Anyone think this is going to be any good? I've really enjoyed SimCity 3000 and 4, but looking at the Wikipedia article (I know, not always the most reliable), I'm not sure I'm all that impressed with the new ideas of gameplay.
From Wikipedia:
Quote: "Societies will be a 'social engineering simulator' rather than a city-building simulator. Public works will not play a part in the game. Transportation networks will be simplified to dirt roads, paved roads, subways and bus stops. Players will not be able to build zones, a key element of past SimCity games, but will however have the ability to directly place individual buildings, something not seen in previous editions. There will also be six "social energies" which will allow players to learn about the characteristics of the citizens. The six energies will be productivity, prosperity, creativity, spirituality, authority, and knowledge.[9] The city will look, and act, in accordance with the energies the players choose."

Not sure I like that idea at all, especially the stuff about transportation. I've always loved creating elaborate transportation networks in my cities. I guess I'll stick to SC 4 for now. I was about to preorder it from Amazon, but this is making me wait.

As part of my course, we're currently making a game that is based on teaching about Green-house gasses/global warming, etc.

It's heavily influenced from SimCity, but with a higher emphasis on environment and citizens (the same as your quote mentioned there).

Currently working under the name Project G.R.E.N.E. - Watch out for it coming to a school near you! (But seriously, if you happen to live around the Uni, it will)

Sounds like a diversion from the concept, kinda like SimCity Racers or whatever it was called. It is most likely SimCity in some aspects, but definitely a totally different game.

There was SimTown as well. Just different variations of the same basic idea.

Then there was Streets of SimCity, which wasn't very good at all.

Societies doesn't sound too bad, although I haven't played any of the latest Sim games. Hopefully it'll turn out pretty interesting.

It does sound interesting in a way, but I was hoping that the next version of SimCity wouldn't have such a major deviation in focus. I like the hard challenge of keeping the budget balanced, keeping the Sims happy, having good transportation, enough power, etc., and all those things that make it a fun challenge. The reviews of people who've played the Alpha of it consider it more of a fantasy city creator, which is fine, but not the same realistic challenge of the earlier versions of SimCity.

I quite liked SimCopter and SimTower, but never really understood why tbh.. as they were fairly bad, but really addictive.

Not sure how SimCity Societies will play out yet. Certainly looks good, but hopefully they've added aspects to make it easier to get in to that previous games.

SimCity4 is extremely unforgiving, which yeah is realistic but at those times for me tends to mean nuke and restart. Would love a SimCity game that doesn't force you to undertake everything or be so unforgiving for mistakes. In-fact I found in SimCity4 the worse you treated your people the better you could make your city.

If you read some of the previews for the game, they say that they've thrown away things such as having to build those underground water-sewer systems, or having to connect powerplants to wires and so on. Basically making the whole game a lot easier to pick up and play.

Here's a quote taken from a preview:
Quote: "The problem with Sim City games is that while you're supposedly able to create whatever kind of city you like, it's always pretty clear what direction the game would like you to go: a clean, pollution-free, erudite, safe society. Sim City Societies, however, is not so judgmental. Your city can be a polluted mess, but still considered successful, thanks to a new gameplay mechanic called Societal Values."

The quote was taken from this preview:

There seems to be a fair few people complaining about how this game is going to ruin the series. This is why we can't have nice games. Those closed-minded tools.

I for one look forward to this game, though I'll probably end up buying it a year down the line.

Editry: Let's not forget to look for "Serge Adjo" in the credits.

EBA; FUI; Mario Land Ripoff.

I personally think it probably will ruin the series - nothing to do with the change in gameplay, but more the fact it's not being developed by Maxis. I have my bets on the game lacking the humour and flare that all the previous SCs have had, purely because of that.

Can probably still pull it off as a decent game though.
