Well as it says Pointless Assault has returned from a long sleep.
The reason having moved far away and doing repairs to the new house.I have opened a fast food place that has kept me pretty busy and now that my staff have been fully trained I can continue with my pet project.

I have ordered X10 and will leave X9 development scene as there is no real benefit of continued development with X9.So I should have my copy early next week depends if the holidays slowed things down.

To those who don't know what I'm talking about Pointless Assault was started some time last year with a purely senseless shooting frensy in mind no objective if you could call getting from point A to point B in one piece an objective. Each level increase decreases you health and bullets and enemies gaining more health as you progress into the game....

Sounds fun right!!Well every thing was so wrong at the begining and improved as the project progressed.
Just to refresh your mind here files and linkshttp://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=90393&b=25

The last X9 demo
http://pushbutton.co.za/fileserv01/qaYurXKs/IdXd.zip

So there you have it new screens will be uploaded soon as for X10 who knows mabye I can get the custom content for X9 loaded into X10 hassle free.If not I will have to use stock content and model packs when they are X10 ready...

I wasn't expecting this.

I think it still looks like X9, but otherwise...10/10! Very nice work, WoI.

Well design tips?

Well that would depend on the game your making. We all know by now that FPSC is not suited for outdoor games it can be done but requires a lot more effort and planning to get it right and it can be done not on a huge scale we would like but never the less.

A horror game per example would require simple key elements to make it a horror game it's no different in designing the levels of a horror game.A dark level is a good start but make it too dark and it will be unplayable.A narrow corridor isn't scary if all you do is shoot one or two guys and your out the other end.

Proper planing is required per example using triggers within the corridor spawns enemies at the back of you that won't die and you forced to move foward getting to the end of the corridor there is a big explosion blocking your path to continue ahead. Now you are forced to move backward and face certain death this would be a good time to place a story zone and infrom your player that he needs to find the right key for the door in the corridor the wrong door could lead to his death.

This a good example of howto

Action games can use the same effect without much change. It all comes down to interaction within the level and good scripting pratices. The more the player has to do to stay alive the more the player gets into the game and wants to stay alive.

There is no clear cut level design only basics apply from one level to the next start with the basics but leaving room for the actual level. In other words because FPSC uses building blocks you can draw you level out roughly within the editor and remove blocks as you go along instead of starting with the level right away not all level concepts works even with proper planing this only applies to FPSC.Why? because level walls and floors can removed without any problems unlike other game development editors.

Light mapping in my books plays the second most imporant part of a level.Light mapping sets the atmosphere within a level and requires a lot of testing to get the correct light ranges and colours. This will require you to play around with the settings as much as possible or till it's presentable....

Any thing else I might have left out?

Here's a design tip: Don't mix weapons in from different model packs/categories. So you shouldn't be mixing in modern with ww2 and sci-fi. Besides that, your level design looks great! The first pic almost looked like X10!

Why? it could be post-modern game (old weapons and sci-fi superweapons) and colt.45 is still used...

WoI,

The game that I am making in FPSC is Failure to Cooperate, A.K.A FtC. It's in the thread entitled "Welcome Back, Myself!!--Failure to Cooperate WIP". Take a look; maybe we can discuss game design over a cup of tea and crumpets.

My game is set in 2017-2018, and it has a mix of sci-fi enemies and human meatbags (a la Riddick).

@Inspire thanks dude

Any ways like I'm said still waiting for my copy of X10 to arrive and decided to play around bit with some things that I would want to do in X10 and try out some of my model pack things...

Not all bad,but I would have liked the lighting from the grates to cast shadows at a smaller angle....

@Wizzard of ID: Looks good mate. Are those gratings entities or segments due to I didn't really know that you could get gratings to cast shadows

@creator

Very simple to get the effect. But requires 1 or 2 settings to be adjusted.

First what you need todo is go to your setup.ini in the main dir edit this line:

lightmapquality=

To 50 or lower.I have selected 50 because it's the best. However watchout for going to high as you might get the light map leaking effect. However be warned of bit slower building times but it's all worth it.

