Hi guys, I'm sure there's alot of old Atart ST users on the forum, who remembers STOS the game creator?

Anyway we all have favorate games from that era, perhaps it was double dragon, blood money, bubble bobble (thou there's about 100 remakes of that), or even Thunder Wing. What was your favorate Atari ST game? And which would you most like to see recreated in DarkBASIC?

Indeed. Class program.

Hmmm. Which Atari ST game?... Not sure on that one. How about Ranarama? I loved that game, and it was the first I got on the ST.

What's not to love Flappy?

Blood Money

Ranarama

Double Dragon 3

Elite 2: Frontier

Graphics to suit every occasion, lol.

Um, unless "graphics to suit every occasion" means to make a 100% faithful conversion of "White squares with red crosses attack" then nope. Erm...

Oh, and blood money was tops, double dragon games I always liked (loved Renegade on the speccy), and elite 2 was the follow up to the best game of all time TM so was always going to be a let down in my books.

I always found (and how can I put this politely?) that ST games to be low-res - the STE was somewhat better, but came way too late.

Ok here are my votes, with links to my web site for pics and stuff:

Interphase
A superb 3D hacking/cyberpunk sort of game, that would be awesome on a modern PC. A lot of work though

E-Motion
Classic puzzler, could work wonders with some physics in it.

Resolution 101
One of my all-time favourites. 3D drug busting in the future.

Nitro
Absolutely classic racer. Much better than Supercars imho.

Ok, that should get you started. If you need any of the games as downloads just shout. I've got 32 GB of Atari ST stuff on my hard drive

Cheers,

Rich

Made no difference to the ST in resolution though. STE was exactly the same res options as the STF/M. Just had 4096 colours instead of 512. Not that 512 ever stopped most artists from pushing the limits mind you. There are some much nicer STE only games though, mostly thanks to the Blitter and DMA sound (finally). The STE was indeed too late, but by the late 90s Atari wasn't the only ship sinking. Alas poor Amiga, you too died a horrible death at the hands of an inept company. Typical really.

Still, you can thank STOS for DarkBASIC - if Rick hadn't worked on STOS, there would have been no DarkBASIC.

I have to admit I had a suspicon that STOS might have played some small role, I can't remember another BASIC language dedicated to game making, though I'm sure there is somewhere.

And yeah, if you could e-mail those games to dcforeman80@aol.com it will save me some time hunting them down. I've got my old atari setup, and a lovely disk writing application for my PC.

It's really quite hard to beleive how far PC graphics have advanced in just 15-20 years, but at least back then high end game making was within the reach of a truely dedicated programmer.

Yeah, a decade before, when they knew what they were doing and actually cared about customers Both the ST and Amiga could be alive today (outside of their fan scenes) if it weren't for the parent company idiocies

They just sat back and neglected the market.

Atari still exists today, they produced the dungons and dragons MMO, the transformers game, and Unreal tournament 2004 upwards. I don't know if someone else just bought the old brand name or something, but it is still operating.

That isn't Atari Corporation. It's just a brand name owned by Infogrames. Before then it was owned by Hasbro. Before that JTS Corp.

It's not even remotely close to Atari as a corporation (and given its trading history this year I wonder how long before it is sold on again!)

It's what comes of pushing out too many machines (plus they did the ill-conceived 64GS followed by the even more ill-conceived A600).

I was a huge commodore fan (SID Chips Rule) their problem was the whole "word of mouth" campaign. they did no advertising. hell i remember seeing Bill Cosby pushing the TI-99 4a but almost no ads ever for the C64/128 and the Amiga(what a great machine) got no push from them.

For the C64? Well, their 'word of mouth' must have worked very well indeed then, it's the single biggest selling computer ever.

Agreed and over 15,000 titles for it (something that I am sure helped drive their sales. and vice versa more sales more titles.) It was a great machine that anyone could use. I have a collection of alot of old comp mags (i did alot of programming during the vic20-amiga days) like Byte and others, if you have access to mags from this era take a look through them there are alot of articles about the c64 but virtually no actual ads, an I almost never saw a TV commercial. We had a 80+ member Commodore club that met weekly and alot of us were upset as they declined because they failed to promote their product.

