I've seen screenshots of terrain with blended textures. Are these all done with a pre-blended super texture (in case of advanced terrain) or are there other procedural methods of blending terrain (ie: vertex shaders).

The only procedural way of doing blended textures that I could think up was that on map load, I could create a many different textures based on my base of a few textures with 2D commands and then load that 2D image as my matrix texture and then tile away based on adjacency.

Forget using matrices. Most of the screenshots you have seen with blended textures are done with a modified version of Advanced Terrain and a Vertex/Pixel Shader. Some of them are done with meshes that have their fvf value modified and alpha mapped.

Yea, I gave up on matricies too.

The method I was thinking up would work pretty well.. it would be simply a paint program where you just paint on tiles and edit the supertexture.

I think in the end that would be the simplest and least CPU intensive method of making terrain.

Edit: Where would one get this modified version of advanced terrain / shader?

You can get Advanced Terrain (not sure about modified...) right here from the DLL talk board: Advanced Terrain!
