Just try out some of the effects on a character. I know 2 of them make the character look like a ghost.

Look at the characters properties in the editor. Play with the transparency value.

Best.

You might want to read this months tip from lee. You can find by clicking on the following:

Lee's Tip of the Month - FPSC Lighting Tricks

Also, if you are using full shaders then you can do the following for the start script:

Play around with the values. I have used 50 and 75. Also, the quality of the ghost effect is determined by the character used. Some of the fantasy characters work great but if you put even the thug in the right environment, he doesn't look bad either. The less ambience the better.

I'm not sure the transparency property does anything but cause frustrations.

You better do some more reading hadn't you? There are some stickies in the Script forum as well as the FPSC chat forum. Also, there is a tutorial that actually comes with FPSC and a "Getting Started Guide."

The code snippet is a complete script that you can paste into notepad and save it as whatever name you want with an fpi extension. Put it into the scriptbank and select it as the AI start script in the character's properties.

Yeah I read the green ghost part, but when I do it and that my characters stay the same.

What am I doing wrong? I changed the effect to fastbone after I changed it.

Here is an easy way to make a ghost texture...

(0) Make a backup copy of the texture you want to edit.

(1) Get Paint.NET (its FREE)

(2) Open your character's texture with Paint.NET

(3) Goto the Layer's properties by clicking LAYERS > LAYER PROPERTIES

(4) Adjust the OPACITY to make it semi-transparent.

(5) Save the new 'ghost' texture as a DDS or TGA file.

I was doing this with solid green (and other colors) for ghosts like the one's in Lee's tip in the newsletter for awhile now.

You can get some cool hologram effects doing this.

I have tried playing with the shaders, but I find it hard to get an effect that is close to what I am looking for.
I guess I just need to play around with shaders more.

Hope this helps

The textures are in the same folder as the character's X file, and their BMP and FPE files.

C:\Program Files\The Game Creators\FPS Creator\Files\entitybank\ww2\characters

Look in the character's FPE file to know exactly which texture is being used for that character.

Read the manual to get a basic understanding of the files and their purpose & locations.

As I said before...

Quote: "Look in the character's FPE file to know exactly which texture is being used for that character."

For instance, the Thug (Unarmed)

Look in his FPE file and you might see something like the following...

;visualinfo
textured = ce_thug_2_D2.dds
effect = effectbank\bumpbone\bumpbone.fx
castshadow = 0

So, in the above example, his texture is ... ce_thug_2_D2.dds

You can use any texture you want, and the FPE file is where it is specified.

There is a lot of good help here; but, you really need to get up to speed on some of the basics.

Here are a couple of images of how I have created a ghost like affect. The first one is at 62% and the second one is at 50%. This is a fantasy character by Bond1 which is found in Model Pack 18. See my previous posts.

The barrels are by puppy of kosh and I don't think they are necessarily too tall.

This affect only works with full shaders.

I will help you one more time. Give me an hour or two and I will come up with actual screenies of what to do. It is very simple to get the ghostlike affect I had done. But if you are brand new to programming then it would seem very confusing. Although you have found out that using FPSC even a "noob" can do without much trouble. This will be a step by step procedure with pictures.

I'm retired. I can do this. Or is that retarded?

First things first. Since this is requires full shaders we need to make sure that full shaders is on. So beginning with Step #1.

Step 01:

Select File from the FPS Creator menu tool bar. Then select "Preferences" from the drop down menu and click the left mouse button.

=============================

Step 02:

This brings up the dialog window for FPSC preferences. Point the mouse cursor at "Full Shader Effects" and click the left mouse button. Then click on the OK button.

=============================

Step 03:

Now in this thread you will go to my indicated post and click the "Code Snippet" button. It is a very short script and it is in its complete.

Before going to step 04 be sure and open up a blank NotePad document.

=============================

Step 04:

Now highlight the code snippet and then copy to the clip board by pressing the Ctrl-C key combination.

=============================

Step 05:

Go to NotePad and paste the code into the document.

=============================

Step 06:

Select File and Save As on the Notepad tool bar.

=============================

Step 07:

In the Save As dialog box make sure you change the "Save as type" to "All Files".

=============================

Step 08:

Now go to the scriptbank user folder. If you setup using the default path it would be c:\Program Files\The Game Creators\FPS Creator\Files\scriptbank\User.

Now type in "ghost.fpi" as the file name. Notice the "FPI" extension -- very important. Finally click the "Save" button.

=============================

You are now ready for the next procedure for making your ghostly image. Stay tuned.

The conclusion.

Step 09:

Place the character you are going to use on the map and point to the mouse cursor to it and click on the right mouse button.