I wouldn't say it failed the C64/128 was very popular its just that Commodore moved forward to the amiga and assumed that so many people bought the 64 that they would just buy this. However alot of people were like "what the hell is an Amiga? I have a Commodore.". I guess when I talk about the lack of advertising I refer to later in Commodore's time.

The problem was that the A600 and CD32 failed - it also didn't help with the 64GS (as I mentioned before). Aside from that, Commodore didn't really plan for future technology.

Quote: "No wonder it failed."

It certainly didn't fail - the Dragon/Tandy 32 failed; the MSX failed; and quite a few others failed.

Only in the UK. It was massive in Japan, and other areas of Europe. Shame really, it was an incredible set of machines (I used to own the Toshiba HX10 version). The cartridge port was a sublime idea, with instant booting Konami classics, or the tape/disk loader for the cheapo Mastertronic affairs! It spawned massively big hits.. it's where Bomberman started (see my avatar, THAT is the original Bomberman!), it's where Metal Gear Solid started, Gradius, etc.

Ahhh.. nostalgia overdrive! What a wonderful little box.

Shatner advertised the Vic-20 not the C64.

I'd like to see Starglider & Starglider2 & Gridiron redone.

I consider STOS & AMOS the proud parents of DarkBASIC.

Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters

Kinda average gameplay, but the intro and music ROOOOCKED! Not sure what it was like on the ST, but it was pretty cool on the Amiga.

I've tried before, and I may try again to do a full remake of Speedball 2. I'm much more experienced now, I've got a much better codebase and DarkAI could come in handy. hmm... add it to the list.

Another World
I remember the visuals being so fluid and groundbreaking at the time. It was very difficult and required pixel perfect leaping over nasty creatures, but it was great.

Edit: Just found out that a high res special XP shareware version was release on 14th April 2006 for modern PCs!

It was on the Amiga, RISC OS and partically every console or computer - there was even a C64 version (or rather a demo of it). Much like that revolting game Lemmings - there was a C64 version of that too.

Anyhoo - not ST specific, but I would like to see a remake of Afterburner & Thunderblade.

Damn there's tons of classic games I'd like to see converted, Oids is something I still play quite a lot, but really a 3D version would kill it, I think with a 2D physics engine it could be great. That's the thing, keeping the gameplay the same is impossible with a 3rd dimension, but 3D technology can do wonders in a 2D game.

I remember Interphase, it would lure you in with this amazing drum sample that you kept thinking was gonna go onto a great intro tune, but it doesn't - one of those trippy games on the ST, like Archaepolothingy. I remember being really impressed by Resolution101, kinda makes me wonder what it would have been like with standard PC shooter controls, the ST was capable of that, it's a shame nobody thought of it.

Captive in a 3D environment, but still keeping the block system and movement would be cool, Cappo was a lot like a futuristic Dungeon Master, except your characters were robots that you could upgrade, a limb at a time. It was a massive game, but grossly under-rated in it's time, even with the 1990's best RPG award it was still quite rare to find a player. Very tricky to get into, but nothing that we're not used to these days, like faux keyboard entry passwords and complex lock combinations that you had to guess most of the time.

The number of times I saw that bloody dribble-tooth-scratcy-leech animation ... aaaargh

Does anyone remember a game called "Corporation"? It was a 3D RPG on the Amiga (possibly ST), and all I can remember was that you could send your character to sleep (with a nice starry effect) and you'd get woken up because you were under attack by green things.

I'm desperately trying to remember more, but google doesn't come up with the goods.

Carrier Command.

Bring back Carrier Command but update it to modern graphics standards. There are a few remakes underway - see remakes.org - and I'd love to see this game back again.

EDIT: Thanks to Rich Davey for the Another World tip. I loved that game on my Amiga. It had so many rich and unexpected features. Such as the bit with the tank in the arena. Or the bit where you crash landed into what I seem to remember was a pool full of alien women.

Remember that one that was posted a couple of years ago? Looked absolutely amazing, but turned out to be just a graphics demo and they were basically lying about making a proper game.

Oh and according to the Another World link it is just a demo. Personally thought the full high res colourful version was the original to begin with. Goes to show just how rubbishy the graphics used to be. And I remember seeing that opening Ferrari sequence and dropping my jaw basically thinking that this was the future of gaming That and the similar sequence on another game with some spacecraft in space. And then later I played Doom and forgot all about it (that and Alone in the Dark)

Cheers
