I used to have the how to solve it book. Could never solve it without cheating. No patience. Friend of mine won the Manchester finals back in the day apparently. He could do it in about 14 seconds he reckoned. I found beer and birds shortly after giving up on the cube, so it's all good.

Cheers

Ps. Make that I still have the book. Heh, if I still had a cube I would give it a go for old times sake

Of course it can't be that difficult as all they have to do is memorize a way of messing it up and then just do the exact reverse to solve it.

It seems the guy must have gave up his social life for the rubix cube... I suppose it's a cool party trick.

Best cheating method I had was to remove the stickers and put them back on...they didn't stick properly and it was my sister's rubix cube...she wasn't most happy and I was totally grounded for it...

I love Nancy DrewG, but not insert brain here

No, the best cheating method is to twist the cube in a way that it breaks apart and then put it back togeather.

It's beter to just solve it though.

After doing this a lot the thing gets too loose and it doesn't work well.

Wow, that is crazy fast. I learned how to solve the cube a few months ago, and my best time is around 2 mins. I haven't actually timed myself precisely, but it seems to take about 2-3 minutes.

I used to have one of these things:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Square_One_%28puzzle%29

The crazy thing is, my brother figured out how to solve the thing. He was really into those sorts of puzzles. He had the regular cube, the Rubik's revenge, and the one that's 5x5x5, whatever that's called, and could solve anyone of them. He also had a weird pyramid thingy and a few other odd cubes and puzzles. For me the regular cube is enough of a challenge.

It's really amazing. There are these ways to solve the cube faster and faster but the higher the speed the more complex the solution so you really need to work out your brain for a while before you can process all that. And of course, you need to work on your dexterity

Oh, and I really don't see the fun in solving a Rubics Cube, just like I don't see the fun in solving Sudokus. I get so bored from something that doesn't really change. It's like I get bored from playing the same songs on Guitar Hero over and over so I switch songs, and games (as there are 3 out so far on PS2 and GH3 is just around the corner). Anyway, that's just me. Constant change is in my personality, I hate status quo (not the band, they are so-so)

um, why is the guy messing it up, the same guy solving it? Let someone else mess it up without that guy watching, then I might be impressed.

True, for the record it should of been scrambled by another guy because otherwise the guy might cheat and do it in reverse!

Anyone heard of God's number? Idea is that if God knows everything then what is the maximum number of moves he would take to solve any rubik's cube puzzle. It's apparently in the low 20's so not a major amount of moves. Think the last person to work out the lowest number said that the real God's number is probably a couple lower than his program worked out.

I could solve a rubik's cube in about 3 minutes. I just got the 4*4*4 one today and don't plan on ever solving it.

True, for the record it should of been scrambled by another guy because otherwise the guy might cheat and do it in reverse!"

Which he didn't because he did more and different moves when solving it.

Obviously he didn't rewind it, because he threw the cube down at the end

Quote: "Fake. The video is sped up. Impossible movements due to limitations of physics and the human body. "

It looks believable to me. (Wouldn't sound get messed up if it was sped up? I don't know) I've seen my friends do pretty fast, though not that fast. You just need to lubricate the inside with stuff so it turns smoother...

Quote: "I could solve a rubik's cube in about 3 minutes."

My fastest solving time is 1.5 minutes (without any lubricant)

I know a kid who did it in 1:26 last year during school; pretty impressive for an eleven-year-old.

That would be harder than learning the solution

Guys, this video is not faked. Go to Youtube and look up the Rubiks records. There are many videos from the official record breaking championships where they solve the cube 10 times randomly. Some kids do it blindfolded as well.

I still like my rubix cube method. Work on it for 10 minutes, get frustrated and throw it at the wall to break it apart. hah. you lost rubix cube. I'm still standing.

Well, the official world record is ~10 seconds, from the official championship. They have a solved cube, mess it up randomly for a set number of turns, then the challenger has to solve it. He does this 10 times, they knock off the best and the worst times, and average out the remaining 8.

Purely amazing. My best time is just under 2 minutes--- I have a long ways to go!

I can't even finish a Rubik's Cube! But I am going to get a new one today becuase my old one is lost!

But this video is of a 6 year old kid who can solve a Rubiks Cube in just 37 seconds
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9Jq15NqNuQ
However why does the camera zoom in on the kid-is it to hide the timer and speed it up?

I can now do it in 1:30 with the beginners algorithm. (I posted about solving it the first time ages ago in 7 days)

It stands to reason that one of the world's best could do it in 0:10< with a GOOD algorithm.

I believe it.

Um, that's the whole point The judges mess them up for the challengers. Ask anyone who solves the cube every day (including myself), and the most boring part is mixing it up. We always give it to friends and stuff to mess it up for us.

Yep, absolutely. I regularly let my 6 year old brother mess mine up. Thing is, you could spend 20 seconds messing it up or 2 hours, and it would still take me about the same time to solve it.

Actually IIRC at the championships the mess ups are not random they are just not known to the contestants, the judges have x number of predefined scrambles so each participant must solve the same puzzle as all other contestants.

I have to say the one of the 6 year old is the most impressive to me

someone had a really screwed up rubiks cube at work. Nobody could get it solved. So I spent the last 20min of my day solving it. (by solving I mean by using a computer program to do it for me) 105 moves. http://wrongway.org/cube/solve.html

It doesn't really matter, you can put it right back together again. It might even turn smoother.

Of course if you put it back together randomly, there's an incredibly low chance that it will actually be possible to solve, so make sure you reassemble it solved.
