Audiosurf was just released on Steam today for the tidy sum of $9.99. I have spent a good 2 or 3 hours on it already so it's already been more than worth the money! It's up for a bunch of IGF awards, too! Support your fellow indie developers!

Basically you point it to an MP3, OGG, M4A, etc. file and it analyzes it for speed, vocals, etc. and builds a track for your car. The speed decreases when the song tempo slows, then gets really crazy and fast when it increases! There are different vehicles for different styles of play. Then you submit your high score on the global list. Oh wow--- and it's so beautiful Right now I'm #1 on the global high scores for several Prodigy songs!

You should all play the demo-- it's free after all. Then when you get sucked in and buy the game (which you will), we should have some friendly competitions on here!

The best part about this game is it remembers the analyzation of your song so you can keep playing the same track and building up your score.

Here's the site if you'd like to check out some screenies. Anyone else played this game? I'm in love

EDIT:

Here's some tips:

- Play with the cursor keys rather than the mouse. It's not precise enough with the mouse.

- Finish each track with an empty board of blocks, and you'll get a 25% bonus.

EDIT 2:

Oh yah, I forgot to mention that the game includes a copy of the Orange Box soundtrack in MP3 format! You can't go wrong with this deal

heh, I was considering making a post on this game.

It's great, I have been playing the beta/demo for the past week after pre-ordering it as soon as it was announced it would be on steam.

Ninja Mono is by far the best character/ship . Have to disagree with your comment about the mouse though, maybe it's just because I have a ridiculously precise mouse, but I prefer it to the keyboard.

I'm Silent Coyote on the score boards, I did have global high scores on a few songs last night, though this morning I had a load of emails telling me my high scores had been beaten . I imagine it will be a while until the scoreboards settle down on popular songs.

One problem I have noticed though is it logs different versions of the same song on the same scoreboard. I have a ridiculously high score on Money by Pink Floyd simply because I played a live version whereas everyone else has played the studio version. Also it would be much better if there were separate scoreboards for the different character types as they play very differently. Hopefully the developer will continue to support and update it. Still it's a fun way to interact with your music.

How dare this game still Vib Ribbon's amazingness

EDIT:

I am downloading it though

Presumably the game is harder with faster BPM etc. right? Because I'm dying to see the effect of putting some acid techno in it...

Alright, I've added Silent Coyote.

Ninja Mono is a bit too hard for me still. My favourite is the Pro Mono ship (I forget the name), where you can left-click and your arms extend across the whole track to pick everything up. It's pretty good for getting the high scores

Quote: "One problem I have noticed though is it logs different versions of the same song on the same scoreboard. I have a ridiculously high score on Money by Pink Floyd simply because I played a live version whereas everyone else has played the studio version."

They'll probably report your score and you'll be taken off. It goes by the ID3 tags on your song.

The genius thing is you can look at all the high scores, and if one of them seems to be wayyy higher than anyone else's, you can actually look at the shape of his track. One guys got a high-score on Still Alive (from Portal), and his track is ALL DOWNHILL. No wonder. You can click to report it, so I did. Also, the song was 5 minutes instead of the normal 2:45

Quote: "Also it would be much better if there were separate scoreboards for the different character types as they play very differently."

I think it's fair the way they are now--- different for each skill level.

Quote: "Presumably the game is harder with faster BPM etc. right? Because I'm dying to see the effect of putting some acid techno in it..."

Hell yah! If you have a song that's constanly fast you can expect a really difficult downhill ride

I tried it... and I liked it. I liked it very much. I bought it immediately after my amount of free goes had expired.

Absolutely awesome, even just for the random amusement of watching my music in the freeride thing.

Damn cool

Good--- what's your user name?

Has anyone else noticed the high score lists have been randomly unavailable? They're getting hammered since yesterday. They should have gone the whole way with the Steamworks (i.e. friends lists, etc.)

Yeah I figured it would probably get removed eventually. Still, kind of annoying considering the track is tagged correctly (ripped direct from the CD). Perhaps an option not to upload your score after you complete a song would have helped, as now every time I play that song its going to get added back and I'll get reported again . I could always change the tags, but I'm rather fuzzy over how my music is tagged and I'm not gonna change it, not even for a game as good as this .

