Just to let everyone know, during my bios problem, windows decided to swap my D: and C: drive letters around. What this meant was, while partitioning the disks during the reinstall of windows, I partitioned the D: drive, instead of the C: drive (as the labels were swapped). D: was my data disk with everything I've ever created on it - so all my games, music source files, videos etc. are all gone. Whats more, my backup DVD is unreadable and appears to be faulty.

So, what this means is, all my WiPs are now gone. Operation Desert Fallout, Claymore Island, Hover Racing, Foosball etc. I have older backups of texture libraries and some music source files, but I lost loads. So as a heads up, no more complaining that I haven't finished anything, as it's all gone forever.

But on a lighter note, it has inspired me to start a new game, which I've been meaning to make for years. Hopefully the loss of every other computer related project/distraction will allow me to get stuck into it.

I'm sorry to hear this. Now we may never see you finish a project.

Seriously though, it sucks when something like this happens. You just have to accept it and move on. However hard it may be...

I try to keep my data on a different size partition so I can always tell simply by looking at the size of the disk that I'm formatting the correct partition.

But too late now! I'm sorry to hear the news It should give you a chance to start afresh though

No!

That's terrible. I don't claim to know how you feel at this point, but i have had a similar accident. Altough the backup dvd i made had never been found and i've given up looking for it. It dissapeared from the face of the planet, pretty much. That's interestint though, because i clearly remember having it laying around just before the accident, and conveniently dissapearing when i need it.

I don't worry about it though, neither should you. Look at the bright side and tell youself it has been a great learning experience. Not just the accident, but all the programming and all the work involved. If you had to, i bet you could re-create everything withing a month.

Worst thing I could imagine happeneing

Maybe you could send it to a professional recovery company if you think it's worth the mulla. Saw them recover data of a fried dead USB stick once on the Gadget Show.

Where is your data safest = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyOFIH-6WGs They used On-Track Data Recovery

Did you use DVD-R or DVD-RW?

If it's DVD-RW you should try

1) if you re-installed Windows you may need to install the RW drivers because as standard i think XP only reads R

2) use the same recording software as different makes aren't always compatible with each other

3) If it's DVD-R it might need finalising

Yeah, I would advice everyone to make 2 backups, preferably on different brands of disc, in case one is crap!

Don't feel bad for me though. I've been in a game development lull for some time, so it wasn't too painful to lose everything. If I had been in the middle of writing a fantastic tune, or developing a top game, I would've been gutted. As it stands, I'm disappointed, but not disheartened.

I've decided to have a bash at this RPG I've wanted to make for years. I've always held off, because they're such huge undertakings, but I reckon I'll give it ago now there are no other projects to distract me. Don't expect a WiP though. I've made too many which have never got anywhere. So if a WiP turns up, it'll be when significant progress have been made.

Maybe this is a blessing in disguise.

I don't know, but for some reason I think that this will be a step forward. Naturally, this totally sucks and of course, I'd have loved to see Claymore Island and ODF finished, but I think this time you'll do everything perfectly from the start and make sure it gets finished.

I do recommend you to post a WIP, though! We all want to see what the home of the cool looking, but completely unfinished compendium of games, never coming to a store near you, comes up with.

Or just drop me an e-mail when you've got something WIP-worth. That'd do for me. :p

I recommend having a good external hard drive, say, 500 GBs or so, and do incremental backups on it every week or so.

Yeah. I've always been quite good with backups tho. I thought a reliable HD used specifically for files (all windows stuff done on another drive), which is also backed up onto a DVD would've been enough. Unfortunately, I was just really unlucky with deleting the stuff myself, and the backup dying. I may look into a DVD recovery program though, but it's not looking good.

True! It will almost be a shame if it actually gets done.

I back up on an external now, as well as having certain files that auto update to Xdrive so in case of something earthshattering like a fire, I can still get my data.
