The scariest game I've played is the original Half-Life. Those stupid little face-hugging buggers would make the little cute sounds then leap out of dark corners. Freaky!

And of course there's Superman 64, which is scary for other reasons

Superman 64 couldn't have been any worse if they had made it out of twine and Pop-Tarts. It nearly made me regret owning a N64.

When I first played RE2 back when I was younger, I was effected by some of the jumpy parts, but nowadays, RE seems more like a joke (but still fun) than a scary game.

King Kong, because it would get choppy when the big...HARD...enemies would get arround you and you can't aim, but that was on pc, its fine on 360.

Metroid Prime was pretty scary when those ghost-Chozos attack you. The room gets all dark and you here a horrible scream. Those guys pack a punch.

Wasn't there a gamespy listing of the top 10 scariest games of all time? I remember there was some textbased adventure game on there, heh might be fun to dig that article up sometime...

Minesweeper. The tensions unbearable.

Seriously though, I'd have to go with HL1 aswell. Running along a corridor without a care in the world and then something teleports right in front of you. I always end up spraying bullets halfway up the ceiling. Having said that, I don't play survival horror type games as I just don't enjoy them.

Doom 3 was probably the scariest I've ever played, as I'm not really into scary games.

Nothing creeped me out more than Call of Cthulthu: Dark Corners of the Earth. It's so dark, they purposefully wash out textures (probably to cut down on the abysmal loading), really creates an atmosphere. The people living in Innsmouth though really frighten you the first time you start playing, and then that part in the middle of the night....
I can't say anything, just go play it.

Thief, if you set your atmosphere. Turn off the lights, crank up the surround sound. If zombies never scared you before, you'll jump at the sound of one in this game. I think I changed my underpants 3 times during a single map.

Doom 3 was pretty damn scary. Even though you know that as soon as you walk into the room the lights will go out and even though you know the zobies aren't real and even though you know that the whole thing isn't real - it sill makes me jump.

doom 3 had me not wanting to walk into rooms, in case i found out what was in them. The opening part, when everything goes wrong, and you can hear everyone screaming and turning into zombies around you from your ear piece was brilliantly done.

but then i got used to all the enemys and frustrated by the (partly) crappy sound effects

Res Evil 4 has it's moments, not psychologically scary like Silent Hill, more ''There's a woman coming at me with a chainsaw and a dozen townsfolk with pitchforks behind me!''. It's guaranteed to make you jump when you find a snake in an ammo crate, bloody things jump right at you.

I just got Cthulu last week, haven't played much but I like it's style, now I'm intruiged as to what will happen at night!. I loved Silent Hill, even on the Playstation it was atmospheric as hell, especially the school and the hospital - Horror game fodder but at least there was some awesome and creepy puzzles to solve, and they actually needed a bit of thought too.

Fatal Frame 3 was scary, especially since the ghosts aren't too static anymore like in FF2. I got freaked out when a black ghost showed up in the girl's home (caught me off guard since it was supposed to be a "safe" zone).

I remember back when I was a child, I got scared during haunted house levels in Super Mario World... Creepy music...

@Exeat: Did you deliberately h4x the word filter, or are mods immune to that stuff?

Gotta be the original half-life, probably because I was very young when I first started playing it. My dad bought it around the date of release (which must have been 95/96, when i was 6 or 7) and I ended up playing it as much as he did (probably just as much as those cheesy Disney kids games). Headcrabs were the worst, they used to hide in the smallest gaps and then jump out at you when you least expect it.
I used to waste all my grenades by making sure the area ahead was clear of them, only to run in and find there were none and I was about to face hundreds of them in the next area.

I'll have to agree with that too. Also remembering that your first encounter with a headcrab involved you being weaponless! (the headcrab immediately after the disaster)

The scientist zombies were also pretty freaky too. Their general appearence was quite horrible, but it was the way they would slowly lumber toward you that freaked me out.

Also, in one room, there's a scientist with a headcrab on him, but the scientist is still alive, and squirming about in his chair. That was pretty horrible too

Thief 2's zombies were quite scary too. They would just appear from nowhere. They scared the sh*t out of me the first time I saw them (The level called the 'uninvited guest', with the mechanists tower also did this too)

Most of the resident evil series were really scary. RE4 wasn't as scary which was disappointing but it was still good.

During RE2, Mr X bursting through walls at random moments just when you think you are safe, then picking you up and breaking your back. Fun games! Shame they won't remake 2 and 3

The silent hill games are brilliant too, play them with the lights out for the maximum effect

Halflife 1 They Hunger expansion, wasn`t actualy scarey, just creepy detail, the bit where you wake up in the hospital, and then find the remains in the cradles in the nursery , I actualy managed to come up with a pretty good nightmare after playing that, one of those that wakes you up with a real jump and your hearts pounding type nightmares, only game that got to me, nowdays I`m like "oh! yawn! look at those giant maggots bursting outa that guy, grenade! <bam>" you get blas`e after too many games.

hmm, I wouldn`t get your hopes up TOO much, it was ok back when it was a current thing, nowdays it might not cut it, but "they hunger" was the longest of the adaptations afaik, went on for at least as long as Halflife and the levels where pretty well thought out, with some nice twists too, worth playing if you never played it before.

edit: not sure but I think the guy who created "they hunger" went on to work for Valve, "they hunger" comes in three sections, they all play end to end seamlessly, OH! and they are just about ready to release another "they hunger" game for HL2 called lost souls, should be good looking at the screenshots.

