As a hobbyist programmer, I indulge myself in certain things which are definitely not good for me. This includes greasy pizza, greasy burgers, lack of exercise, junk food, barely any sleep, etc. But there is one really, REALLY, bad thing that has had me hooked for my entire life, and that is coke.

There is no denying it, coke is bad for you. The numerous testimonies about it eating away at your teeth, the caffeine, the sugar. Its just...bad. But, my god, does it taste good, and hell if its gotten me through some toughies during some late night coding binges.

Anyway, during the beginning of this semester at school, I switched from taking computer class (an easy A of course) to Phys Ed. To put it kindly, it was a humbling experience. To put it bluntly, it was an embarrassing one. Not only did I realize how out of shape I was for someone who is at the age where they should be at the peak of their physical performance, but I finally took a look at myself.

So I decided to start exercising more, to start eating better, and less, but more tragically, to STOP downing so many damned cokes!
Around last Saturday, I had my last coke for the week, and then went about the change. The first day wasn't to bad, I missed having a coke for lunch, and dinner, and at night....but I made it through. Then came Sunday. I woke up feeling abit down and by mid afternoon I had a horrible headache and nasty mood. This continued onto Tuesday.

Its now been a week, and I have had only 1 coke, exactly a week after I stopped, at dinner. Granted, im not out of the woods yet, but I honestly do feel better, and I hope to make myself commit this well in the other parts of getting my self into shape.

So has anyone else ever had to cut way back on the coke, or some other sugary soft drink? OR just generally taken a good look at yourself and decided to be a little healthier?

I never exercise, there's nowhere to go, but eat little and drink nothing but water. Gets me in the middle of the "Ok" band.

I managed to get off of mountain dew by drinking powerade. It's not healthy, but it's far less as bad as it does not contain nearly as much sugar and no caffeine.

Once you get off the sugar/caffeine addiction, you can then ween yourself off the powerade, which is just giving up the sugar, which is not physically addictive

But it sounds like you're already on top of things.

Yes. By the time I finished uni I was having a couple of cans of pepsi a day, plus lots of beer, plus smoking, plus spending all my time on the compo, plus the only exercise I was getting was a 20 min walk to and from uni each day. Now I play 2-3 hours of football a week, plus do 3 hours of martial arts, rarely use the compo after work, rarely drink to excess and have a coke/pepsi once every 3 or 4 days at the most. My diet was always pretty good, but now I also drink more water and have a couple more portions of fruit and veg a day too.

Overall, I feel loads better. My stomach/digestive system is loads better - no more sore guts from the coke ruining my insides, much better concentration levels and physical sense of well being too. I've seen no improvement from stopping smoking (which was a good 6 months ago) - no noticable improvement to my respitory system or sinuses or anything, but at least I'm saving some money and can be a little less scared of lung cancer.

But anyway, I'm 26. All kids go through the junk food phase etc. So long as eventually you come out the other side before you go too far, then it's not too bad. I congratulate you for taking this step now, rather than waiting too long, and I hope you stick with it. Ultimately you grow to dislike coke and junk food when your body gets accustomed to eating and drinking decent food, and then you look back at your rancid greasy MacDonalds and ask yourself why you ever treated yourself so badly.

I couldn't give up soda, way too tasty. But it is like everything else, just use it in moderation.

As for coke... mmmm mmm mmmmm

I did this back when I was about 15 (the time I took my first REAL bio class, I was stunned how bad soda was for you), the whole exersise and healthy food thing. It works amazingly, the only other part to remember is not to eat too much at any meal, or you'll gain wieght regaurdless. Exersising became harder to convince myself to do at college, but the long long walks between classes seem to have made up for it; that and sports like nerf and ultimate frisbee.

You'll find after going long enough without coke or any other soda you really don't like it that much anymore... I actually stopped liking coke, and pepsi now makes me feel sick.

I would rather an addict of coke then coke, if you get what I mean . The drink is much better then the drug. However, I never drink it unless I have an really bad stomach. Coke is quite good for that thing, which is the only real good thing with it.

