Lol, well I don't think racing is very common around here . I don't ever plan to race either, so I think I'll stick with auto .

Well, it's the same here, but in the most case, round-abouts are big enough that someone coming from the other side, turning to (their) right wouldn't reach your side in nearly enough time if you got on just a second after they did.

There is another road-rule here in Aus that is very un-known where you are meant to indicate out of a round-about as you are about to leave it.
So, if you're going straight over the round-about, as you are about to get back onto the road, you indicate to the left.
This lets people on the other side of the round-about know that you're leaving it, and can proceed without worrying about you both trying to occupy the same space at the same time

Quote: "manual or automatic, and why?"

Manual all the way, baby!

So much more control over the engine (can rev it nicely to get up hills, over-take slow trucks, etc), and if the brakes ever fail you can use the clutch to slow you down

Quote: "Until I learned to drive stick I did have that lingering feeling in the back of my head."

Haha, a good mate of mine just learnt how to drive manual a year back, and the second he did, he started bad-mouthing people who drove auto

Quote: "There are many hills in my city, and I don't like red lights on a hill in a standard."

Quote: "my father showed me how to avoid this. Engage the emergency break for a manual. Then, slowly release the clutch as you press down on the gas pedal, then when the engine has revved up enough, release the emergency break."

You actually have to do this as one of the practical components here to get your license in a Manual in the first place (even in an Automatic, but the car takes care of the reving and what-not on it's own).

Quote: "I don't think twice when driving manual."

Too true

Rick,

That's one crazy round-about!
I can see that they initially made the mistake of having it as two-way, then they couldn't figure out how to get the inside lane out of the round-about and instead of admitting major flaws in their design, they put in more little baby roundabouts so they could get out!

How very stupid

Here the rules are to always move clockwise, people ON the roundabout are first (independent of being a car, bike or pedestrian), indicate that you're going off the roundabout.

Exactly the same here, you just said it much more eloquently than I ever could

But... pedestrians? I can just imagine them running around the round-about like a dog chasing a car! Haha.

Here, there's no crossings or paths or anything for pedestrians to move around a round-about (crossings are usually at least 5 or so meters along the exit for small round abouts and not at all for big ones).

Wow, that's the worst set of roundabouts I could have ever imagined. They don't even serve their intended purpose, traffic was constantly stopping.

In Germany they make a big point about signaling when you exit the roundabout. I always do, but lots of Germans don't.

Come see the WIP!

I've driven through the Magic Roundabout. If you know the rules, and stick to them, it works. But for anyone who doesn't know the rules, has their own rules, or simply makes them up as they go along, it would be a rather tricky challenge!

Just a note...

The US does have roundabouts. In fact, I drive through a few everyday on my way to class.