============================================

Step 10:

This brings up characters property list. Notice the start script which defaults to "appear.fpi". Point to it and click the left mouse button.

============================================

Step 11:

You will see a square box with three dots. Click on it.

============================================

Step 12:

This brings up the "Select file" dialog box. The default is in the "scriptbank" folder. However you want the "user" folder, so point to it and double click to access this folder.

============================================

Step 13:

Now, locate the file you saved as "ghost.fpi" and point the mouse cursor at it and double click the left mouse button to select it.

============================================

Step 14:

This will close the dialog box. Now point to the "Apply Changes" button and click the left mouse buttone

============================================

Step 15:

Test the game.

============================================

A couple of things to note.

1) Some characters do not do real well at transparency. However, changing the alphafade factor to a lower value might help plus putting the character in a room and lowering the ambience (that's a whole 'nuther story) can help. The fantasy characters do well as can be seen in a previous post.

2) The kicker is that if this does not work, then your graphics card does not support shaders and there is nothing you can do about it except to upgrade the card. If you give a game to a friend that does not have shaders, he might not even be able to run the game.

I have a sneaky suspicion that your card may not support shaders or you did not turn them on in the preferences. Even if this does not help, I am sure that others who are interested in making ghostly characters will benefit from this.

I cannot thankyou enough for this, although I don't think my card supports the shaders because everytime I try and test the game it freezes when it starts to load the lightmaps.

I hope others can learn from this.

ALso this is a new graphics card and can support good graphics games so I wont be updating for a while .

My way doesn't need shaders.

So, if you want to get back to "basics", then edit the texture itself.

Which character are you trying to ghost?

Here is a thug that I set his textures opacity to 80 using Paint.NET as I described above in an earlier post.

PS
I turned the shaders off for that picture.
This method works with shaders on or off for any characters including custom ones.

CE, good job, very nice. Not all of us are graphics people. You may think it is easy but it is not for me. I'm a retired programmer and have never dealt with graphics and have no real desire to learn at the moment, so I do whatever I can do. I realized that doing the texturing is the best way to go; but there was just another option I suggested.

BTW, CE, I am looking for paid graphic artists who can do custom graphics -- although I'm not looking very hard at the moment. Psst, don't tell the mods I am making this request, but my email address is ... rats I was caught.

I am not very good at texturing.

Maybe we can both talk Seth into doing some textures for us.

I know he is good with them.

My stuff is very limited so I try to keep it as simple as possible.

Here is a modified nurse. (no hat so she just another generic girl now)

Quote: "I hate sucking at this, nothing works and I added the texture and everything.

You guys are probably sick of helping me so you don't have to anymore, thankyou for your help."

Oh yeah Kerrby, I almost forgot. (cuz you new)
Every time you edit a character's texture, you need to delete the .dbo and .bin files in order to see the updated change.
Otherwise, you will see the old texture and seem to have no change.
The program will make new ones based on the x file and the fpe, so don't worry about them.
You have to delete those two files before running FPSC in order to see the changes you made to the character.
If you only see one then that's okay, just make sure to delete it.
so if you are using the "Thug (Unarmed)", then look for...
Thug (Unarmed).bin
Thug (Unarmed).dbo

Delete them both. (or either one if you see only one)

I forgot to tell you that before, so that is probably why it didn't seem to work.

My bad.

CE, I looked at your step by step post more closely. The first time I just skimmed at when I saw layers, I froze and then ignored. Any, this is not as hard as I thought it would be. I do have Paint Shop Pro X2 because I thought I would be serious about doing some texturing at least until I started looking at all that was involved. Whoa. Anyway I can vouch for this method. It is a much better method than using shaders; especially since shaders are specific to the type of graphics card one has.

I thank you for posting in response and showing an example or I might not have looked at it. Kerrby, since you are so much of a novice with these things and because I have the time, I might do a step by step with pics to do make these transparent textures. Since Paint.net is free and it allows for adjusting layers, I will see if I can't download it. I believe this also to be useful for the community, although, nobody has made any comments regarding this. I'm glad you have the subject matter as just plain "ghosts" because that will make it easy for people to do a search.

Addendum:

I just downloaded and installed paint.net (thanks for the link CE). One thing I like about this program is I will not have to use DDS Converter now. It supports DDS files. Yeah!

Thankyou Flatlander.

I tried your one with the full lightmapping and everytime I try and test it out it freezes and can't load the game. I gets stuck when loading the lightmaps.

I want mine to look like the fantasy guy(How he is at 62% transparency). What do you think would look good in a haunted school?
