I plan on placing my order this afternoon.

Abit IP35 Pro motherboard - $185(-$20)
Intel C2D E6750 2.66GHz 133MHz - $193
Crucial Ballistix 4x1GB DDR2 800 - $220(-$94)
EVGA 256-P2-N761-AR GeForce 8600GTS 256MB - $165(-$10)
SeaSonic S12 II SS-430GB 430W - $85
Samsung SH-S203B 20x DVD-DL Burner SATA - $31
Sony Floppy Drive - $8

With shipping on Newegg, total is $1056.43. After the mail-in rebates, total build cost would be $932.43. Considering the rebate on the memory, how can I not buy 4GB of it?!

I just picked up a 400GB WD today for $60 (I had a special discount from my store) and for a sound card I'll probably pull one of my Creative platinum cards from another PC. My coffee table PC for browsing Amazon and IMDB (basically all its used for) doesn't need a Live Platinum in it.

nice rig man. I can't imagine how cool it would be to have 4gb of RAM,but when I get my own computer payed off,I'll probably add in another 2gb to have 4. That or buy a better gpu when they come out.

I approve, why must Newegg be so inexpensive?

Floppy disk drive looks like $8 down the drain to me. j/k

Who the hell uses them any more?

I didn't bother putting a floppy disk in mine either... It was too much work considering the time I would have used it

I figured a few ppl would argue the floppy drive, but I do use them still. I've thrown more CDs away than floppys. Plus, my best diagnostic tools run from a floppy in DOS. Win98 bootdisk is still a preferred tool of mine.

I got my order in, it should be shipped out on Monday, otherwise I get my rushed processing fee refunded.

One question though, can I install 32-bit XP or do I need 64-bit? I'd rather stick with Win2k, but too many programs are refusing to install on it for no real good reason. The latest iTunes requires XP or Vista. Somehow I doubt 7.4 is incompatible since 7.2 ran just fine on 2k.

You will need a 64-bit system to use all 4GB of the ram. A 32-bit system will only recognize 2.5-3.5GB if you're lucky. 64-bit may not work with all software/hardware, I suggest you do some major research before you buy an O.S. You should also make sure your processor supports 64-bit in the first place, not all do. Normally I would say 4GB of ram is a waste because only windows vista itself will run better on that and even that is limited, but with what you paid for it it should be fine. It will also help future proof your machine, and 800mhz ram should allow you to reuse it in new systems for many years to come.

Sorry if you already know any of this, I'm just trying to help.

c2ds all are 64bit. I run 64bit vista and I've had nothin but good times. Of course all of the components I bought I confirmed that they work on vista 64bit from the reviews.

If you play dos games, you may want to consider something other than vista, or dual boot with linux and use dosbox

Oh, and one other thing, if you plan on getting a custom heatsink, I noticed on my mobo one of the ram slots is in the way, so I could only ever use 3 slots at max. Be careful when choosing a heatsink or get a mobo that wouldnt have the ram slots in the way.

I was originally only going to buy 2GB of ram, but the price was too good to pass up. I'll make sure it doesn't go to waste, I'll fun playing around with a ram box!

I don't play DOS games, just run DOS utilities, generally outside of Windows. (mostly boot utilities)

I hadn't thought of that. Here's the mobo I ordered, the ram slots seem to be pretty far from the CPU area, but that row of capacitors looks troublesome.

I don't plan on running Vista, most likely XP unless 2k3 server is compatible with the majority of the software I use (unlikely).

There might be a way around that. Adding the /PAE switch in the boot.ini file should allow it to see all 4gb.

Supposidly 2gb on 2 matched sticks runs the fastest. Even on quad core people are recommending 2 sticks, I was expecting them to say 4 sticks!

I went for the 32bit Vista Home to keep all my stuff working, had to recompile some of my projects but all seems okay. I thought the Aero thing was a gimik i didn't wana pay extra for.

Is there anyway to stop those annoying "this isn't vista approved" messages that popup every time you start something?

The menus are crap, took me half an hour to figure out where they hid the network card settings!

I tried Lost World in both XP/DX9/7600GS and Vista/DX10/8600GS and couldn't see any difference in image quality.

My quick review of Vista would been "ok, but annoying!"

The whole point of vista is for the gimmicky aspect!

Anyways, Phaelax, the ram looks like it would be far enough away if you had an unwieldy heatsink, but you really only have to worry about it if you're getting a third party heatsink and if they didn't think when they were designing it

I knew you were gonna ask... *looks*

And I wouldn't say steer clear of it, because it's a fantastic cooler and completely silent in my rig, but it sticks out a bit
