory, so I had an old broken down Mercedes Benz sitting around.

I am not sure if Linden did it yet, but the game is supposed to soon have, or already has, mesh sculpting. (Blender-style!)

There is an... explicit community of Second Life. A lot of people don't know better and end up in a place they really don't want to be, because they did not want to enter their real age.

Quote: "Disturbing, I wanted to play second life but my Dad read an article about the second life sex community in PCGamer and gave me a flat out no "

Apparently your Dad didn't read all of the article.
As long as you enter your real age, you cannot go into a mature region.
It will NOT let you in the areas if you are under 18, and if you teleport in there, you can get banned for good.
Since I am over 18, I have to and go to the options menu and un-check "Allow player into mature regions".

Second Life had a problem with cable and wireless connections for a while, but fixed it.

Never go to a place with low traffic. Places with low traffic have a reason that they have low traffic.

Go to sandboxes, those are where I live in SL.

Remember, the golden rule to actually be able to enjoy SL is:
ENTER YOUR REAL AGE.

I know, I know, a lot of people like to say they are older then they are, expecting more respect among the people, but SL is not the game you want to do that on.

The silver rule is:
DON'T GO ON A 56K CONNECTION.

The bronze rule is:
DO NOT WEAR A TEACUP ON YOUR HEAD.

A premium account is only if you want to own land. But you can build things in the sandbox regions with the free account. SL has a pretty decent built-in scripting language actually.

Yea i was thinking about that, i'm going to learn the scripting on the side so I can learn another language or form of it. But why would i want to own land? What does it really do?

Whatever you want it to do. You can manipulate terrain, you can do WHAT EVER you want on it. You make the rules.

Example: If you owned your own land, you could make it to where only you could build on it, and you could chase people around and shoot them off into space, cage them, whatever, and since it is your land, you are allowed to.

Some of the areas are really slow. If you want land, you can build a house on it and/or use it for a workshop of sorts so you can build things. I liked having land because I could work on my casino games without people seeing what I'm doing (because I did it indoors in a locked room). In a public sandbox anyone can walk over to you and bug you while you're working.

I tried it, found it quite awful. Interface is junk, graphics right up there with games circa 1997 (if even that). I could let those things pass if it were entertaining but its not fun at all, sign me up for a pong tournament with grandma.

slow, clunky, junky excuse for a "game".

Like was said before-- it's not a game.

And the graphics are dependent on what kind of hardware you have. It doesn't look like WOW but it sure as hell doesn't look like a game from '97. Obviously it's not for everyone.

Myself, I sold everything for a bit of money and haven't played in a long time because of all the griefers. Some of the residents persist on making it miserable for you if you, for example, don't sell your land to them. Ah well

To all of you moaning about graphics...

The SL architecture uploads a huge and complex 3D world to ~1.7million unique users every 60 days, often with 100,000+ simultaneous connections and hundreds of individual objects and scripts within the draw distance. Now anyone who doesn't think that is an amazing achievement is obviously living in cuckoo land.

The fact that they have managed to get this working, and in 3D should be enough. The graphics will come in time when we start getting faster internet speeds.
