Hey all, I've been lurking around here for a little while now, but I just wanted to say that I'm pretty much back in business. When I left Okinawa I was on vacation for about a month. Then for about a month we were in Germany looking for a house, waiting for our household goods to arrive, and WAITING FOREVER for Internet. The Germans didn't really care whether or not I had service. As it is, I've only got wireless on my laptop.

Our house in Germany is awesome, couldn't be more different than our house in Japan. It's right in the middle of Ramstein Village, right next to the big Catholic church. We're next to the town square where the festivals are held, and there are shops and restaurants all around us. I've always lived in some type of American housing subdivision since I left home as a kid and I've always hated it. Best of all we have 9 bedrooms. 8 actually, but since we have two living-rooms we turned the second one into our master bedroom. Now myself, my wife, and oldest son each have two rooms. Pretty crazy. My office is fantastic.

Here's the church across the street...

Here's the neighborhood and me making it look good...

Here's the house from the back. Don't be put off, the landlord purposely didn't finish the outside for tax evasion purposes. It's fantastic inside. Three stories plus a full finished basement, and the basement opens into the back yard.

The yard is huge and private. All the junk has been cleared.

I admit that I took a break on Geisha House. I was on vacation, give me a break! In any event, I got some game playing time which is pretty rare for me. I've been all over GH since my computer came and I've been very productive in the absence of Internet.

Later, all!

Nice and welcome back, I must say Germany is a lovely country and hope you love living there - plus your house looks pretty cool. Also, how far is Ramstein from Hamburg? I'm going to the Wacken festival every year hopefully and of course, the last few nights in Germany will be spent in Hamburg like this year. (Well it was only one night this year)

Yeah, gotta love Germany. They still have ciggy machines on nearly every street (haven't been there since 97)? Sigh. Don't get that in the UK anymore. That is more of a comment on the state of our streets rather than gagging for a fag at 4am. And don't say we have to explain that one *again* American buddies...

Cheers

Wow, I haven't even seen a cigarette machine since I was a kid, when smokes were $3 a pack. Now they're almost $10!

Well, yes, but that has nothing to do with anything...

Still get them in most pubs in the UK last time I looked, but I've never seen any on a street. My old manager once said they did used to exist back in the 60's or 70's, but not since then really. Ah, just realised that the smoking ban in public places has come in now, so I'm betting you can scratch that one. Unless a lot of places kept them and people buy them in the warmth, then go out to smoke in the cold. Not the best country for that sort of thing. Anyone seen that class IT crowd episode where smokers are like russians?

Quote: "That's 'cuz smoking kills, man!"
Nah, is because in the UK any machine on the street would be vandalised in days. As for the price of cigs, I remember in Dubai in 96 they were about £2.50 (about $5) for a carton (200), and in the UK at the time it was about the same for a pack (20). Main reason was tax. You don't pay any in Dubai. And working there for a UK company then after a year you get all your taxes paid back to you at the end of every year. Mate of mine made out like a bandit (plus £35 a day expenses and free rent and car) and bought a house outright in the UK after a few years.

Cheers

Welcome back old arch enemy. (Were we arch enemies? i can't remember). I have alot of enemies here, but that's part of the master plan. Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer and eventually, you'll get cookies. More enemies = more cookies. That's what i'm hoping for. Nothing yet though.....waiting. Hmmmm now that i think about it, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Oh dear! I've been set up! This must be the work of the pinguin nazi coalition.....That last read bull must have gone straight to my neurons.

I don't know if you have noticed it yet since your return, but we have a music board now. Pretty nifty i must say.

@Seppuku Arts -

Thanks! Hamburg isn't very close, that's up north. I'm near France, 40 miles I think. Near Kaiserslautern. Hope you enjoy your trip to Germany

@Agent Dink -
Thanks! I'm happy to be back to work.

The picture of the house is actually the back. The front is about the same I suppose, although from the street you wouldn't even know a house is back there. There's a big gate that opens into our front driveway, which is shared with the antique shop's private driveway. They just never park there. I use their trash can too. Ha.

Not just yet, it's full of boxes and isn't guest ready.

@Fallout -
I'm definitely under pressure to get some work done, no recreation time for me. Hey, are you coming to the convention? You really should.