You need to set the ambience to about 5 to 10 the darker the better.Because you want the grates to cast a good shadow it would require a large light raduis. The problem with that however is that you should keep the area below the grate unaccessable as the area will be super bright and colour light works.

The second part of the problem is your very limited on the ammount of light source you can use above the grate if you do use other light source don't match below the grate colour.

If you do need to add matched light sources try and keep the raduis away from the area the will cast shadows against the wall.

Once you have set the ambience select full light mapping other you will not get the desired effect it might still show with normal light mapping but not recomended.

However should your grate be a enetity you may use normal light mapping. For segments you would have to use full light mapping.

Either one works...

One other thing move the light up or down to get the angle of the shadows.

Any else that wants to try this or is having problems let knew know fpscguide@webmail.co.za

Please note this was done with version 1.07 other version might support it but I can't help you with that.recomended version is between 1.05 and 1.07

@ASTEK

This is what boggles my mind when people need a story to a game to make it game....

Whatever happened to the pointless shooting of the early 80's.

Yet don't get me wrong when I'm say there is no story there is a story it's just not a story that can be followed. It's more of a introduction as to why you find your self in this pointless shooting fest....

The idea which I'm going to spoil would be cutscene at the start of each level explain how much life you have or rather how little you have...and some tips on how to make it to the other side.

So you can't call it completely senseless or >pointless<

Call it lazy...but it requires a lot of planning to keep it intersting....

Apparently Doom 1 made him feel like a cherry twice. Interesting. I've never had a game make me feel like a cherry.

@wizard of id, Those screens look fantastic. I can't wait to see what the DX10 version has in store.

Well still haven't recieved my copy of X10 at least I know where it is thanks to the internetz and a tracking number and should have it by monday.

however my new system to run X10 still haven't arrive either has not even being dispacthed yet *sob*For those who want to know what the new specs are:

Intel Q6600 Quad
XFX 8800GT 512MB extreme edition
4 gig Super low latency ram
DFI Inf P965-S dark (overclocker dream)

I'm pretty sure I will run X10 in all it's glory or should I say gory detail......

Enough with the speeches here are some ideas I want to try in X10 I'm hopping that the light mapping would cast more or less the same shadows ect...The bottom area I would love to see it filled with refecltive water to set the right mood.....

And as A sign of good will.Really shouldn't be doing this but what the hell.

If some one really needs to get there hands on X10 but don't have the system to run it or money

Contact me at fpscguide@webmail.co.za and we can see what we can do with hooking you up with a secondhand system......

heads up mods!!!!

Actually, everything in that room is static. It would have lagged way too much for it to be dynamic, and the collision detection was screwy, so I made them all static to be safe.

Yeah... dude... I miss some of those old shooters. That was it back then! And I just have to say, MY GOD your game is BEAUTIFUL. I love it when someone can make a shooter and then it stand out far above others. You're like a Wetham of your own kind. I don't care about story myself much either. If the game play is decent and the vibe of the game is good... then I want to play it. Nice job dude... I think more people should recognize this title!

EDIT: Just hit me... this reminds me of F.E.A.R, and I love that game.

I have to agree, now that I think about it. F.E.A.R. used a lot of those types of shadows to give the levels a realistic feel to it, and you've incorporated those perfectly. Great job once again.

Well with some luck I got most of the modelpacks to work some problems here and there but overall good result...would still get the X10 converted model packs...

Please read my review in the X10 forum I'm sorely dissapointed....

As you can see I converted the X9 level...Will be converting the first level tonight the same one I used for the nvidia compo...

coffee grunt,

Are you looking in C:\Program Files\The Game Creators\FPS Creator ?
You should see a setup.ini in that folder.

Oh and just a question for you, wizard of id. If you were to throw a dynamic barrel or cylinder that is rotated 90 degrees (so its horizontal), will it roll or slide?

Can't remember
at this stage I first need to get the barrels to show up first...lol

Well have a look now.

A tip on getting faster build times this only applies if you have X10, X9 has this enabled

lightmapthreadmax=0 change this to 1 or -1 this will enable the use of dual/quad core proccessing do not use this if you don't have a dual or quad CPU it will crash FPSC .....
