FIFA, quality-wise, has been behind on PES/WE since the beginning. It appeared to catch up a bit last years, but it's falling behind again.

FIFA is an example of "never change a winning team".

Metacritic gives them the exact same score (08 versions).

I dunno, in my opinion FIFA 08 is simply astounding, it really does feel like they genuinely put more work into it than the last few games, like, you can genuinely see the differences without really looking for them, design-wise.

Ah, well, let FIFA08 be the only FIFA I've not yet played. Nor have I played PES2008... PES isn't much of a problem, but FIFA is: none of my friends bought it (all PES junkies) and I don't have the money for it at the moment with all the ubercool titles coming out. But, good news, we are considering an item on soccer games in U3, and a PES/FIFA mashup would be nice stuff for such an article. In the end, FIFA (07) remains a fun game, but it does still not approach the feel of soccer as well as PES does.

PES is starting to suffer from the FIFA syndrome, I heard: my friends claim that nothing changed. Now, I must admit that PES is a perfect footie game, but we do want to see some updates on the field of AI and graphics. The AI has improved quite a lot, they say, but the graphics are starting to lag behind. No idea about FIFA, Matt says it's good. EDIT: As does Gamespot - that was quite a surprise. Things appeared to have changed from last year. That'll stir up KONAMI well, lol.

I don't like Metacritic, and I usually render whatever they say void. What I've seen of the site isn't much impressive, and I've always felt they were distant and unintressed with whatever they describe.

Metacritic doesn't generate content. They just pull all of the reviews from online and print mags and give an average score. Therefore it's the best place to go to gauge a game.

That explains it.

But no, that makes it even worse for me. Games are emotion and while a grade can support an individual opinion perfectly - grades can not be summed up like normal maths. (Nor can they be correctly interpreted without an accompanying article). I thought it was you who said grade interpretation without reading the article was a bad thing? Well, Metacritic is a bad thing.

If you'd read the reviews, you'd see that most sites says that while PES is a better soccer game, it gets punished for not having new contents or new things (the FIFA syndrome). FIFA renewed quite some stuff, but most reviews agree it's still not really soccer - although much better than before. A perfect summary:

Quote: "While FIFA 08 undoubtedly plays better than ever before, there are still a few quirks in the gameplay. The game effortlessly combines lifelike movement with ease of control, but players still lack the responsiveness of those in the rival Pro Evolution Soccer (Winning Eleven in some territories) series. While EA Sports' players have the edge when it comes to flashy moves, the majority of the game still relies on basic movement and passing, and FIFA feels light and somewhat vague, while PES titles have always felt more precise and accurate. To its credit, though, EA's willingness to experiment is beginning to put Konami's stale refinements to shame, and FIFA is definitely a viable alternative for serious sim fans who are looking for something different to the Pro Evolution Soccer series. "

That puts the grades in quite another perspective, doesn't it?

I too disagree with scores for games.

That being said, when I'm in a hurry and want to know if a game is worth renting, I'll hop on Metacritic over any other site because it's an average of ratings. If it gets a decent score (7 or above), odds are I won't be completely disappointed.

If, however, I want to buy the game and spend $60 on it, I will read full reviews from sites that I respect, and will often not care about the score. For example sometimes a reviewer will mark down a game because of its lack of online multiplayer, something that I couldn't care any less for--- the fact that I can read about it in the review will not sway my opinion of wanting to play it

Yup, it's good to read WHY a certain score was given. Without the text, a score doesn't say a thing.
