Surely at least one other person noticed it was RPG maker Especially another person who was competing in the technical section.

@Gaming Colosseum

You're right. Actually my friend went throuh a lot of work to program a video game for the technological section. There were only 2 or 3 video game displays, his was one of them.

During the pre-show and while everyone was setting up, he told me he saw a kid hooking up a PS2. My friend said something to the kid's "team", but I wasn't there when he said something.

Of course, that kid and his "team" got a lot more attention than my friend. My friend got 3-5 players while the little punk got a good 20+ people playing the game.

Who cares if he got attention? Did he even win anything in the end? If he didn't break the rules, then why care?

He won a higher slot for the 2007 competition.

He DID lie about the process of making the "technology" which is against the rules of the competition.

They only let you lie if the technology is patented.

Then you should have reported him fool, if he's breaking the rules like that then he is playing an unfair advantage against honest participants and those who deserve his place don't get it. You generally do report people who you know are breaking the rules, who care's if you're a taddle tale who's gonna get a wedgey from the guy's older brother.

I should have. Next time, I should tell the other participants as well, then we'll see how it goes.

I'm sure he'll surrender.

You should have just pressed eject, on the ps2 and took the game out, then snap it. Then ask him to go home and burn his work onto another CD, but I bet he would run off to a gaming shop and buy a new rpg maker. So while he was gone you could have taken his ps2 and hid it in a closet

I expected this to be dead by now.

Its just coming across like you're jealous of the attention he got, look at yourself, jealous, of an RPGmaker made game, being one of the worst game creation software available you shouldn't be jealous...

[before anyone takes that a different way, its all tongue in cheek, slightly taking the piss in a jokey way.]

You are right. I shouldn't be jealous of "fake attention" and that's truly what it is. He's getting compliments and being overestimated about his crappy work.

So, bottom line.

He did something he should have been beaten up for, as well as decieve many. He also made himself look better than the REAL game makers to a crowd who didn't know better. Does it piss us off? Yes. Should we worry about him? No. Should I crush him next time? YES! I SHOULD CRUSH AND STOMP HIS REPUTATION WITH FORCE!!!

Let this event show others what to do if they witness this.

Am I the only one here who thinks C++ Nerd is the real A-hole of the situation?

Mate you sound like a prig! So some guy (who is only a year younger than you) does something that has people 'ooaah'ing. Big deal. It sounds as if more people liked his stuff than yours. This crap about "showing him up for the fraud he is" and all that is completely arrogant crap.

Your conversations says little more to me than "I'm a nerdy tool". I don't get at all why you would consider yourself better than someone based purely on what they use. You consider RPG Maker to be creap. Good for you. Don't let your prejudice colour your view of people. If someone like you came up and started bagging out my work I would definitely be defensive about it. The guy obviously was enjoying the thrill of recognition for his work. Granted, maybe not as much work as you, but nevertheless, he deserves congratulations for it.

Where the hell did you get the right to be the only coder at that fair worthy of praise??

Sheesh.

I can't believe this is still going.

The kid used an inferior tool to make a game. So, use a better tool to make a better game. If you don't then you don't deserve to win.

Developer snobbery is all this is - sorry if the little kid got your feathers all rustled, but shouldn't you have more important things to worry about?

We might as well have this attitude towards FPSC, yeah anyone who didn't program the engine themselves should be ridiculed in public.

Did something go wrong here?, did I accidentally wander into Game-Dev dot freaking com? - this community has never had a that much of a snobby attitude until now.

I don't use it, but I have seen several good games made with it. It is designed to help a storyteller deliver their story, I would not say it is an inferior tool, it does its thing very well. As for the battle system, I have seen modifications from the standard FF style combat to a eye of the beholder style combat. From what I understand the scripting is quite versatile, but a pain in the ass to make major changes. The Ps2 version however is not versatile at all. C++ just get over it, if you didn't want to step up then and truly call him on it there is no use griping about it now.

No, I do not think That C++ Nerd is the A-hole here. If I look at the whole situation, I think every single one of you would\\\'ve been slightly pissed by this situation, and I definitely know that in a contest you would\\\'ve turned him in, destroying his reputation as should be done and as he states states.

It is extremely frustrating to see people brag and lie to people who do not know better while you do, without having a chance to do something about it that does not make you look like an A-hole.

End of story for me, it sucks. Next time, turn him in.

Yeah, next time C++ should get all self-righteous, march the judges down to the kids display and kick it over before explaining how the thing that he did was actually made in a package for making them things - yeah I expect the kid will be publicly flayed for such an outrage.

Who cares about science fairs anyway, especially those that have little kids competing with 50 year old scientists, pretty creepy if you ask me!.

Nah, C++ would look like an ass for turning the kid in, the judges wouldn't understand or care, neither would the onlookers, because get this - ANY young kid using ANY platform to create a game for themselves is impressive. Now 50 year olds who have been to university, who gives a flying crud about what they come up with - it's a science fair, not the qualifying rounds of the Pulitzer awards.

Yeah, acting like that won't score you any points at all.

All that matters is how good your own presentation is. Like I said earlier, it wouldn't be that hard to outdo something made with RPG Maker.

It depends I suppose. Last year I helped my son with his science fair project. We ended up getting second place and $700 in prize money. We built a hydrogen powered car. It was made of Legos and a hydrogen fuel cell.

I felt a little bad because we beat out kids that had projects that spanned several years. Years of of scientific work and observation and data. And here we can with a one month project that was 90% presentation. The $700 made me feel better about it though

If you go to something like that, go to win, not to whine. Make something stunning that will stand out on its own, not because you turn in someone else for breaking a non existent rule.

@greenlig

If some kid lied about his work and made YOU and YOUR friends look like you were copy-cats, wouldn't you be pissed off?

Yea, let's drop you into that situation.

greenlig, if you saw someone break the rules of a competition and draw attention away from YOUR work, wouldn't you get pissed off?

And anyone with time can make a game with stock content on RPG Maker. When I was his age, I already knew C++!

@Cash Curtis II

Nice car. It's cool how you can make that just from simple parts. Good work.

I'm just wondering why you randomly decided to post about this *a year after it happened*?? To be quite honest I couldn't care less about the kid. I couldn't really care less about how annoyed you are with this kid. This is just such a pointless, snobby thread...get over it.

Well, actually something similar to this provoked me to post about it.

And the thread was almost completely dead until Robin posted. Hopefully a mod will lock this.
