Hey guys,

I have friend who recently has been asking me if i can teach him how to program... (using DarkBasicPro because he knows i use it and he wants to start with a "Basic" language) he's not an idiot when it comes to computers but he's never programmed before...

I don't mind answering his questions and helping him learn the language, but i'm trying to find a good tutorial to give him a jumpstart on... (so i don't have to tell him everything from scratch) So i've been looking around... and so far i haven't found a nice begining tutorial in DarkBasicPro for somebody who hasn't programmed before at all...(i would show him the limit rush one but i think he would get discouraged if he couldn't run the code at the end... ) he could buy the "beginner's guide to darkbasic game programming" book but he doesn't want to spend $40

So i was just wondering if anybody around here has a favourite begining tutorial for DarkBasicPro that they would be so kind as to provide a link to (or at least it's name )

Look in newcomers section and there are a few links to tutorials.

Hamish's one for absolute beginners seems quite nice;

You should also direct him to some of the beginner tute's from the TGC newsletters. There have been quite a few recently.

Ehhh. David T's code from merc2, when he "accidently" put it in the code box

Seriously, I never really learned much of anything from any tutorials, I just messed around with boxes and stuff, putting stuff on the screen.

I'd recommend Hamish's tutorial for a complete beginner, and then have him skim over my Curved Basic ones once he wants to start doing something specific(moving camera, matrices, lighting, etc.).
If nothing, I learned from the built in tutorial in the manual.

A book? I hate book. Book is stupid.

Buy the Darkbasic book? Its for DBC but its still of some assistance for complete newcomers.

Once he picks up on the basic programming principles in Hamish's tutotrial or the book you can show him Binary Moon. It shouldn't be long after that he gets to a point where you can give him a problem to solve and he'll be able to work it out with basic knowledge of programming and some quick checks in the html reference. He might also like C++ though. My friend cannot stand Basic, and his logic gets all fuddled up when he tries to code in DB, but after a month of two of C++ he worked out how to write a small little file encryptor. The encryption wasn't good (split up the array of characters 8 ways and went from there), but it worked. So, we're looking into DarkSDK, Torque, Irrlicht, and TrueVision3d now.

I'm going to eat you!
