By applying a few rules strictly it will be much easier to understand the language. Most languages are filled with exceptions to common rules or have more then one genus which have slightly different rules but you must basically learn what genus each word belong to.
Like:
An apple, Apple, The apple, Apples, The apples
Ett äpple, Äpple, Äpplet, Äpplen, Äpplena
A dog, Dog, The dog, Dogs, The dogs
En hund, Hund, Hunden, Hundar, Hundarna
As you can see we use Ett/En depending on genus and Äpplen (Apples) and Hunden (The dog) have the same ending though they are bent differently. Unless you are a native you'll have plenty of problems, even some natives can't get it right.