@Dazzag -
Germans aren't afraid of cigarettes or nudity. There are at least three cig machines on my street, one is next to a kid's toy vending machine. The other day in the dry cleaner's I saw a computer magazine that had a naked woman in the corner. Certainly is different. However, I think that all the cigarettes make the German women age badly. They all have bitter beer faces after about 30.

@Jeku -
Yep, they're everywhere. In the states bars still have them but you have to be 21 to get in anyway so it's no big deal. I don't think they've manufactured a new machine since 1982, everyone I've ever seen is ancient.

@Oolite -

Oh..

@Bizar Guy -
Thanks, glad to be settled in too.
The house is crazy huge, I don't know what I'm going to do after living here for four years. I'd better acquire some wealth so I can get a house like this in the states.

@Lucifer -
Thanks Hey, I downloaded all of the music you've made. Excellent, as always. It's terrible that I can't use them all though. I'll send you an e-mail.

@Grandma -
Arch... friends? Thanks for the welcome back.

I did notice the music forum, that's pretty cool. I actually posted in it one time. It was a suggested rule for the board, very well thought out...

Surely it's because you can't verify the age of the person buying from a machine. At least that's how it is here, that's why they only exist in pubs now, because then you know the person buying from the machine must be 18 to get in.

Quick question. When you I asked you over Gmail if you spoke German, and you said no, you said you'd be on a military base. Is Ramstein a military base or which? And how long is your wife stationed there?

Yeah, I once rented an English video from a shop and the English section was right next to the XXX section. Big red archway it was. Instead of being all hidden it was full whack open with hardcore posters on the wall outside (ie. in the English section). Nice. Have you seen nude adverts in the afternoon yet? There was a good one for water when I was there. Also saw a Taggart type program where the only difference was 2 minutes of a naked bird. At 3pm. Nice.

Quote: "Surely it's because you can't verify the age of the person buying from a machine"
Probably the reason they give. Real reason would be vandalism. Can't have it cutting into their profits. Kids still smoke like chimneys, so that didn't work. Basically a lot of the UK is sinking into chav yob culture like no tomorrow. Respect for your elders and being afraid of the police and teachers etc? That went out sometime in the 90's methinks. Doesn't help that good old PC culture makes kids almost untouchable. Once I saw a couple of burning cars (all because of kids), how the kids responsible get hardly any punishment, and how the police treat robberies (they don't really) it was fairly obvious things had changed. And that is from a place about a mile up the road from Ascot and Windsor. Not talking Leeds or Liverpool here.

Cheers

@Zombie 20 -
Thanks Yeah, I do like the look of the village, it's perfectly rustic. There's also a computer shop and tattoo parlor right down the street. Now I just need to learn some German...

@DrewG -
We'll probably be here for 4 years. We decided not to live on a military base. In Japan we did and we didn't get exposed to the culture very much. Plus, military housing sucks for a large family. They just don't have bigger houses, no matter your rank (unless you're the base commander, that is, then you live in a floating mountain or something). So, here we are. There is a Ramstein Air Force Base, but we live in Ramstein Village which is not military. They are very close together though.

@Aikicat -
Together we'll take a big crap on the forums and most of the people inside. Beware!

@Dazzag -
I've not seen the nude commercials, sadly. I doubt that I will because I'm getting British satellite (Sky). Sky is good, 1000x better than what I was getting in Japan. What's funny is seeing the exact same commercials as in the states but redubbed with a British accent, like that 'Mommy Make Me Better' doll commercial.

Quote: "gagging for a fag at 4am"

I know exactly what you mean, but that makes smoking sound realllly unhealthy

@Hobgoblin Lord -
Thanks! I didn't actually post a thread a thread about it. I did mention it in the Geisha House WIP thread. I wasn't sure if I was actually going to disappear, and I didn't until I arrived in Germany. The hotel had no Internet and then our house had nothing for the longest.

@Fallout -
You know eventually you'll want to make a game. If you came to the convention I'd hand you a demo on CD. Otherwise you'll have to download it and I'll make sure and increase the file size dramatically to cause you grief. I'll change all of the textures to .bmp and use 0% compression. Ha.

nice house, its huge! Looking at the design, it looks more like a duplex. So you got your half, and the in-laws can be kept elsewhere. I like that yard, hard to find something like that near a city around here.
