Ok... last month I posted a topic that I was designing a website for a local dog breeder. Well, she works at an IT company. Basically her boss wants to sub out small business website designs to me. Starting January I will possibly be a really really really busy person. This is ...HUGE... for me. If this works out and stays a steady flow I could be making at least $40,000 a year out of my bedroom... I'm only 19 with no college education or formal training. This could be the answer to any issues I will ever have with paying for art school and whatever else. I am so happy but so nervous right now. I need to go teach myself alot of stuff. I'm confident I can do it, but I really need to get cracking on some stuff here.

I just was overjoyed and had to share it with everyone!

LOL... well that was the only way I could describe it. My time will be all but gone until I get the first wave of sites done and I don't know how qualified I actually am for such a job. But if it works I will be so well off its ridiculous. With that kinda money the possibilities are near endless for a guy like me who's making around 15k a year right now at most...

If it's a freelance job make sure you're aware of how much you'll be paying in taxes and expenses, your 40k a year job could turn into a 20k a year job after taxes, including having to file all your own taxes (or hire an accountant to do it) and pay your own insurance and such, you could make more money at your current job!

But if you're going to be a full fledged employee at this company, rock on!

Yeah, I'm not sure how it will all go down just yet. I really need to talk with her again soon about all this. My dad has an accountant who is really good so I'll have to figure it all out.

Yeah but is it really? Retailers are too stubborn to change their prices yet so it might end up being worth less in the long run.

Hah, nice. You're kinda like me, then. If I get the job I'm currently going for, I work from home as well (although I have to go to office sometimes) and I make about that. If I get the job. I hope I do. They did invite me to an interview, and the guy interviewing me is a friend of mine who promised to try and talk me in.

Hey Aikicat, funny how that works. I never thought I'd get a job doing any sort of programming and now I might have a full time web programming/graphics design job. If I get bogged down or something maybe we could work together that would be cool. Or maybe you can sub for the same company... Who knows when I talk with the lady more we'll see how for real this is and what potential it has

EDIT:

Actually, MISoft Studios (Matt Rock's company) needs another artist for one of our projects and there's some chance for some profit in it for you. Your vector style art could be very nice for this project. If you are interested contact me on AIM or MSN and we might be able to work something out. A decent profit isn't 100% guaranteed but if you have some extra time it might be worth the gamble. I've sunk alot into it myself, so here's hoping. Heh, between the possible new job and possible success with MISoft I might have alot of money next year, lol.

If you can forward my folio to them, that would be great dude.

And something tells me Matt Rock's company is not going to be a paying company. Please bear in mind that I have rent to pay, and if I were to commit to any work, it would have to be serious work as I'd have to take time off from my day job. You guys might crank out some profit, but a "you get paid if it sells" system just wouldn't work for me. Keep me posted though. You on msn now?

Funny how things work like that, I decided to learn Flash for an idea my wife had, that turned into some contract work within a month and a few months later a full time job from home. If you are in the US and end up a contractor, there are alot of things you will need to do like pay 13% to Social Security rather than 6.5% you pay if an actual employee and your boss soaks up the other half. You also usually pay estimated taxes each quarter on money you expect to make during that quarter (great to be taxed on money you have not even made yet).

If you work from home in the design industry, there are a lot of (legal) things you can do to declare less taxes and not pay as much. There are also a few less-than-honest ways.

Out of interest, what exactly is a decent/average wage for this kind of sector in the US/Canada?

Not sure on the average, but a few jobs ago I was working for an international company doing their client's corporate intranets. These were the internal sites for their employees--- i.e. not for public. I was making $45k CDN a year, but honestly felt it was not enough for what I was doing, and I live in one of the most expensive parts of North America. The clients were some of the largest Swiss banks in the world, insurance outfits, drug companies, etc. That being said there were only 10 employees at the company and I couldn't ask for a raise for only being there for 2 months. It was all PHP and MySQL work, and absolutely no design. The lead programmer told me he was making over $75k a year.

$40k for an entry-level job for a 19 year old is really good I think

Really good? If I was making even 30k a year, I would be in heaven.

I guess it's different stages in life. Someone Jeku's age might think 40k a year is "just alright" and "good for a 19 year old", but for someone with no education, that's a ridicules salary. People spend 4 years in school to start out with that salary.

That's $20/h. Most fresh designers out of school make $15-$17 and hour and climb their way out. (Due to the over saturated graphic design industry)

Ouch, I should hope not The job I was referring to was my first job after I graduated, and I was disappointed. Of course, I was happy that I had a real job with a real salary, and it was larger than anything I'd had before, but I knew it was a pittance in this industry.

Of course I was 24 at the time and married, so I took the job If I was 19 and single with no kids, the $20/hr job is great.

As for the design sector, I have no idea what the average wage is, but I know it's lower than a typical software engineer wage and has a lower salary ceiling.

Look it up, starting junior designers pull in 30k average. Not talking about programmer earnings.

Well, I'm currently a student living alright on 12k a year, so I figure I'd be pretty ballin' at 30k.

Or maybe that was a joke I missed?

Maybe it's a lot more expensive to live in Vancouver than Toronto, but not from what I've heard.

$12k a year is what---- $800 a month or so after taxes? My condo rent costs more than that, so already I'd be screwed. Then there's car insurance, car payments, internet, cell phones, groceries, gas, etc. etc.

I understand your point, and yes, $12k to $30k is a good jump, but $12k doesn't even seem like minimum wage.

currently minimum wage in the US is $5.85
http://www.laborlawcenter.com/federal-minimum-wage.asp?gclid=CNmZy_Dw7o8CFQspFQod9imbKg

so that would make it about $11,232 per year (Assuming 4 weeks of non-payed vacation a year which is maybe too much, since you might get payed vacation).

so yeah around 12k in the US

It'd be nice to have a little income to spend but there's two problems:

-Time, or lack of therein what with moving house and therefore schools at the beginning of the final GCSE year

-Where is one supposed to get a job not cleaning out sheep or driving a tractor (neither of which I can or want to do) in a market town?

Not my first choice of place to live, but never mind.

Since the other one was scaring you guys so much...

It's fine when you are a student, but when you want to raise a family, buy a house, buy a car etc etc. Things probably get a bit more expensive.

Jeku didn't mention anything about a family, he merely asked how one could possibly live on 30k.

I work a part-time student job for just a dollar above minimum wage ($9) which is about 1k a month after taxes with the hours I work. There is a thing called budgeting...which includes not owning a car.