I have not eaten candy or drunk coke, pepsi or whatever in an eternety. Ok, I eat natural candy, but that is all (like chips made of rice and penuts inbedded in yogurt). Stoping eating candy was very, very hard. I could feel how I just wanted to take it, but I didn´t. So to stop drinking coke might be hard (not for me though) but it is fully possible.

Darkness, you haunt me. If I give in, I would be an monster beyond imagining. Light, you guide me. Thanks to you, I see past the nothingness. Life, I choose to live in the light.

Ever since I've not been to Karate my fitness has plummeted and well with my high carbohydrate diet it has made me even more out of shape...well new years resolution, go on a diet, cut out the sweet stuff...I'll just not mention I have a 2 litre bottle of Dr Pepper by my side and a bag of pop corn and that I had Hot dog and noodles for dinner.

When I ran from one person's set of flats to my own, I was out of breathe...a bad sign, especially as a year ago I could do it with no trouble.

But yes, seriously though - if you are a programmer or an 'idle' person you need some form of exercise and a decent diet otherwise you will have health problems. Let's put it this way 250ml of Dr Pepper (I don't drink Coca Cola, it's Pepsi, DP or water) is 105 calories, even the stimulant 'Red Bull' substitute I buy is 47 calories per 250ml and the Polish one I found is a measly 2 (The sugar free stuff and it's surprisingly nice).

A good thing to do is, cut down on the acids and sugars (Fizzy drinks are full of them) and walk everywhere...I do that, apart from I need to completely adjust my diet.

It takes blood and guts to be this cool, but I'm still just a cliche

In a 12 oz. can of coke there's 140 calories, so, around 355 grams or so of coke produces 140 calories. In 185 grams of rice, there's 685 calories. Seriously, I don't know why everyone thinks Coke is going to kill you, lol. You can run off a can of coke in 30 seconds . Excercise, eat a well-rounded diet, and you're fine. I'm in pretty good shape and I drink A LOT of coke every day, and I eat more pizza than most, and to top that off I'm a smoker. But then, I play soccer all summer with my friends and I try to get on the excercise bike as often as possible. Dunno, I think people flip out about Coke and overhype it as a terrible drink when it's not even remotely as hazardous as people make it out to be.

Yeah, I get what Matt's saying here. Maybe it's not the coke fella's

Everyone has their own standards of diet and exercise for keeping in shape. It's extremely easy for me to drink coke every day, eat a bunch of junk food, and exercise once or twice a week- still keeping in good shape. That's only because of my age, though.

Btw, I eat an average of 5 plates of rice a week.

No offense, but coke eating away at your teeth is rubbish. Unless you don't brush your teeth everyday, then you will have nothing to worry about.

They have conducted a study in America (I believe it is America) and it is found to be better for you to be Overweight (ish) and Fit (Healthy) than it is to be skinny and Fit.

The human body is designed to store fat, just like every other mammal. If storing fat kills us, evolution would have sorted that out by now.

But I suppose, storing fat by eating lots of chocolate is probably bad for us.

I don't think Coke is that bad for you. It's just that it's full of e numbers that affect chemical balances and acids which aren't good for your guts. It's not gonna kill you, it's just not that great for you. If you combine that with no exercise, and crap food, the overall effect is a lower standard of health now and poorer health in your old age. I dont think any one of these things are gonna cause you many problems by themselves, but it's still worth cutting down on any of these things if you're not consuming them in moderation.

Indeed Mr Fallout, like with 'any treat' you need to have it in moderation and exercise...yeah it won't kill you, but you're still not going to be in a healthy state. As with eating a burger, it's not going to kill you, but eat too many and exercise too little and you're going to be pushed down the hill one day, tubby with greasy fingers and a racing heart. Then the only thing that'll kill you is the Lorry speeding on the motorway.

It takes blood and guts to be this cool, but I'm still just a cliche

I drink Coca Cola as if its water, and honestly, if you just make sure you do some excersises it's all right. Luckily that my main transportation is the bike and quite some kilometers per day, that pretty much cuts down on the calories.

