"Lager is actually a type of beer, the other type is an ale."
Yes But apparantly its correct to call any type of ale simply "beer" (many varieties) whereas lager is officially "lager beer", almost as a variant. In america they don't really have any ales, or stouts except specific brands like guiness, but what they commonly call "beer" is lager... I think! I'm hardly the authority on it though

"pop idol, we'll just say no more about."
Don't get me started again!

I can assure you we are a more amusing nation than the Germans.

We even let in people from Germany and the UK who are weary of their boring countries and are eager to re-locate!!

That's pure sacrilege. Kids running about in ninja suits may be childish. But feudal japanese spies and assassins are about as childish as hardcore porn.

Ninjas are probably the best reason to study 6th - 17th century japanese history!

I see you guys have all abandoned the origin of Ninjas.

When will people stop looking at feudal ninjas as dudes completly in black who fight 50 people at a time?

Examples of Ninjas were samurai who dressed as peasants, snuck into homes at night, and stabbed people. I don't see where the awsomeness factor applies, especially when you look at some of the crazy sh*t samurai did like have duels to the death in a public market places.

So they were like the english army?(Note: this was not aimed to be an insult to the british as a people, jst they're military tactics. I love the british, most of my freinds are british... just kidding... I have no freinds). I just wrote an entire paragraph about nothing, cool!

Actually, ninjas were renowned for doing some very bad stuff. 'Just' killing someone was pretty tame for them.
Stabbing someone in the stomach (for an excruciatingly slow death) while they had to watch the ninja doing very bad things to their helpless wife was more their style.

Female ninjas were more the undercover agents, getting work in a castle, working their way up from kitchen maid until finally, several years later, being able to stab or poison the Daimyo (sp). At which point they'd probably be killed for it.

Nothing terribly glamerous about the 'real' ninjas. But the 'mythical' ninjas that we've been fed are far cooler of course

Btw, Ninjas were not stealthy Samurai. Ninjas were considered coweredly by Samurai as it totally defied their code of honour. While Samurai were facing each other and fighting to the death, Ninjitsu was all about shadows, stealth, entry, escapology and even impersonation.

As far as I understand it, it started from lowly towns folk that needed protection from Samurai war lords and developed hit and run tactics (in a similar way to the colonial americans used against the british), and it was very effective. But the eventual adoption and use of the ninja was more than just assassination. They were used mostly for espionage and also for kidnapping. Obviously they have some mythical mystique about them because of all the funky things they could do like block swords with their forearms (which was achieved with strips of metal sewn into their clothes) and climb up walls with spider spikes (and even across ceilings).

I mean, basically they were feared and despised, but their training and uses went far beyond assassin, and most of their legendary/mythical skills are based in some form of truth. Pretty amazing nuttjobs.

I thought Samurai were just totally useless at moving around (huge amount of armour) but good with swords?

Depends what class they were. Samurai is a general term for the army of that period. I think most people think of Samurai as the swordsmen with their katanas. Their armour was very lightweight (although looked very bulky) and allowed them to be agile.

Samurai still encompasses a load of other classes though, including Naginata (think I got that right) who were exactly as you described - big f-off armour, really slow moving, but used massive spear type axes. Basically, all their archers, spearmen, swordsmen etc. were refered to as Samurai. Samurai is more of a code of honour/way of life than a specific fighting unit. Which is exactly what Ninjitsu was considered coweredly by Samurai.

Well, "Samurai" literaly means "Fighting Men". Obviously Ninjas were considered cowerdly and they weren't exactly known for their extreme katana prowess.

My Dad watched Teenage Ninja Turtles before he actually learned about real ninjas, and in the mean-time assumed that ninjas were good guys who went around saving the under-dogs hehe. Was quite a shock when he read about what they actually did.

Samurai didn't specificlly wear heavy armor unless threy were in a clan or fighting for a lord. The Ronin Samurai had no armor at all, and moved like rubber bands shot at 80mph.

You guys watched Seven Samurai I assume? Pimpin film.

I think Ronin are leaderless Samurai. Not 100% on that, but when their master and heirs were killed, the family is as good as dead. So Samurai within the family ranks are masterless and become Ronin. Or they might be expelled from the family. That might explain why you think of Ronin as armourless nuttjobs moving at 80mph. I suppose if expelled, they'd be stripped of their possessions, including their armour (which is probably sporting the family crest, so they couldnt keep it). These guys would probably become mercenaries or something similar.

Yeah, I do like all these Japanese Ninja and Samurai shizzle. I wish their were more Sengoku period type games about.

Well, thats what that french movie with lots of cars reckoned. Something about their leader being killed, and they basically work for other people like hired assassins. Now what was the name of that movie?....

If you're thinking of the one in France with Robert De Niro, Sean Bean and a bunch of IRA people and the Russian Mafia ..... that one was called Ronin.

Some pretty hilarious posts. Especially the ninja spam and interesting history of ninjas.

To computer nerd: If I had any power I'd smite you. If you don't like the thread then don't post in it. Why don't people understand that. You don't need to come in here and start crap. Simple as that. Your welcome in here by all means. But ever since your first post you've had a bad attitude, and I don't care for it very much.

Peace

Yes, Ronin Samurai weren't a different breed of Samurai that moved quickly, they just couldn't afford armor.

Alot of them wandered for a while, hence why people poke at it and call it the "Wandering Age".

Always wanted to try Kendo for that matter. Since both of you are wearing armor, you can go insane at each-other without fear of injury.

haha. I suspected as much, but thought I'd answer just in case. It's probably good to give it a mention anyways for people who've not seen it. I think I have it on an old VHS somewhere too, but having it on VHS is as good as not having it. I don't even own a VHS player anymore.

@Megaton

Yep, kendo would be cool to learn. But it's kinda like the subject videos of this thread. They'd all be cool to learn, it's just none of us can actually be arsed.

For sure ever seen the french TAXI(not the one with Danny DeVito, or the one with *sudders* Queen Latipha, and not the one with Robert DeNiro). That is a class movie. The best part is when the guys are racing and suddenly the taxi guy comes onto the track and starts yelling that their going to slow.
