Ah, I shall alert Randomness128 over Skype ASAP and he has a nifty program that generates the rankings and such.

Does anyone know about this phone? I don't think anyone can credit Apple with the creation of the current smartphone form factor.

Well, when you consider how incredibly irrelevant, invalid, and just stupid many of Apple's patents especially pertaining to the iPhone and iPad are, first come first serve doesn't matter when the US Patent Office begins invalidating many of Apple's patents.

I meant that the patents don't matter, the first company that tries to sue another company will win.

Indeed, Lenovo is pretty new in the gaming market; this particular laptop was released first week of the year. The GPU it uses was released in April I think, so it's new stuff!

Talking of music. I recently discovered these. Interestingly I only discovered them after watching Death Note for the second time (and not the first). *shrugs*

This one amuses me, because the intro just messes with you. You're like, "this isn't Nu Metal" and then you're like, "ohhhh".

Also, one more, just for the video.

I wonder what that would sound like on sitar?

Probably pretty awesome, though I cannot imagine death metal and a sitar working together.

So beautiful…

I just watched a documentary about the sitar, and a documentary about the most famous European sitar player, Ravi Shankar, and it has dawned on me how inferior our European music really is.

The Indians have a multiple of words they use to describe different musical notes, scales, and feelings. We can’t even begin to describe what these words mean in English, because our language isn’t rich enough.

The sitar is also extremely hard to play, let alone master. You need to devote a portion of life to learning it, and can only do so by learning from a mentor.

Has anyone seen the film Steel? At this one part they are so amazed that they've found this 500mhz 'mainframe' computer.

How do you define how 'superior' or 'inferior' music is?

I would argue that European music can be damn good, there's some pretty talented musicians out there and musicians capable of some pretty amazing things. Of course I would agree that music in the charts tends to be nothing special, which is fine if you like that kind of thing.

Just look at some of the geniuses to come out of Europe. Not just the classical music movement, but also more modern artists like Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Led Zepplin and Black Sabbath, which have defined their own styles of music and have been unparalleled by anybody else.

On a purely instrumental level, violins, violas, cellos and the like aren't easy instruments to master. But even singers and guitarists can devote a lot to mastering their art beyond most others, there's a lot of guitarists out there and it's not so difficult to learn at a normal level, but to have the control of people like Jimi Henrix or Stevie Ray Vaughan takes a lot of work, or for European guitarists, Gary Moore or Eric Clapton.

So I think it's hard to say one is superior. Just great for different reasons. I'd say more goosebumps are raised by my listening to Pink Floyd than to some of the sitar players. Not to downplay people who play sitar, but PF is responsible for some fantastic song writing, hence they're able to make my my hairs stand on end. Heck, the cover band Australian Pink Floyd give me goosebumps having seen them live because they manage to pull off PF's material extremely well.

Yes I know my examples are all British, but my non-British ones would be purely metal and that would indicate a bias.

(have to be heard in order, as the first video is the first part of the song)

As for that Ravi Shankar video, he was a genius. You should look up Ananda Shankar, who was Ravi's nephew.

To be fair, a lot of instruments can work with metal, it just depends how you use them. I never thought of a Cello being a particularly 'metal' instrument, except of course in anything that's more symphonic. Of course when I first heard Apocalyptica it was quite amazing to see how the instrument was utilised.

The intro had a sitar in it, but it only lasted for 0:42. I don't hear it anymore after that.

@ Seppuku - I should probably rephrase that, as that was just an premature outburst of mine.

The two can't really be compared. European music is special in it's own way; we have a lot of diversity in the way we combine different chords to create patterns in music.

You'll notice the sitar has that vibrant sound it produces, underlying the music. It never changes pitch, and therefore hinders you to change chords. To compensate to this limitation, the sitar has a far greater combination of notes you can make in a single scale. Europeans have something like 20, where south Indians have over 200.

I also learned that sitar players tell stories when they play their music, usually in combination with their religion and beliefs.

Ravi Shankar sparked a huge movement with the Beatles, which lead to songs like this:

And lets not forget the intro song in the movie Vanilla Sky, "From Rushholme with Love" by Mint Royale.

Solution: Don't compile until you're done.

I think that would actually produce a lot of interesting software.

Is there a way to get #defines to work across multiple files? I can't seem to get it to work.

For example

in template.h #define TWOD

then in world.cpp #ifdef TWOD

It dosn't seem to work in visual studio