I drank so much coke at one point, and then on my 17th birthday I went to the dentist and for the first time in my life I had to have a filling, and I was very disappointed. Since then (Dec 4th) I havent had a spot (not just coke, any fizzy drinks). Now when I have anything fizzy I don't like it.

It is not good for you if you drink it all the time "like water".

Carbonated drinks rot your teeth. You can use it for cleaning coins too. Drop a realy old coin in some fizzy pop and come back to it in the morning and it's nice and shiney like it just game from the mint

You can get addicted to both Aspartame and Caffeine and they are supposed to both be able to kill you in high enough doses.

A lot of stuff in high enough quantities will kill ya. Eat enough custard pies and the nutmeg will finish you off I remmber somone on the net writing how he tried to take a trip on a nutmeg and it nearly killed him.

Wierdly I've got a friend who just became addicted to pepper but I've not found any evidence to say it's bad for them.

It will be impossible to overdose on caffeine through coke. You'd be physically incapable to drink that much. You can however overdose on redbull.

You would have to drink about 4 Liters of Redbull to overdose (If your a 70KG person). You would have to drink twice that amount of Pepsi to overdose.

First of all, don't believe or listen to anything else anyone on this thread has posted so far, except this post, it's actually important for once.

January 1st, 2008
I drank a Carmel Frap from Starbucks, and some soda that day, I mean, it was New Years.

January 2nd, 2008 - 5:30am
I'm running up and down a basketball court, I woke up at 4:45am because I had to get there on time, for my school's basketball team. I felt a bit nauseous, because of all the lactic acid I had from yesterdays drinks.. I decided to put myself in shock from soda.

January 16th, 2008
I drink one soda for dinner, and it tastes like crap. The drink I once drank every day at least once or twice, now sucks. Yes, it was hard getting to the fifteen days, but I was committed to it. Now I don't drink so much, even though it's four days later, I'm limiting myself to one can a month at the most. Just because soda tastes soo sucky.

Think before you shove that nasty stuff down your throat.

And all these people that say coke isn't bad for you, that's a bunch of bukak.

That doesn't mean it's harmful. Vinegar does the same thing.

Myself, I still drink a ton of coffee, but I've never been addicted to pop or anything sugary like that. I am gaining some weight, so I've been walking home from the mall every day instead of riding the skytrain. It's not much, but an average of 4.5kms every night is better than nothing. I just pick up a nice brisk pace and listen to audiobooks on my iPod. It's nice to get the fresh air

The problem you might get is that caffine enters your system faster than it leaves so over time it can build up to a dangerous level if you drink nothing else but caffine drinks.

Try drinking Vinigar instead of water I bet it won't do you well

I think that will come to a steady decrease over the next hundred years and the process starting to reverse.

It will probably start by health services refusing treatment to anybody who is obese and smokes/takes drugs. Which I can see happening, Governments are always trying to find ways to save or make money.

I think USA's fat population is far higher than 66%.(then again, I live in ohio, fat capital of the world)

I'm fairly sure I'm addicted to mountain dew. I drink one almost every morning for breakfast, usually 2 more throughout the day. If I have a coke, it does nothing for me unless I have 3 of them. I've tried to quit with little success. However, I may have found a solution. Yesterday was my birthday, and so naturally I drank a lot of liquor, mostly top-shelf brands. Well when I woke up today, my mountain dew tasted like vodka to me, so I quickly disgarded the can. So it's simple, if you wanna stop drinking pop/soda, then fill up on vodka and tequila (with a bit of whiskey for flavoring) and you'll touch a liquid again. Problem solved!

p.s. i'm so thirsty right now......

I've never been addicted to anything. ever.

I know if i get addicted, I won't be able to stop, and I'll destroy myself. I have maybe three or four sodas a week, and just mainly with movies. Never tried a cigarette, it's beyond me why someone would one one of those ghastly things, I find it miserable to be near one, can't imagine putting one in my mouth and breathing in the smoke.

