White listing is traditionally used to block spam and it's a pain in the ass to be honest, I hate having to configure all those valid senders. Quite how you expect it to work in an image capacity is beyond me. Unless you want to authorise every single image the DB site serves up? (and pray-tell what software would you use to do this.. no browser has this kinda thing built in yet and no ad-blocking software I've seen allows you to specificy blocks on a per image per site basis, only on a URL basis).

it would be quite easy to identify the HTML around the images and 'cut' it out using some PHP code.

Although, i am OK with them i do not not like em as much to make a program like that.

The Outside is a evil place to be, too much light, too much noise and too many distractions....
I went outside once and my FPS rate dropped to 5.

This is the UK site. Although people from any country are welcome to use it I agree though that ads should be primarily English - better still, have it detect your country and show ads based on that, its quite easily possible

Bunnies aren't just cute like everybody supposes, They got them hoppy legs & twitchy little noses,
And what's with all the carrots? What do they need such good eyesight for anyway?

Wondering where i've been for the last week?

Even my little software house has found a way to stay advert free since our launch - and we still are. Banshee has never forced anyone to read those damn webverts as a result of our web presence so If I can do it then i'm sure DB could manage.

Why not you may ask, why not make the most of the traffic counter? Because for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction and many people just cannot stand internet adverts. I am one of them.

I am limiting the time I spend on this forum as I do not wish to spend my web browsing time viewing adverts. I preffer to deal with more professional companies and forums. Therefor, i'll not be giving technical help to anyone at this forum until the adverts are gone.

When I want something, I (and anyone above the cerebral activity of a moron) am intelligent enough to find out where and how to get that something without the help of DarkBASIC Software.

I'm not here to line your pockets with gold Rich, i'm here as a past time and I take offense that you think me foolish enough to actually buy from the people you have advertising.

I swear if you start sending me junk emails too i'll down every last computer DB ever had. In the meentime, enjoy the respite from me, i'll be here a lot less.

If you are it'll be very indirect - possibly only through time spent downloading the graphics. However, most of that would go to BT anyway.

My main objection is (aside from the time taken to download) it just looks tacky.

While my feelings aren't quite as strong as Dryll's, I also think that the adverts should go. You SELL a product here. It looks desperate to resort to cheesey little adverts of other products.

If you want to make some extra cash, why not start publishing some games made with your "game-making" product. So... if someone like Dryll, or myself, or anyone else here makes something top-notch, you make it available for purchase through your site (keeping a percentage for DBS). That would have benefits to everyone, especially DBS. It would push people to work hard on something worthwhile. It would push the development of DarkBasic's features and stability while promoting what it is capable of. It would make DBS some extra cash. It would make some users here some extra cash. It would be good all the way around.

I wonder how many hits the ads have got so far. It is my belief that many of us are not actually massively keen games players - as in we prefer to spend our time writing rather than playing them. Hence I think that an ad for say CharacterFX or MilkShape would get more hits than one for GAME (what idiot buys from them anyway - they always charge WAY OOT for everything). Just my 2 cents, and not everyone is going to agree.

GAME (what idiot buys from them anyway - they always charge WAY OOT for everything).
They're not too bad, especially for the more obscure titles (like Dance 5). I generally either get my software from either MVC or WHSmith's.

I used to use Jungle a lot, but since they intergrated with Argos you cant get much in the way of software anymore.

Well, this is amusing. You seem to think DB should follow the example of a small game developer who tries to THREATEN them into taking the ads down by saying he 'won't give technical help'? Good grief!

No, it won't be. It'll use the same redirection system as every other link (showcase games, web sites, etc) when we re-launch.

And you spend how long exactly on the ONE page the advert is on? (the forum index page). What.. 10 seconds? Maybe less? You are over-reacting on a grand scale. Tell me - what other web sites do you visit daily that DON'T have adverts of some kind for related products on? The BBC? Oh wait, they advertise their own programs on their site. GameSpy? (err, let's not go there, you can't even download files easily without a charge), Barrysworld? (same again), any CNET site? any search engine? Gamedev.net? Flipcode? etc etc bloody etc. Perhaps you should limit the time you spend on those too? After all they're just lining their pockets with your gold, right? Geezus H, some people.

And those will also rotate into the selection on the new site. Primarily we'll use it to advertise our own products (as I've stated once already in this thread). I think it's a misconception to assume that most people here don't play games. Quite a big one at that.

I'm locking this thread, there is nothing more to discuss about it. If you don't like the ads, don't visit the forum index page, bookmark a forum directly. Not exactly rocket science is it.
