Of course, no one asked why a 15 year old had a samurai sword in his bedroom, in a position ready to be used against a burgular.

I saw this on my local news.
Quote: "Damian said he lunged at him with his samurai sword, striking him in the chest."

I'm suprised the kid didn't kill the robber.

Is it even legal for someone below the age of 18 to possess things like Samurai swords in most countries?...although I do suppose America allows the use of guns, so a Samurai sword, why not, I'm sure his parents would be happy with the mess...I suppose someone is going to somehow twist that and say 'Look what violent movies have done to society. I mean look at kill bill, glamourising the use of Samurai swords so when a burgalar comes in, he runs off like a little girly girl.'

My cousin (who is 17) owns three samurai swords. The ones he has aren't necessarily sharp, but I figure that they would still hurt and scare someone.

In Florida it's illegal to own a hand gun under the age of 21, but there is no law about samurai swords. I'm sure people aren't happy about kids with swords, but there's no license to own one, so who will know?

Good stuff and good on the chappy with the blade.

If someone's going to break into a house then it's their own fault if a kid goes flippo with a sword.

It's a pity he didn't have his arm off. Ofcourse then he would have been sued...

I think he might be allowed to have the sword because he's a brown belt. No doubt he had to swear some sort of oath when he got it

It said he had a brown belt in "karate". I have a friend who has a black belt and he's not wielding any swords. maybe if he had a brown belt in the art of samurai, that would probably allow him to hack at people with swords.

You don't need any kind of licence to own a sword, at least in the UK anyway. As long as you don't take it out on the streets, then you wont be gunned down by police

If I wanted to, I could order a set of them now, but Ive wasted enough money, so my PS3 can defend its self.

The robbers would need a fork-lift truck to move it any great distance anyway. Or a line of robbers, each with their own physiotherapist.

Doubt it, in Karate they're pretty much funky about blunt weapons (even rubber versions) until you're a black belt, let alone a blade. Karate doesn't make use of weapons, except generally when teaching self defense with replicas of everyday items - a bo to repesent any poles - conveniently detached curtain pole, a broom stick, a mop or if you're creative you might make an attacker amused with the end of a vacuum cleaner. However we practice with weapons at home- the bo, bokken, nunchaku, Sai and even the Tai Chi sword.
Anyway, I doubt even Kendo will be too happy with their students keeping a Katana in the house other than as a decoration.

Really? Oh okay, hmm - perhaps little Jimmy can run around playing kill Bill with his mates using his Daddy's sword - okay I doubt that, but I was exaggerating. But at least have a liscence, as you'd need a liscence for a gun or to practice martial arts.

i doubt it was a real sword anyway. Real blades like that are hundreds of dollars. It was probably a replica piece anyone can buy off ebay for 20 bucks.

The law is, if the blade is longer then 5 or 6 inches, not sure the exact, you can't conceal it on yourself, it would be considered a concealed weapon and you can get arrested for it. Though, my friend brought his ninja sword to school to show to a teacher, and they had no problem with it, they told the principle before time, and it was a replica, so it couldn't even slice butter.

Anyone can own a blade, though to buy one at a store, you must be 18 or older. Same with guns, but you still see and hear of 14 and younger going hunting with their dads.

There are several different types of karate. A few of these are-
Karate
Taijutsu (i do this)
taikwondo (don't know how to spell this)

Depending on where its from and what it is based on the form will use different weapons. In taijutsu we use many different weapons like-
Bo
Hanbo
Shuriken
Nunchaku
kyoketsu shoge
katana

If he was only a Brown Belt I doubt he actually knew how to use it. He probably just frightened the robbers with it. Then everyone assumed that he knew how to use it and of course he didn't disagree.

In this country, running down the street and chopping up a robber would be a heafty jail sentence, but carving them up in your bedroom is A-OK.

Those are different types of Martial Arts - Karate is okinawan, taikwondo is Korean, and the other one, never heard of it - yes there are differant types of karate, as in styles, like Shotokan and Go Jyu Ryu. Taikwondo and Karate are different, I suppose it's like saying Tang Soo Do is Kung Fu Karate is very minimalist, none of the 'flowery techniques' or showing off (or at least the Shotokan style is) the idea is to escape a situation with the least amount of moves and energy - everything has to be necessary - not too much or too little, although having the power to maximise your strength and have a lot of power and there is the significance of Kata. Whereas other martial arts do other thing, Tang Soo Do likes their leg work and sparring.

Maybe, but the Kendo stances aren't too different from Karate ones and there are certain similarities, mean we soon managed to spar in our back garden with our bokkens after getting them - using them felt intuitive.

In order to use them you need to follow the rule of three:
1. You are in immediate danger of being hurt...badly.

2. You are cornered in a place you think is safe, like your house or a police station.

3. You cannot run away.

You have to be under all three or you'll get put in the slammer haha, otherwise bullets solve everything!

Man, that kid is so screwed. That robber will come back with a bat or gun and clobber him. I can't believe that they released him on bail. I'd put my PS3 in my backpack and leave the state, become a wandering dork samarai . Poor kid

Haha, mine is mounted on the wall right by my bed.....just in case, you know if somene were to steal me xbox.

Now why would someone steal a console anyway? That's just low man, real low. That's like stealing christmas. For a child especially, a console offers much joy and happiness (yay). Why would someone steal that from a child? Hrmmf!
