To aid my foosball WiP, I could do with foosball players giving me an idea of what techniques they use in real life that they think should be included in the game. It uses dark physics, so anything you can do in real life in terms of ball control, should be possible in the game. So I'm thinking more about how you use your hands and manipulate the players. Then, any suggestions for control mechanisms would be appreciated. I think my hardest challenge will be to make it controllable and natural, without being fiddly, so all suggestions would be good.

The sort of control ideas I'm after are things like: Allow lifting of lines of players in front of the ball, to allow shots to move through (auto or manual), like you do with your leading hand. That can be done by a key, which lifts the next line up, or manually, and then they players stay lifted, for example.

Then ideas for a control mechanism would be great. At the moment the controls are:
1,2,3,4 - Press and hold to select bank of players (can hold more than one at a time)
Mouse left/right - Swing players left and right
Mouse up/down - move bank of players up and down

Control ideas:
Left mouse - automatic power shot, to avoid the pain of swinging mouse left/right
Right mouse - Raise bank of players in front of ball, to allow the shot to fire through, as you would do with your leading hand.

I also have a mechanism where you select the bank of players with the mouse, hold down the LMB and then move the mouse to manipulate the players. Not sure if this'll be quick enough though. I'm happy to include multiple control mechanisms if anyone can suggest a goodun.

Any help appreciated chaps.

Interface with two Wii-motes - use buttons to change between the sticks, so you don't ever actually have to take them out of your hands

The tactic of passing the ball between players on a line with the head of players is commonly used by pro-foosballers?

hmm. something would not feel quite right about only controlling 1 bank of players at a time, that coordination between both hands should be included some how I think.

Yeah, I'm still struggling with the control mechanism. It's not very natural using the mouse either. Moving the bank of players up and down with the mouse is fine, but using left and right to generate power isn't. So I'm thinking I might go for a trigger mechanism. (i.e. hold down a button and release for power) - very quick tap for light pass, up to a 1/4 second maximum power up kinda smash.

As for controlling both at the same time, that's very difficult without something like two Wii-motes, as suggested above. You can have two selected, by holding down two number keys at once, and then your mouse movements are reflected in both. That goes someway to sorting it out. Still trying to figure it out though.

Well, I dont personally play foosball but I know some techniques.
Moves-
1. The pole slam - When you slam the pole rod into the ball to rocket the ball off at high speeds.
2. The fast spin - The technique where you constantly spin the pole as fast as you can to auto hit it.
3. The table shake - This is what I call it when you move the pole back and forth really fast sometimes hitting the table.
4. The ball bounce - I'm not sure how this happens, but occasionally the ball has bounced into the air.
Releases-
1. The ball spin - When you press the back of the ball so when it goes in the ball spins really fast.
Rules-
1. Goalie shot - When the ball is hit from the very back middle player into the goal without hitting anything 3 points are given.

Control ideas-
1. Using the mouse wheel.
2. There are arrows next to the handles that you can press to spin that handle.
3. spinning the mouse in a circle like a crank.

This isn't a sig. It's me disguised a sig. Can you get me out?

Spin? You cannot spin in foosball... That's illegal. Any bank may officially rotate 360 degrees but no further as far as I know.

If you actually play by the rules that is

It's more fun spinning them sometimes...

I play by the rules
And I win.

Foosball doesn't kill. Chuck Norris kills.

Chuck Norris is a actor. And he survived Vietnam and got a black belt in Karate. And he was undefeated. But... Half of the stuff you watch him do in films and stuff are mostly fake.. And stop the Chuck Norris jokes he is just a guy. And I heard that Chuck norris cried! He cried when he was a baby! Get it right.lol P.s. I sick and tired of these Chuck Norris jokes.
Now back on topic...
I still think that you should use the arrow keys the right and left arrows to rotate the stick and then up and down keys to change pole.

Chuck Norris is an actor, and yes, most of the stuff in the movies is fake. They give him 12 full doses of elephant tranquilizers to make sure he only breaks the bones of his opponents, instead of desintegrating them.

Chuck Norris didn't cry. And no, the doctor didn't cry neither. Chuck Norris was born and roundhouse kicked the doctor to the face. The doctor died immediatly.

From that moment on, while most people wear Superman pj's, Superman wears Chuck Norris pj' s.

Impossible. If that were true, the cast of Epic Movie would've been dead long ago for making fun of Superman. They are still alive.