That's really about my only major complaint though. Its a pretty amazing game considering it was basically made by one guy.

Quote: "Alright, I've added Silent Coyote."

I'm assuming your Jeku on the scoreboards as well? That's kinda another minor complaint I guess, the game doesn't tell you when someone else adds you to their friends list.

I was in the beta for the game. Blood Sugar by Pendulum can get pretty crazy at times.

Good to see it made it onto steam. Will probably pick it up when I get home.

I bought it because I'm a sucker for rhythm games (since the good ol' DDR/Beatmania days), and while it's fun, after playing it once and leaving the game stops working all together. Apparently I'm not the only one either because the forums are all lit up right now. I think the problem is with my sound card though, stupid integrated piece of crap.

I lied--- when I posted that I was technically in the process of adding you. I couldn't sign into my account, and I still can't Dylan, the developer, is upgrading the server as we speak, and he's going to post an update in the Steam forums when it's done. Then all will be good in the land of Audiosurf, and I'll add you for real hehe.

Haha I've been reading that thread too, guess your the Jeku who asked when the server would be back up?

Kinda wish I had a game I made that was so popular the servers couldn't handle it...

Connection started playing up at the point that I wanted to sign up, so presumably I need to wait for the server for fix itself (unless it's just my steam ID, but presumably I need to sign up separately for AS - I dunno though, never got that far, stupid server!)

On a side note, I randomly emailed that bloke at Steam regarding Steam works, since after seeing this, I'm intrigued

Yeah, I saw information about it on Steam and it sounded interesting, but like Tom J I hadn't pursued the interest at all, but after this thread, downloading the demo.

Disappointing that I know I won't be able to buy it though, short on cash lately

Sweet, just got the PPM 30,000 achievement for getting 30,000 points a minute for at least 3 minutes. Good ol' Rednex Cotton Eye Joe And I got #1 on the global Pro leaderboards--- almost doubled the second place score!

Mono Pro all the way!

EDIT:

Booyah! Just got #1 on the global score list for Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb! A narrow margin, but hey, it still counts

Looks like an interesting game. I don't have a steam account, so I can't download it, but I like the idea.
I've had a similar idea for typing. As you type, you analyze the harmonics you use (including errors, etc), which is converted into a generator for music. Since most people type at least at a steady pace, I reckon you could get some pretty funky beats out of it

Quote: "The genius thing is you can look at all the high scores, and if one of them seems to be wayyy higher than anyone else's, you can actually look at the shape of his track."

I can imagine there could be issues with the quality of the song effecting the turn-out of the track.
So, you could have a dodge low bit rate MP3, which makes the track slightly easier (or harder), but it's still the same song.

Well it's obviously not a perfect system, but so far I've only had to report one song that was obviously a fake. The times I've made the high score list, the other more or less seemed to be around my own score (aside from Cotton Eye Joe, where I blew away the competition )

One of two things happened when I played, the demo, either my songs weren't used at all, or the program was being blocked from internet connection. I couldn't see any high scores for any of the 4 songs I did

Try a popular song that you know will be recorded, like one of the Orange Box songs (Still Alive is a good one). If the high score list is still empty then the server is getting hammered again. I've found that if you're logged in and the high score list is down, once it goes up all your high scores are recorded. Not sure how that's done--- probably it's stored in a temp file somewhere.

I'm all out of demo and still have no money, but the next spare $10 I have is definitely going the direction of this game

A fun song, imo to do, is one of my favorite songs ever, Nightwish - Nemo. I LOVE the track for that song, it's awesome

so far i found scooter and pendulum go best for this game.

it seems conclusive everyone loves ninja, probably because its the easiest mode.

the only bad point i have with the game is while it can decode mp3's well to place blocks on the beat, theres no way of predicting which lane you'll need to be in, whereas in guitar hero, you can predict which note to press by the pitch of the notes.

also the way it doesnt stay consistant. ie if theres a drum playing, it'll place a block for a couple of the drum beats and ignore the rest, and then play random blocks for beats of other instruments.

thanks el goorf.

what a great game, van halen and rush go wonderfully on this, as do eagles, and kansas and all other older bands I rock to daily. You know, I had a thought, if big n or psn, or xbox put this up, it could be amazing, but especially for handhelds with wifi, that would be great on the go but i'm just saying.
