Jeku, FTW, you can make a computer do anything you program it to do.

That being said, you can program general shape recognition, you can program color blending (tell weither the colors are random or a part of a greater image), you can program image comparison. So all in all, yes, you can program a computer to tell if an image is interesting. But you would need to define interesting.
And you want to know something interesting... all that is really mathimatics and pixil analization, so, dbp should actuall be able to run it. Problem is making the analization software.

Great, talking about recognition make me now want to start making algorithms again, look what you all did.

you cant program a computer to alter the very fabric of space an time, re changing the entire laws of anything, can you? Maybe later, but with our technology, you cant.

very fabric of space an time?

We are making mini-black holes... Who says we can't alter time?

Besides, if we know how to alter time, then we would alter time to keep it a secret.

Eh? Show me this thing on mini-blackholes. Because I truely doubt we are. A critical mass state like that could only be achieved when fission runs out..on a masssive scale. From millions of trillawatts of energy to 0 in seconds...

I know that. Remember our other conversation where you said computers can "forget" to do things?

And anyways, you just reiterated what I posted. A computer can't tell what's interesting, so you'd have to give it guidelines.

But NO, A.I. isn't at a point right now where it can make blanket judgement calls.

you know what? a black and white 8x8 grid has 2^64 possible pictures... perhaps not the best idea......

Quote: "Like I said before you could cut out loads and loads of 'boring' pictures just by implimenting a few checks:

1) No pictures where every pixel is the same colour
2) No pictures where most (say 75%+, maybe even 60%+) pixels are the same colour
3) No pictures where deffinate (but 'boring') patterns exist (i.e. diagonal lines)
"

1) That is (1 / (x*y*(16700000^3)) * 100)% of the total, hardly worthwhile.
2) You just excluded line art, including Da Vinci's blueprints for a propeller-based flyimg machine.
3) You just lost a whole load of modern art and architecture-based images.

My point being, who decides the rules by which art is not confined?

make some coffee , 8x8 black and white icon generator for every possible icon, I got bored at 120,000 odd press space to exit.

Ah, thats only 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 pictures. Will speed read them by lunchtime....

Darn. Tried putting it through a number to word converter, but nothing I found can take that number. Rats. Someone write one.... Although not sure what those higher numbers are. Isn't the 744 trillion? So is 18,446,744 trillion images (rounded by a few billion). Bit more presentable. Or how about 18 million trillion images (rounded by millions of trillions ). Sounds like a kid's number now, or Austin Powers. A gillion billion drillion sillion... hehe..

Just program something incredibly complicated that can draw anything you ask of it. Much more obtainable. You know, "give me a house", and it gives a rough example. "Now merge it with that bird from Threshold". And there you go. Thresholdbirdhouse. Tops. Actually isn't there something being created now where you can search for certain pictures based on a simple drawing you scrawl down? Think the example I saw online was of a crude temple that then went off and found things that looked similar (ie. temple). Heh, just thought you would have all these blokes going to art class because they couldn't find the porn

You would need 2147483648GB in order to save every possible B&W image at 8x8 in bitmap format from my calculations.

Well let's think, there would be 2^(8 * 8) different combinations, that's 2^64.....

you would need 8 bytes for each image (it equates to 8 binary numbers with 1 for a dot and 0 for a gap), so (2^64)*8 bytes gives
147573952589676412928 bytes
divide by 1024 = 144115188075855872 kbytes
divide by 1024 again gives 140737488355328 MB
divide by 1024 again gives 137438953472 Gigabytes
or 134217728 Terrabytes to hold all possible 8x8 icons, thats a LOT of icons to sort through for the good ones

2^64 is how many bit combinations there are, which is 18446744073709551616. Divide that by 8 bits in a byte and you get 2305843009213693952 bytes.
2305843009213693952 bytes / 1024 / 1024 = 2199023255552 megabytes.
2199023255552 megabytes / 1024 = 2147483648 gigabytes.

@Me!, your figure is 64 times that amount.

oops!, well..I just KNEW if I put in the working then if it was wrong somebody would contradict me, I was just testing you honest~! , it`s still an ungodly lot of images for a mere 8x8 icon though, sorta puts the original "every possible image" post into perspective doesn`t it, I can imagine what even 640x480 in 256 colours would add up to, a bloody lot! (every frame of every movie ever made now or in the future for a start, an image of every piece of sheet music ever written, every engineering drawing ever made, an image of every page of every program listing from hello world to quake 99999ad, all the possible images of you for the rest of your life, and every one else on the planet as well (oooh! that could be embarrassing ), every possible scene now and for the rest of time, I for one am rather glad it isn`t possible

It IS possible to create every single picture at any resolution and quality RIGHT NOW. It's just too impractical to look at and store all of them.

Well with pictures we have a constraint pixels and what not. You'd have to specify the frequency ranges, length and amplitude. AND sounds can take up a hell of a lot more space than pictures.

in theory if someone tells you the number of bytes in a program, like 3ds max, and you make a file of that size, you could *randomly* rearrange the bytes in the file to form 3ds max. kinda like alchemy except realistic.

No, it is possible to *start* right now. Would be interesting for someone to work out the maths to calculate approx how much power (SETI type computer sharing probably most likely) would be required to produce X images in Y time. Interesting project for school methinks. My Maths teacher gave me a good GCSE grade just for a couple of similar problems when I was a kid. And I was a complete waster.

Supposing someone does write this program and create all the pictures possible, then how can time be never ending?

I don't know if that would make sence for you, but if time continued for ever, then wouldn't there just be more images and things that have never been seen before.

If you were to create every picture possible, then there would have to be a picture for every fraction of a second, from every point in space, from every angle, in different light conditions....PLUS most of the pictures would just be garbage. (isn't that a lot of pictures?)

Theoretically it is possible, but logically it doesn't seem like it is possible.

That is right but it dosn't have to wait for new inventions to arive before it can make a picture of them.

Anything is possible except for skiing through a revolving door.
It's kinda fun to do the impossible.
