For those that don't frequent the Dark GDK board, some HUGE news was released today:

From Rick Vanner:
Quote: "We are proud to announce a promotion with Microsoft.

The freeware version of GDK is now free to use.

Details here:

http://www.microsoft.com/express/samples/GameCreators/

Notes:
As of today the commercial version raises to $499
If you own the free ware version you can still purchase the commercial version at the old upgrade price.

TGC Team"

This is pretty amazing stuff! Dark GDK is now available FREE with the new version of VC++ Express 2008. It doesn't get any bigger than Microsoft!

Pat yoursleves on the back TGC! This is quite the accomplishment!

Probably, but why? VC++ Express 2008 is free, so why not update?

Yay! Well done!

Does that mean we can still release finished things as freeware on the forums, etc? (ha ... as if I ever finish anything in DBPro, but I guess that's because I'm horrible at modeling and texturing)

[EDIT] Hmm...comes with some free media...

Does anyone know what the difference is between the Freeware version and the Commercial version? Is it just the licence?

On a previous thread I did predict M$ would buy up TCG stuff and give it away for free because frankly the XNA thing is a bit sucky for home brew game making.

Looks like they are testing how popular it will be.

Hmmmm...though I see very little use in using DarkBASIC Pro now that I can do the same things in OOP...

...except for the fact that my programs will probably sprout a large number of memory leaks...

And there are bugs, and you can't sell the games without a separate license, and not all of DBpro's commands are in the Dark GDK, and the only IDE you can use is VS '08, and the only upside to that IDE is the debugger, and the list goes on.

I will most likely stick to DBpro, just because i don't like VS. It doesn't appeal to me much.

Although that doesn't mean i won't take a peek...

Look. It's like the whole page is revolving around DGK and TGC, not the other way round!

I'll never finish anything worth selling

I don't mind that IDE, I use it all the time for C#, and the Intellisense is nice.

Microsoft haven't bought anything. They have entered into a partnership that allows them to ship DarkGDK with Visual Studio Express 2008

i don't get it... why does DarkGDK need a commercial license and DBP doesn't?

Excuse me?

You get the whole GDK and compiler completely for free, and then you ask why you have to pay if you actually try and make some money from it?

I really don't believe you said that.

Let's be honest people - most of what gets made stays here on the forums. Who cares about a license, the best suite of software ever made has been combined and is being given away!!!

I couldn't download the entire VS2008 DVD fast enough. 15% of the entire thing already. My Internet is even excited.

Great job TGC!!

Question - will Dark GDK work with Visual Basic?

Even so, it's still a valid question.

Agreed. How much is the commercial license? I would hope it would be just as much as dbp normally. Although I wouldn't doubt they would try to make it more expensive as it would be more powerful in vc++.

Never mind, I looked it up, $499, OUCH!

You have a choice - buy DBPro and get a free commercial license, or download for free the GDK & compiler, but pay for your commercial license if you ever have something to sell.

Why begrudge TGC making their cut from their software that they are giving away free along the way?

@Cash,
I believe that ApexNow is currently putting together a version of his .NET wrapper for distribution right now.

There always has been a different license policy (well before the MS partnership), all we're doing is continuing that. GDK is a different level of product, aimed at a different level of developer.

Is this for .NET as well? Some of us already purchased this "freeware" license.

.NET soon (Jan 2008 I have heard from Paul (Apex))
I think they will honor the upgrade to commercial version at the original commercial price diff for freeware onwers ($140 usd), but dont quote me.

then...
DGDK.NET 2005 Freeware 60$
DGDK.NET 2005 Commercial 200$
(Freeware can upgrade to Commercial for the diff of 140)

now...
DGDK.NET 2008 Freeware 0$
DGDK.NET 2008 Commercial 499$
(owners of Freeware 2005 can upgrade to 2008 Commercial for 140 or 200) - not sure, this is how it sounded to me.

Sweet, now us plugin developers can work on plugins for DGDK too. Out of curiosity, will anything else happen with this partnership with MS <My favorite company>? For example, will DGDK (Free edition) be distributed along with other editions besides express? Will TGC benefit from other things besides free advertisement from MS? (For example, will they perhaps be allowed to develop their products for Xbox without worrying too much about the legal side of things? I know that sounds a bit pushing it, and I don't expect it, but it'd be cool to know)

Cheers,

-naota
