I went to see Meatloaf in concert last night in Newcastle Upon Tyne (UK). His voice was appalling! I was embarrassed for him. His backing singers went a long way towards correcting the songs but there was just no denying that he no longer has a singing voice. A crying shame because he was once superb!

After five 'songs' where he appeared to sing only one note, he announced that we should enjoy the rest of the concert because it was to be his last ever (despite already having sold out many future events). He then started to sing 'Paradise by the dashboard light' but after croaking out only two lines, he said "No, that's it, I can't do it anymore, it is over!" and walked off the stage.

There was a stunned silence in the arena and after a few minutes there was an announcement that Meatloaf had been taken ill and that the event was canceled. Which was met by booing, which I thought was completely inappropriate, especially as he was undeniable ill. You could see it throughout the night.

It is a shame that he will no longer perform and although some people were demanding their money back. I was happy to have seen him try to entertain me and hope that he soon makes a full recovery.

On the plus side (if there is one), his daughter Pearl Aday was his warm up artist and although I wasn't aware of her singing career, I will be keeping an eye (ear) on it in future because she was awesome!

this has happened before in his career. he should have hung it up for good back then. no offense to the guy but seriously, you had two mediocre songs/hits in the 70's or whatever and thats about it, youve been milking that and a bunch of c-rated songs since then - "its over Johnny, its over!" Its BEEN over.

Ive seen interviews with him and he seems like a nice guy, but he's under the impression that he's some vocal god superstar which has never been the case. Maybe for 5 minutes in the 70's but thats about it.

good riddance. I hope everyone at the show got their money back and personal apology from Meatloaf's management.

Meatloaf should never have started a singing career, he was always cr@p! even with the editing equipment! LOL

If his daughter was awesome, why didnt she continue the concert! He is weak for giving up! too much money to really for the fans IMHO!

So when I said "Hope you enjoy the concert", my wellwishes failed

Quote: "Sore throat forces Meatloaf to cut short concert

ROCK icon Meatloaf disappointed thousands of North-East fans tonight when he was forced to cut short a concert due to a sore throat.

The 60-year-old singer and his band, the Neverland Express, took to the stage at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle.

The Bat Out of Hell star was due to belt out hits from his albums as part of an eight-date UK tour.

Arena bosses said that fans who attended the show are unlikely to get their money back as it had been running for at least an hour before Meatloaf, whose real name is Michael Lee Aday, had to quit the stage."

Indeed! The night was a failure.

That final quote is interesting. Were did you find it? Meatloaf's real name is Marvin Lee Aday not Michael.

not according to this wiki and its references

Quote: "Michael Lee Aday (born Marvin Lee Aday; September 27, 1947), better known as Meat Loaf, is an American rock singer and actor of stage and screen. He is noted for his albums Bat out of Hell, II, and III and several famous songs from movies. The Neverland Express is the name of the band he fronts, as its lead singer. In 2001, he changed his first name to Michael.[1][2]"

not that wiki's are reliable.
not that I actually care one way or the other

But that is Wiki ...I could go online and change that myself. I had a search and found many other websites that also say his real name is Marvin.

I don't plan on starting an argument about something so pathetically trivial, I just wanted to say that the Official Program that I bought last night has quotes from a recent interview asking him what would likely be his obituary ... he says, and I quote "They'll probably start with 'Marvin,' which is just my luck. Marvin Lee Aday, also known as Meatloaf ... I'll be glad I'm dead!"

Interesting factoid:

Apparently he uses different names whether they are his legal name or not. Look at his movie credits page on IMDB...

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001533/

he should add "Mental Case Aday" to that list

Shame.
I always liked Meatloaf. His original "Bat Out of Hell" CD is still awesome.
I remember seeing him sing live on TV a little while back though (I can't remember what it was for) and he was AWEFUL! He really completely lost his singing voice.

Well, actually 'Bat Out Of Hell' is one of the biggest selling albums of all time. Worldwide its estimated to have sold 37 million copies and still sells. It is apparently at number 8 in the global all time best selling albums. In the UK its sold 2.8 million and is at number 21 in the list of best selling albums of all time. It holds the record for longest stay in the UK album charts by a solo artist with 244 weeks between 1978 and 1994.
It was my favourite album many years ago and I still listen to it every so often. Its got a classic style which doesn't really age. I haven't heard him sing in a long time so its a shame if his voice is gone. I am sure he will continue to act though. He played a great part in FightClub

Zappo, I'm well aware of his music career and long movie appearance resume. Aside from that he is a bit mental and shouldnt go out on a stage in front of paying customers unless he is sure he can fulfill his end of the bargain from start to finish.

I am a little flummoxed as to why you only thought he had two mediocre hits in the 70's then?
Anyway, if he knew he wouldn't be able to perform the whole show well in advance then I agree with you. If it really was a sore throat then I am guessing he didn't know it would affect him until that night or perhaps even during the performance. Sadly, these things happen and I am sure he wouldn't want to intentionally disappoint his audience. A partial refund would be a good gesture though.

I went to see him on Sunday and he sounded just fine :/

That really sucks, I always thought he was awesome. Not just a good singer, but an awesome showman.

His support singers are a different story though

Not suprised. He did two simultanious world tours, and he's an old guy.

Because being old enough to listen to his stuff on the radio in the 70's, and not liking it, I was expressing my personal opinion. Regardless of how impressive his resume might be (and I agree its imoressive) if I dont like his stage style and his music, then nothing about him (historic or otherwise) will impress me. Like I said he "lost his voice" and "quit his career" due to no medical reason once before, and now he has again, at the expense of his fans. I understand if people have issues and need to go fix them, I wish him all the best with that, but have your melt-down somewhere offstage between shows. Its almost like its engineered drama for the publicity. Almost. Can't be sure.

Remember which song ran at the top of the charts on Top Gear's all-time greatest driving song, Jeremy wasn't thrilled about the fat guy having a song on the list.

The power of suggestion indeed. I cooked meatloaf last night. The plot thickens...

That does suck, it's a shame. If he felt bad then he should have just lip synced his songs. It's better than not doing it at all.

I was kinda hoping Loaf would concentrate on his acting after his pretty good performance in Fight Club, he would make a pretty good serial killer type I reckon. I'd much rather see him act than sing, but that might just be the car trips as a kid when my parents would play their Meatloaf tape constantly.

I also have attitudes towards OMD, Fleetwood Mac, Wet Wet Wet and The Communards because of this - I mean why couldn't they be into some decent stuff back then, Pink Floyd or Rush or something like that!. Luckily I rebelled, but my siblings have pretty much no taste in music now, blame the parents!.

Or olive loaf.
