A challenge if the moderators of this forum approve this post.

Final Rules
OK, this should be the final rules for the contest:

1: The contest begins at this moment, all entries should be posted in this post no later than Feb 7, 2005. Contestants should state their forum name and intent to compete, the name of their game and basic theme of the game. You can already be in the process of making the game at this moment, completion and submission must be before the judging date of April 30, 2005.
The winner shall receive a prize of $300.00 US dollars from UkSoft, to be sent via Western Union.
The submissions must include their source code which will be used for tutorials for db forum members in the future. During the contest the contestants are not required but are asked to submit updates on their game progress with screen shots to this thread at least every 2 weeks.

2: Game size has been eliminated, however since this is for the forum good and clear remarks in the source code should be included. The contest will include Dark Basic Classic and Dark Basic pro, no other languages will be allowed, the game will be of 3d design. You will be judged on the quality for the game in the following areas. The game is complete and has no bugs, your matrix quality, your object quality, your control console quality, appearance and movement of the characters and objects. Multipule levels, communication between characters or communication of information between the main character and objects.
You should also demonstrate some kind of AI in the program, an intro at the beginning of the game, and instructions on how to play the game, a method to pause the game, a method to save and reload parts of the game. You will also be judged on how the characters react to objects in the game(ie collision, or using objects). The use of dll's will be allowed, the use of remote scripts will be allowed, Matrix editors will be allowed.

Judging will be on a point system of the above stated items. The number of judges will be 5 and they will be selected from members of the forum, they will be selected during the contest and remain secret until the competion is over.

Employees or contractors of UkSoft can not enter the contest or play any part of the judging.

I have talked with several people in the forum and this reflects the
most desired rules. Also if this contest goes correctly and smoothly we will do it again six months from now.

sincerely,

Marina Doba

Sounds like fun - however I think that if you guys provided some media a lot more people will be interested - especially solo folk, because a lot of would-be entrants simply could'nt cope with the media side. Perhaps a player model with male and female NPC models - you could just give a basic texture so people can draw there own.

I'd suggest contacting Rich directly through email, I doubt there'll be a problem, except he might not want to be responsible for the prize, maybe you'll end up having to organising that yourselves.

If I made a Game at a minimum 65 meg's, then that would be a 'Proper Game' so would the winner Have to make the source Code Public?

Mson,

Thanks for the post. Well you could already be working on your project now, that doesn't matter, just as long as its finished by the ending date. Yes the winner or winners and contestants have to post the source code of their games. This is something that this forum needs is good source codes for a game engines. The prize compensates at least a little back to the writers, I wish their could be a bigger prize I think 500 would be more fairer but we only have 300 so far.

I know that you mean, but I was just thinking that Downloading a Minimum of 65 Megs from the forum might take a while!

Mson,

We will donate the server space on one of our servers to hold the media package. So the forum won't have to waste the bandwidth.

I thinking the official start date should be Feb 01 unless someone here says we can't do it tonight.

Just to be fair: Anybody want to suggest some rule changes

You don't have to take up 65MB to make a decent game. I mean look at diablo! It takes up about 8MB hard drive space and it is a great game.

[Edit]Oh yeah! I'll have a go! How are you going to stop people starting before February the first? Also is this only DBC?[Edit]

I am going to help Marina out a little on the subject of the 65 megs.
It doesn't matter if you have been making the game for months. If you want to enter it, it should be finished by the ending date. As far as the 65 megs go thats not much if you include media, we do stuff here all the time thats 70 and 80 megs. A highly detailed character with bmps can be 2 megs. The 65 megs can be flexible a 50 meg game would work, I just don't want to see a bunch of 2 and 3 meg games that take 1 day to make as the main line entries. We are trying to get a good template for some large game engines here for the forum, if someone else wants to make a 2 or 3 meg contest then go ahead and sponsor the prize, but I will sponsor only something that is at least around 50 megs.

EDIT: Or something that simulates a bigger game of that size by cheating on the media, and not the scripting " I will be open to suggestions on that if anybody wants to give some rule writing a try."

I hope this helps clear things up,

Geeze, this sounds like fun! I wish I could join but i got too much going on right now. I actually got a base engine going. It's about 200 Megs I think and it's not even a game yet! I might release if I have time, but I'm working on converting something to .NET right now. Also, I agree with Andrew. Instead of making, say, a megabyte requirement, maybe a media count requirement. But that is up to you.

PS - Marina, your Avatar looks like that girl in Boston legal to me for some reason... that really you?!

Edit: Just remembered something: Is this DBC only?

Oh my, I would like to enter. When will this competition start?

I've got a big 2D game planned, instead of releasing it I could submit it for the competition instead

Are 2D games and using dbpro valid?

Can I just ask why we have to use matrices?
If we don't then I'm sorry but that is the impression I got above.
Also, if we do, can I just make one into some water in the game that goes inthe background? The thing is matrices are slow and texturing them is annoying when you get lines between tiles. Also, my game being an RPG, will be heavily dungeon/indoor based.

What is meant by console? I know I should know but I don't.

Andrew,

You can use something besides matrix, the term in the rules for this is just referring to the land or sea level.

Pricey - Can't wait to see how it turns out! How are you doing water? A matrix? A shader?

I've got my level editor started. I'm nearly finished making my object library and I'm working on loading positioning and rotating. Then I'll work on adding scripts and saving the lot. If all goes well I'll upload screens soon.

Not bad.
Can I make a suggestion?
Have a look at the post in this forum called Best Matrix For FPS or similar. There is some example media and a link to the original code. Those memblock matrices are faster and much nicer to the DB ones.

A question:
Would you guys prefer a gameplay like Diablo or Ultima?
Ultima is sort of hack and slash but the camera follows the player.
I would like to know which style to go for as it will affect level design.
