Over the past few weeks, the new Doctor Who series has been making most people happy. I was particularly impressed with The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances. Although Billie Pipers acting could be better, her character could also be far worse, as could the Doctor himself, but I think they are doing really well up to now with this series. Too bad it all has to come to an end soon.

Any views/opinions?

I really enjoyed the 2 episodes of it, I even stayed up till 24:00 watching it ( I don’t really watch TV after 12, it's all crap ).

I liked the way they thought of the Nano Geens, Witch did not recognize the human face because they had not seen a human structure before, So they tried fixing every one to have a gas mask because the first thing they healed was the little boy who had his gas mask on.

Eddie, the box set is already out.
I missed last week because of the damn Eurovision crap.

After all that stuff on the news last week about the scariness of that doctor guy (played by the one-foot-in-the-grave bloke) changing, then only to have that Lance Corporal do it this week.

This said.. I was a little disturbed how they were claiming almost every bloke during the war was gay.

I'll be sorry to see Christopher Eccelston not be the Doctor in Series 2, more sad to know that Billy Piper now will only do the first 3-4 episodes before also quitting. It's a shame because I'm really liking this new series, and I have a feeling it'll be seriously different with another Doctor and Companion so soon.

But the good thing is , When ever they want to make a new series they can use really any one because he is 800 years old already

He can travel in time, So you could look different each time

actually he is 900 and he changes everytime he is killed, hence why the every doctor has a different personality

According to the original series, he can only regenerate 12 times. Unless he finds a "1up" pickup on the floor .

Yes, was a very good couple of episodes. There are only 3 left to go before the end of the current series.
Well, the Time Lords were probably controlling the number of regenerations, so with them gone, he may be able to get past that limit.

I suspect Billy Piper decided to leave shortly after Christopher did - however, Billy's agent managed to get the timing more or less correct this time.

Yes, the last two episodes have been excellent. A real demonstration of classic British Sci-Fi at its very finest.

As for the Doctor's regenerations, he's potentially in more trouble than you realise. While Time Lords are supposed to only have 12 regenerations, this assumes that the Hartnell Doctor was his first "life". In a couple of episodes over the years its been suggested that this wasn't his first life. In fact, its been suggested he's not even a real Time Lord. In some episodes there have been cryptic references to him being around at the time of Rassilion (which should be impossible) and in the Paul McGann telemovie it was said he was half human, and that he considered himself to be British to boot! This half human stuff has been disavowed by the BBC though.

Also, we've encountered "potential" other Doctors. In the Trial of a Time Lord season (Colin Baker era) the Valeyard, the Time Lord's prosecutor, was revealed to be the Doctor's final regeneration, where the Doctor had turned evil. This was then fudged a bit towards the end by there being a suggestion by the Master that the Valeyard was only a "potential" future self of the Doctor.

Mind you, this is Sci-Fi so lets not let something as simple as plot consistency hold us back. If the Master can exceed all his regenerations and get a new set of lives, why can't the Doctor?

I think it'll probably be covered about the Doctor's regeneration and such at the start of the next series. They seem to be slowly retelling the history of the Doctor from episode to episode.

Without the Timelord Council, I reckon that he'll be able to get away with whatever he likes. Though I'd love to know why the heck he's the last one left.. what makes him so special?

Definately alot of questions, but the Beeb hasn't really ever been conserned with continuity in it's programs. To be honest, while half of us probably have been kinda geeky and followed the story closely to understand it over the years.. fact remains unlike Americans with Star Trek, most of us don't really give a toss.

We'll bitch about the plot issues.. then watch it again next week heh

The reason why there isn't usually much continuety, is because there is no "bible" on which to work from - whether Russell Davies has fixed that is unknown...

First, Rich, I am NOT your mummy.

Secondly, the main reason why the Doctor has not left Earth orbit is because Russell T. Davies wanted to try and reconnect Dr. Who to the ordinary viewing audience in this series. He wanted to get away from pure Sci-Fi and back to entertaining TV. Full marks to him for succeeding.

Thirdly, I can't think of a thirdly.

I watched an episode a while back. Disappointed me slightly, didn't really look like a scifi show, it looked like one of those dramas you get on CBBC. Probably same filming unit. And Billie Piper's acting didn't really help

It was also more normal than I expected. It was the one where she travels back in time and stops her father getting killed.

I suppose coming from a Star Trek background scifi to me means inverse warp fields and quantum realignment tingymajigs. Story was quite good though.

Just my potted thoughts. Again I must stress Billie Piper's acting. "I want chips".

Facts are meaningless.
You could use facts to prove anything that's even remotely true.

I REALLY liked that episode, it wasn't very Sci-Fi; but quite a tear jerker.

I prefer Dr Who over Star Trek, for the simple reason that it's not about the Sci-Fo mumbo-jumbo; or a lesson to be learnt each episode, like a modern day Hans-Christian Anderson story.

It's all about the characters. The writer of this new Dr Who is definately trying more to explore the characters and get people to connect with the series more than throwing them around the galaxy for sci-fi filled fun. That said, the series as a whole has had it's moments.

Casandra for example was a very good episode for Sci-Fi freaks.

Yeah, I agree with that, although I prefer Trek. Even with the "What can we do?!?!?!?", "I know, let's invert the quantum time modulator and couple it to the transporter matrix to provide a flux in the....". All happy, end of episode. Erm... A lot of the time then followed by "But we should *never* do that again, as it causes rifts in the space time continium". Aha.

I just never liked the *feel* of Dr. Who if you know what I mean. I was more a Space 1999 kid. Loved that series. Or Buck Rogers. But then I had a thing for Wilma (who didn't). etc etc. Interestingly, if you watch Buck Rogers as an adult then suddenly the Princess becomes a whole lot more appealing than Wilma. Beeby beeby beeby etc.

Saying that I may watch the new Dr. Who now. Since everyone seems to like it that is.

Cheers

He excels at moaning. He must have done it at college

Either that or Nildram are controlling his brain.

The way I see it, Star Trek is the sci-fi of ideas, which means a lot of people have trouble "plugging into" it so generally the audience of those with generally above average IQ`s who watch it, not that I have nothing against them.

On the other hand, Doctor Who is an emotional sci-fi program, and because of that people can plug-in to it much more easily and enjoy it.

Oh, and apparently the Cybermen will be back in the next series, with a 2 part episode tentively called The Satan Pit.

What is your take on Captain Jack?

I have also been watching the first of the Tom Baker serials. The resemblance between him and Christopher Eccleston is uncanny...apart of course from his hair and addiction to jelly babies. Do you think this is the reason that Eccleston was picked?

Doubt it - he was probably cheaper that Bill Nighy... And who would probably have lasted more than 1 series as well...

I see no problem with ol' Captain Jack and his bi-sexuality, although I didn't see some sexual references that some people make out at IMDB...

Not the Bill Nighy argument again

What ever happened to Richard E. Grant?

Can you not see the resemblance between Eccleston and Tom Baker?
apart from I think that Tom Baker was older and had more sophisticated dialogue.

Yes, a two parter - Bad Wolf & Parting of the ways. Rumours exist that the Doctor regenerates in the second episode, whilst others say its a cliff-hanger and the regeneration will be in the Christmas episode.
I liked this episode - very funny in parts... Could also feel sorry for the Slaveen - until its motives were made clear...