I won't pretend to be in the best shape, but I'm not awful. I eat pizza more than i probably should, but i have a glass of milk with protein powder in it for a drink every meal. I also lift weights while waiting for things on my computer to load.

I saw this topic and it made me thirsty. I love coke, I am addicted to it. I play cricket on weekends, practise pase bowling 1 hour everyday, walk a lot and workout. Its just to hard to get off coke, i probably drink 2-3 cans a day sometimes less, but i do drink a lot of water too because theres always big ice cold jugs of it in the fridge.
Overall, i think i've got it in balance with the way i go about my diet and exercise, but if i do slack off then i guess it would become a problem.

I've pretty much cut down on all things unhealthy (pizza, cola, chips/crisps etc). Not only because they're bad for me but also because I save a whole lot of money. Some of which I now spend on a weekly spinning session.

Spinning is a great way to burn fat and to increase condition. Sure it's like hell the first 1 or 2 times even on the easiest session but you get used to it pretty fast. Nobody can keep up with everything the first time so no need to feel bad about that. Oh, and go easy on the resistance setting, nobody knows how much you got on anyway.

I have always walked a lot and that's also pretty good, especially if you walk quickly, which I'm not as good at. Walking saves a ton of money since I don't even need to own a car (and pay for insurance and taxes). My current flat have a nice distance to both my office in one direction and the city center at the opposite direction.

I drink up to 3 cans of coke a day, have no fillings and my teeth are reasonably white. I am a firm believer that coke strips yoir teeth of anything else nasty that might want to cause decay

Having said that, I would like to cut down, or cut it out altogether. But it's one of very few vices that I have, so I have nothing else to turn to

Yep. Used to be oh so easy to grab a coke from the vending machine right near where I used to work. Personally I try and just drink water or milk these days. Luckily I absolutely love the taste of milk. Even skimmed.

Only time I really looked at myself and thought I should give up anything was alcohol and ciggies. When you get chest pains from walking up stairs at 29 years old (and not fat or really unfit) then you know is bad. I know a lot of people who had that. So gave up ciggies on 30th birthday (always said I would), and gave up alcohol fully for 2 years until I no longer needed to get smashed all the time. Totally feel so much better for that.

Cheers

Although now I think of it, a friend of mine literally cut his coke habit. I don't mean the vending kind. Well unless things are a little different in the US Basically he went to about 7 funerals in a year from his hometown (total dump in south Wales), all to do with drugs. Not good. At least a Cola habit should take a lot longer to kill you, or cock you up fitness wise at least

Hmmm. Weird that. Today was the first day in about 6 months that I actually bought a can of coke...

The enzymes we got in our saliva is probably more corrosive then the citric acid in Coke. Citric acid is very common in stuff you buy and completely safe to consume, even as is. It may or may not be a bad idea to soak your teeth in it for hours and hours though. Coke makes your teeth brown though.

I always brush my teeth before I go to bed, but not so often do I brush them in the morning.

I always brush my teeth morning and before I get to bed, and still have problems with them even if I eat no real candy and do not drink stuff like coke. But those problems are very small, so...

Darkness, you haunt me. If I give in, I would be an monster beyond imagining. Light, you guide me. Thanks to you, I see past the nothingness. Life, I choose to live in the light.

What kind of problems? If you don't mind...

I have mild fluorisis. My teeth look permanently discolored because of fluoride ingestion at very early age. I hate my mom for that and will never forgive her.

There's a reason there's warning labels on the toothpaste tubes saying "don't swallow", and if you do you must get to a hospital or something. Not implying i ever did that, but fluoride is added in the water you buy in stores, and most places in USA you get fluorided water straight from the kitchen sink. It's really not good for you.

There's a simple solution. Drink only mineral water without added floride, and chew teeth cleaning gum.

Rapid texture streaming, Pixel shaders gleamin',
Cooling fans a screaming, And power bills a reaming.
