Ok, this may sound dumb. Probably because it is, just bare with me.

So it just occurred to me, I do not know what the deference between first edition books and second and so forth. So my question is, what is the difference? I googled it but only came up with sites either selling or buying first edition books.

Thanks

Probably depends. Sometimes they are re-releases, sometimes they are revised and or corrected, maybe they have some added extra content.

So the first edition is just the original. Then any edition after that is like a patch?

Pretty much I imagine. Never really looked into it, but that's all it really could be I think.

SOmetimes later editions have new cover art, printed in a new form (paperback), or are just the next printing when a book sells out. Many books will say something like 8th printing etc, older books can be a problem determining edition if you are not familiar with the book.

Really depends, say like for example text books or encylcopaeidas will have new information and everything updated as the editions increase. But new edition novels still depends - they could have parts reworked, they could be just re-releases for the purpose of people buying them (like the Ishiguro books, the actual writing isn't different from the original releases, probably just the cover design and maybe some other slight differences.) They can also be the 'author's preferred text', that is if the author with the first release was required by the publisher to cut it down (Like with Gaimen's 'American Gods') then a more recent published piece will have all of the missing parts included.

Completely unrealated, but that just made my dy. It's like the screenshots thing. Everything has to be related to computers.

lets not talk about the great rip off that is updated textbooks. Like you really need to issue a new edition of a calc book every other year so people have to buy new and not used. (whats the emote for FUME)

No, like in computing books, the info changes every few months, so like an update in most cases.

@INH
Lol its a technology forum...I thought it was appropriate.

Any who, I think ive got it now, it's basically just a re-release of a book for some reason or another. Whether it be for monetary reasons, or to spice it up a bit. Right?

Or such as the book says the sun is alive and well, but it exploded. You would update your book about the solar system.