F.E.A.R. was the scariest game ive played, and that was only the demo. That little girl just creeped me out and I had the volume up way high at the part where you are walking down the corridor and the demon thing appears in the door, i jumped like 3 feet off my chair lol. Quite a fun game tho, especially pinning people to the wall with that nail gun.

System Shock 2. The tension was unbearable, and they kept me feeling very vulnerable. I downloaded the multiplayer patch for it, and got utterly terrified out of my wits by movement around the corner, until I realised it was the person I was playing LAN co-op with! Doh.

mario kart 64, without a doubt, nothing is more scary than having a red turtle shell creep up from behind you and then....**BLAM**....you flip up into the air and miracously land on the wheels of your seemingly undamaged go-kart....that my friends, is as scary as it gets

I guess I can't say my HL2 mod, because I always know what's going to happen next... F.E.A.R. then. That game was scary. In the elevator bit, my entire family just stared while I was screaming in front of the PC.

got a few replys...

im amazed to see how many of you found hl1 scary! wow

for me, the only real scary game is the silent hill series, thats the only game that can get me to put the controller down coz im to creeped to go further... for 20 minutes

all the rest like doom and resident evil are just jumpy, you walk round calm, summit jumps out, a split second of "fear" then its kill it and move on, not the same.

Anyone play the Colonel's Bequest? That was a creepy game, with the old mansion at night and people getting murdered.

I stayed home sick from school one day and finished the whole game--- so fun

HL2 was freaky too with Ravenholm. And in HL2 the first time you destroy some crates and one of those super-fast spider thingies run at you. I jumped in my chair and made a bee-line for the door (in the game, that is)

Same, it reminded me a lot of 1984 with the setting.

There one game I am so scared of I haven't played it, it just scares me sitting on the shelf in GAME, its the crazy frog racer...

Seriously though, Resident Evil Zero gets pretty intense when you have those slimy guys with longs arms and claws cornering you, trying to shoot the bugger with the guy and the girl can't use a shotgun to save her life (Quite literally) I can't really Pic the most scary resi evil or Dino Crisis (Dino Crisis 2 was cool, I died over and over in that game)

However, I'd prolly go for the demo of Half Life 2 at the moment, I loved the anti gravity gun when I ran out of ammo, but it couldn't save me from those 'things'

hmmm... just had another major brain fart.

I wonder if you could generate realistic fear using nothing but text? Like one of those old text based adventure games, er, "zork-likes." Or perhaps an ascii-based rougelike game. Do'ya think you could draw the player into the game experience so deeply that they would actually feel fear as a response to nothing but little letters on the screen?

In a sense, that's what all horror games are about - generating fear based on little colored patterns of light and sound/music effects. But I wonder if you could distill it down to nothing but.. text on the screen Would be an interesting concept to work with.

@the resurected anarchist: don`t forget that at the time HL1 was state of the art and as good as it got, that it was one of the most realistic games on the market at the time and that helped with the immersion, ten/twenty years from now you will be laughing about anyone being scared by the current slew of games as you jack yourself into your total sensory input games rig and actualy smell and feel everything that happens to you, not just see it on a tft screen.

@Hawkeye: that would be a text adventure, nearest thing to an interactive book, some of them could catch you off guard and where quite good at setting the mood, classic dungeon (Zork) was the first one, but the later ones got pretty good when they started to use professional authors for the plots, try the later infocom adventures and see how they grab you, most of them where released for free online since the market for them evaporated.

Halflife1 and Doom3 both managed to make me jump on a good few occasions...Halflife normally due to the head crabs but doom3 really could be freaky in some places.
Fear was such an amazing dissapointment as it seemed the team hadnt heard of suspence when the released the first playable demo. Put me off the game completly.

Scariest game moment was probably the dream scene in Maxpayne 1...had to turn the volume down after a while because those baby screams are damn freaky. The dream in MP2 wernt scary atall unfortunately.

I'd go for something like ATI radeon 9550 or better, they should be able to handle the graphics good enough, however, I'd check your RAM as well, FEAR and Doom 3 need 512mb ram, which is why I never downloaded the demos...

My brother has a fairly monster PC - and FEAR jerks like hell, he has plenty spec, it's just jerky for no good reason. Shame, because it ruins what is a really cool game.

I think that Doom3 can run on some lowly 5200's - I actually played through it on a 1.4 Athlon with a FX5200, low detail etc but it's definately got less performance demands. The best Doom3 experience is co-op with 2 xboxes linked, however impractical it's damn fun to take them on as a team, really changes the pace of the game into something more resembling the original Doom.

If he has an ATI card then a lot of problems with FEAR can be sorted with a driver update.
