My personal favorites:
Milkshape 3d for modeling(25 bucks)
Paint.NET for texturing(free)
Lithunwrap for UVmapping(free)

Some other free

modeling:

Blender
Anima8tor
wings3d

texturing:
gimp(texturing software)

Expensive stuff:
3ds Max
Autodesk Maya
Photoshop

I'd start with what I use, or if you want all free, use blender instead of MS3D.

Milkshape has got a 28 day trial and the tutorials they provide are easy enough to follow.
For user friendlyness I'd say give that a go plus it does everything you need to do to be able to succesfully get your media into FPS creator.

I assumed you wanted this and not get into modelling in generic, otherwise what would you be doing here?

If you like it after the trial, it's worth paying a couple of bucks for I'd say especially with all the new features that have been added in the last year.

um i do believe it's a 30 day trial and MS3D is the easiest to use of the modelling programs blender has the worst interface i've ever seen.
