I was reading through the forums when I noticed the TGC puzzle comp link above the posts, and after reading the rules immediately got to work on the coolest puzzle game (in my opinion, that is) that I knew how to program. After rigorous amounts of work I have a working puzzle game and menu system, although both are currently littered with so many bugs that I'm afraid to post a demo. Fortunately I have screens of what I've got so far, as well as a nearly complete layout.

GAME INFO:
This is a remake of the greatest calculator game ever - Block Dude. I have the TI-89 version called Block Man, but it's the exact same game with better graphics. My idea is to take the entire concept to the next level... 3D. Not only that, but I plan to have 11 levels including the practice level, and I've tried to code the game cleanly enough so I can do it without too much trouble. every two levels there will be a different area, such as islands, spaceports, haunted houses, and so on. I also am planning on drawing a few cut scenes in between the levels, becuase I like storyline, even if they don't contribute to the gameplay. One last thing is that in each of the levels there will be a golden key. this key isn't required to beat the level, but if you can collect all of them in one go, you'll get a password that opens up a cool place called block town. That last feature will be in the game depending on how much time I have. I don't know if this sounds like a little much, but I've alreadly worked out most of the game mechanics, so my hopes are that I'll reach all of my goals. Oh yeh, it's progammed in DB Classic ... sorry.

I almost forgot to say what the orgininal Block Dude was!!! Block Dude, for those of you who haven't heard of it, is a puzzle game where you're this little guy in a world full of blocks. You have to get to the exit of each level to progress, but in your way are many unmovable bricks. there are blocks which you can pick up on your head, which you must position wisely to reach the door. Each level gets harder and harder, and the game is very addictive.

X
This is a picture of the main menu. The large head follows your pointer, and is replaced by the corresponding text when you click on a button. Right now the head is an old mario one I made, but it will soon be replaced by Block Man's head.

X
An early Block Man model carrying a block on his head- the black backround will be replaced by different scenery in the final game. Also you can see a yellow block man spinning in the left corner. this will be replaced by a key.

X
Block Man near the exit door to the beta level (I plan on making this the second level in the game). Like all other graphics in the game, I will most likely replace this with with a better model once I build one.

If anyone has questions, positive feedback, or constructive critisism, I'd love to hear it.

I can't seem to be able to post screenshots... I'll try later...

That game rox! i'll definently test this game! Make sure you include baddies, along with the same setup for the special level (the TI-89 version) but i'd change the password...

Baddies are definitely part of the gameplay , as well as obsicals that kill you, but they can both be overcome by using blocks, as I don't want to stray too far from the puzzle idea.

Also, I'm not actually going to use any of the same levels, as all of them are 2D and all of mine are 3D- this will make sense when get figure out how to post my screens. But The special area sounds much cooler (and easier to program) than my vauge notion of block town, so I'll definitely make an exeption to the 3D levels and have the special area be the bonus indtead.

And don't worry about the password, becuase I've forgoten them all!
Any chance you could give me the password to the special level so I can map it out?

Nitrixik Studios: My game will only take four letter passwords... it didn't even work with a scpace at either end. Maybe I have the wrong version- Blockman v3.41. If this isn't the one you have could you piont me to the correct version?

Here's a list of the different areas and their baddies & obsticles:
Islands
-none

Desert
-sand cyclones

Jungle
-spiked tiger pits
-carniverous plants

Spaceport
-highway of flying cars
-electrical fences
-gaurd-bots

Haunted House
-ghosts
-zombies
-pools of slime
-spining spiked pillars

the list above isn't certian, although I know how to program them all and feel they will look very cool in the game.

UPDATES
since my last post I have changed a number of things.
-replaced the door and key models with new and improoved versions of them.
-built Block Mans head for the menu
-made my own pointer for the menu instead of using the standard one.
-fixed a movement bug that made you get caught when the blocks wern't 100% in line with the grid.
-made it so blocks can only be picked up if there's nothing on top of them.
-made it so Block Man wont jump unless he collides with a wall he can jump over.
-added in the restart level feature.

Here are the pictures I tried to show in my first post. They're a bit outdated now...

An early Block Man model carrying a block on his head- the black backround will be replaced by different scenery in the final game, so none of the levels will have the boring black backround. Also you can see a yellow block man spinning in the left corner. this will be replaced by a key.

After looking at these screenshots, I have to admit that the game looked considerably better when I ran it, and that it looks much better now.

Anime Blood: Thanks! You programing a blockman game too? It would be very awesome to see another character oriented puzzle game!

Nitrixik Studios: I don't mind showing the code at all- but for now I'd rather just post it here. I must warn you though, this code is very shakey and object oriented, and in DB classic.

O, i get it, nothing "fancy", just a hidden block that you see if it collides with any object infront of one you w ant to pick up. Only thing i don't get:

if object collision(12,200)>0 then wait 150 : make object cube 250,0
if object collision(12,201)>0 then wait 150 : make object cube 251,0
if object collision(12,202)>0 then wait 150 : make object cube 252,0

do you also hide the objects he picks up later? or delete them? i'm guessing 200, 201, and 202 are the boxes you can pick up, but why make the cubes with a size of 0? what do those do? (or is this some DBC thing?)

Anime Blood: That's fine. Compos are always better when there aren't too many copies of any one game.

Nitrixik Studios: That's what I meant when I said it was object oriented... those cubes the size of zero are there so that if they exist the blocks will stay on your head... this is one of the many pieces of code I need clean up before I program any other levels.

As for updates, I've built a few more models.
-Block Mans high poly head for menu completely finished
-Improoved Block Man model
-sand cyclone completed
-a few other baddy models are partialy completed

As soon as the game has enough graphical improvements, I'll post some more screens.

EDIT: This is a bit off topic, but how do I put a picture into my sig?

I know I've made quite a few posts today, but I've been sick and have had lots of time to program.

I've gotten rid of pratcicaly all the bugs in the BlockMan beta that made me afriad to post a demo, which came as a huge shock to me. Way back two days ago, I was the only one who could play the game without runing into a huge glitch that would leave the player stuck inriversably. Now the gameplay is so smooth that I almost feel ready to star building more levels.

I'm not going to post what updates I've made, as there are so many and each by itself is trivial, but does the game great good all togeather.

Basicaly what I'm trying to say is that I may post the first demo with my next batch of screenshots.

Final Epsilon: Ah, yes. I remember times when every student in my class was playing Block dude/Blockman as the math teacher droned on about something or other... strangely, we all did very poorly in that class.

Nitrixik Studios: Thanks. The passord there doesn't seem to work though, as I can't find an exclamation piont on the calculator...

On my Ti-83 Silver Ed. Plus, I had to use wTF - that's lower case for the w and upper case for the TF. Dear god that's a wtffy level if I ever saw one... I don't even know where to start!

Well, the first demo's completed, although you can't download it yet, cause of technical difficulties (see edit).

here's a pic.

I've finaly fixed nearly all the bugs I could find in the game, so I'm going to see how much people like it, if they do at all that is.
This demo is only the beta level I've built, not even with the menu attached to it.

Controls are:
up key - look forwards
down key - look backwards
left key - look left
right key - look right
shift key - move / jump in whatever direction you're facing
return key - pick up / put down block
space bar - restart level
escape key - quit

If anyone can think of a better way to control Block Man, PLEASE let me know!

EDIT: DB spot gives me an error every time I try to register... Are there any other site I can use to set up downloads??
