Well, thats not what normally happens from my replys, but hey, whatever floats the boat.

Quote: "those worst hit probably didn't even own a radio, let alone a TV, and the warning systems just weren't in place anyway even if they all did."

Those worst hit would be the small back-water islands that had huge populations (as most countrys in that region do TBH)... that are completely wiped out.

Quote: "(am not directly referring to you Eric)"

So your indirectly refering to me?

Anyway, I personally think there was a HUGE underestimation of the waves from the people even in those videos. Of course those we\'re smaller ones, but I've been on the boardwalk in AC during a stormy day... you can see even 5 foot waves off in the distance. So (more clearly then last time) i am trying to say is that the people on the beaches underestimated what was coming... and/or didn't have the time to get away even if they tried, so they just kissed there asses good bye.

Quote: "Posting the videos anywhere for any purpose is a bit insensitive, but leaving them without a reason manages to convey the impression you put them there for no other reason than sheer enjoyment."

I agree he didn't really have a point when he posted the videos... he didn't even describe anything and left it to poor exeat to type up a description.

Quote: "Most of these people dont understand enough about what has happened to react in any other way. Same as the WTC and Beslam in September, they dont understand enough about them, but still decide to post."

I think it is more of a fact that some of us don\'t care. Alot of people take it as "It hasn't happened to me, who cares" and there opinions fully reflect that. MY opinion is that its sad, it happened, i'll throw my loose change in the donation jar at the gas station... but i won't stop eveyrthing i have done for this tradgedy. I won't change my daily routine... nada.. and i didn't for 9/11. Even though i live in one of the countrys biggest target zones (Deseret Chemical Weapons Dsiposal Plant is just a few miles up hwy 36), i still don't change my daily routine, or the way i think. Disasters happen... life goes on for some of us.

Quote: " its a mockery of mass death. "

Erm, i think this sprung because 1 person made the comment of "it was sorta funny that in all this foreign language screaming, we here a "Holy crap!" in it". I don't take that as a mockery, i feel that was jsut pointing out a small little quirk. Of course, there we\'re a few insensitive posts that said basiclly "That region can blow me". That i do not agree with... but it is an opinion none the less.

Anyway.. my typing is starting to slurr... so i shall quit while i still have a head.

It was more than just one comment (and in more places than just this single thread). The overall response just leaves a lot to be desired. I do appreciate that some people are anally retarded enough to think it's funny, but they can post about it in another forum from now on.

Ok, did anyone even watch that video? This is a short clip where a guy with a hand-held camera taped a wave that came crashing down and ran surprisingly far upshore. This guy, whilst filming, outran the wave and wasn't touched by a drop of water. No one was hurt.

Of course I don't find the disaster funny, but putting aside those that were injured and killed, it is amusing to see the surprise when a wave ran a little further inshore than expected. Did you see me call the other videos funny? No, that's because they weren't, they showed the horrific effect of the Tsunami but the one in question, didn't. In terms of the disaster, it probably wasn't the best comment to make, but if that video wasn't related then I'm sure you'd see the humour in it too.

I would like to make it clear that I do apologise if I offended anyone though, it was unintentional and I shall think before I am so hasty to hit the 'Post' button in the future.

Cool, looks like Canada is giving more now. My province as well as other have pledged around $8m each, and federal Canada government has pledged $40m PLUS they're going to meet, dollar for dollar, the Canadian people's donations. Now I don't feel so bad for the sanity of our people

EDIT:

And to the ones that said people probably just stood and watched the waves sweep them away are, frankly, idiots. Some of the waves were how high, 30 ft? And they were travelling 500 mph. Nobody can outrun that

Some of the less seasoned members in here dishonoring people "they dont know" need to realize that they are human too. If it was your family, Im sure you just wouldnt understand how someone from another country would even think about cracking jokes or gesturing that they dont care about your circumstances.
Say your B.S to the victims, or their families and make sure someone gets it all on camera when your @$$ gets kicked further up the beach than the waves went OK?
Have a good day. And no I didnt mean that, AT ALL.

(If this thread gets locked, I'm just glad to have the opportunity to post this.)

The power of the net allows us to share information as never before. I had thought the thread title was a sufficient comment about the linked contents. I had thought that if a (single still) picture can convey a thousand words, these videos speak for themselves.

As Gir has accurately noted, many of the 'scarier' videos probably are not available, therefore it is not wise to extrapolate conclusions based on the limited input. Here is a picture link that was posted on the LLRGT forum:

After you see this montage you may form a better, more informed mental image of the event.

For my part, I like to see the positive in every situation.

From reading with horror about the tragic events in question, I have been heartened by the hugely and impressively generous and totally selfless response of the international community. Cynical people often observe that human nature is such that one human does not seem to care about another human's well being. Yet what we have seen in the past few days is a vast amount of money donated (at the time of writing over USD1.2bn), the diversion of huge resources and an outpouring of sympathy and concern. The essential brotherhood of all mankind has yet again spoken.

If you ask me, this speaks volumes about the true nature of the human spirit. As ever, I am awed by it.

So what's your point? When was the last time a natural disaster killed this many--- that's the point. Of course many people die every day in other ways, but when something like this happens, it hits home to many of us who might have friends/family over there. Some of us actually have the capacity to feel bad for others, and others such as yourself obviously don't.

Just because there are other things happening in the world right now, this is one of the biggest natural disasters to occur in what, 40 years? Look at the whole picture instead of your narrow-minded view through rose-tinted glasses. Not everyone is as fortunate as you and me to grow up in a first-world rich country.

old age is a natural disaster, so is heart conditions. And if i grw up in a third world coutnry id do something about it being a 3rd world country, just cause they have the bad luck to have been struck by a tidal wave does not mean that we should focus our efforts on helping homeless people in some foreign country instead of helping homeless in our own. I always give atleast $5 to homeless people in my city when they come up and ask me for cange, and i always feel harsh when i haev no money to give. but so sorry that I don't give a damn about some people i don't know in an area I can't do anything about.

So if you ignorant and self-satisfied americans and australians dont yet know there has been killed more americans than in WTC 2001. And 10 000 people from Germany, Britain, Italy, France etc.

And 140 000 people from Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand etc.

old age is a worldwide problem. not local natural diasters.

everyone deals with old age the best they can.

uberwiggett you do realise your doing almost the opposite. homeless people are like 60% their own fault for being there. some of the younger ones, just run away from home. many just lose jobs, their home, then a downward spiral to gloom. but in asia, they are homeless or dead because of nature.

notice a slight difference between homeless people in different countries?

Phil's post is best here. Why are we complaining? That gets us no where. It's obvious that there are people out there that do care. Heck, would this post be here if nobody cared? Thanks, Phil for bringing up that silver-lining!

And thus comes the mystical ending to a miserable thread. Thanks for making the journey out here, just don't stay for the after-thread nibbles because you'll be sure to find that they're non-existant.

Oh, and just in case you're completely oblivious to the fact, this thread is being locked for some of the ridiculously dumb comments made above.
