That was a psychological term which is no longer in use. Generally it is accepted to mean foolish.

Idiot comes from the classical greek idiōtēs, meaning a private person, or more specifically a male over 20 who did not take part in the democratic process(didn't vote).

That guy needs to stop some of the partying I think.
