No, it's not another music thread...

We've had rain (off but mostly on) for at least two weeks now. But I didn't think much of it... it's just rain, it's not like you can drown in it. But last night, two dams here in Binghamton, New York broke open and 15,000 people have been evacuated from certain areas of the city and the surrounding suburbs. They installed sand dunes near a hospital only a few blocks from my house because it's only thirty feet above the river, and all of the lower parking lots for the hospital are... well... gone. And there's another dam just three blocks away from my house that they're saying could snap and flash flood my neighborhood... but they didn't evacuate us! If they do, I'm not worried about it. If it got really bad we could just go to Brooklyn, it's only an hour away and we have plenty of family there. But this is nuts! We live in New York... not Mississippi. We're not supposed to get floods here. It happened before, in 1936 or 1938 when NYC was hit by a hurricane, but I never thought I'd see it in my lifetime. Are any of you from Floody areas? Anything I should know about/ be prepared for? Again, I'm not too worried about it, but in the event that something bad should happen, what do I need to know?

Water'll soak up through the walls and make everything wet.

At any rate... They must be pretty dodgy dams if they're just busting open... What happened to the pressure release flows?

Good luck, and make sure to keep your computer unplugged at night, so if it happens, it doesn't get buggered from a power surge or something like that from short circuting

(A wet PCB can dry... A short-circuited one needs replacing!)

Wow, it's exactly opposite over in this part of the country. We have wildfires burning all over the place. On Sunday, the whole sky was overcast, but it was with smoke. I wish I would've taken a picture.

Good performance is better than a good excuse.

the drums for that song were recorded in a stairwell, mic'd near the kit, and ambience mics one floor up and one floor down

C'mon, I instantly knew what CR was talking about. That's pretty cool. I mean the drums in the stairwell thing, not the dams breaking.

The valley gets flash floods in monsoon season, but they mostly occur in the middle of the desert. Most of the victims are campers who don't watch the weather channel. If it were me and the situation got bad I'd leave for a bit so I could drive out to a neighborhood on high ground.

We NEVER get floods like this in New York. I mean never. I walked down the street to see what the river was like and it's overtaken several bridges. There's a street next to the river that leads off of riverside drive, just a few blocks from my house, that used to have three houses on it... there's 2 now. Keep an eye on CNN and they're showing images of Binghamton's wreckage on there and have been all day. Binghamton and Wilkes Barre PA are apparently getting the worst of it. If I suddenly vanish, it's because we've been evacuated, but they haven't made the evacuation mandatory here yet so I'm not going to flip out. If I see the river raise up another foot, that'll mean it's flowing through my neighborhood, and that's when I'll get the hell outta dodge

Zappo got it right, my reference was a reference to the Led Zeppelin song "When The Levee Breaks" on zep 4 (same album with Stairway, for the n00bs ) Listen to the drums as the song starts, it was recorded as I explained. The text symbology in the code box is the quick sheet music score of that songs drum beat.

dont make me get behind the kit and record it for you!

This sounds like what happened to us in New Hampshire (USA) a few weeks ago. I live on a hill, the biggest hill in the whole town. However our basement flooded and we got over 5 feet of water in there. Not to mention we had a small river running through our back yard. There were hundreds of roads taken out.

That's just half a mile away. We're still dry at my house, but we're completely surrounded by water and we can't get out of the city, so even when they tell us to evacuate there won't be anywhere for us to go

By the way, if you heard about Binghamton on CNN or MSNBC, they lied. CNN said 15,000 people have been evacuated, and MSNBC said that 383,000 have been evacuated... but in all reality only 2,000 people are in shelters. I guess that means that either a lot of people are still in their homes, or two of the news stations are lying

Wow, I sooo wish that could happen where I live. We get get 1-2 cenimeters of rain per year, if we're lucky. Wow though, that is pretty deep stuff. Anyhow, why is that water brown. I was afraid to ask that, but honestly, that is a pretty disgusting looking site. Again, I sooo wish that would happen here....

Flooding less that three blocks from my house! (you need to click "Video" next to "200,000 ordered to flee floods) The riverside park they show in the video is a place where my mom usually would walk to sit when she needed some time off from stuff... now completely under water. At this point, I'm starting to get kinda worried, and I'm usually not a worry-wort.

Quote: "why is that water brown. I was afraid to ask that, but honestly, that is a pretty disgusting looking site."

Mostly dirt and sand and mud picked up from the ground I'd imagine. The river is usually really clean-looking. Then again, this is new york and everything's pretty poluted, so I might be wrong. I definitely won't be sticking my hand into it to find out, lol (although I could, I wouldn't need to go far obviously).

I wouldn't brag about how your house is almost on TV, there are plenty of weirdos besides me that surf the net. I would edit that post. Anyway, I know its brown from dirt and stuff, I was trying to be a jerk. Anyway, nice scenery. I personnally would get wood together and build a makeshift boat and sail around. Hey, if I was there, I honestly would. But I'm not. I'm in California.

Seriously, I didn't give away enough information for even John Doe in all of his infinite wisdom to find my house. Besides, they couldn't get here anyway unless they owned a boat, lol. The video I gave before was wrong but I fixed it... that park (looks more like a sea now lol) is about two blocks from where I live (note how I didn't say my address there's a good 2,000 buildings in this area alone)

There, I notified the text adventure contest, so you guys can stop with the e-mails about my lack of responsibility, lol (three since I started this thread!). Sorry, but when a zillion gallons of water breaks out of the river and floods your city just a few short blocks from your house, you're a little too excited/ nervous to be thinking about text adventure competitions, lol.

I can't get in touch with some of my friends who live downtown... not cool. From what I understand, something crazy like 50k buildings in the downtown and east side areas are completely ruined. Governor Pataki said not too long ago that he wants even more national guard troops to get stationed in Binghamton and Hillary Clinton said something about it, too (not that I could care less because again, she's not my senator as far as I'm concerned)

So should I try to help people out or would I just get in the way? Where do I even go to offer help and what could I do? I'm kinda new to the natural disaster thing lol. This is the first flood I've ever seen and for me, it hasn't really set in yet just how bad the damage has been so far. On the local news they said practically no one left their houses and now they're trapped inside... IDIOTS.

Sorry to hear about the flood, Matt. Thankfully we don't have to worry much about that here--- we have other disasters like lightning and landslides to keep us up at night

I seriously don't know how you deal with that. I have to stay up all night and check the water levels every hour on the hour to be sure it isn't too high so we aren't caught off guard

Quote: "It must be pretty hectic there!"

Very. I'm pretty much freaking out, and I seem to be the calmest person in my neighborhood. There's no real exit strategy, either... we're literally on a little island right now surrounded by water, with maybe 10 blocks to go to the north and 6 blocks to go to the west, and to the east, 2 blocks (edit: the river is south 2 blocks, but it's supposed to be south 4 blocks!)... totally confined here. Why they haven't evacuated us I'll never understand, but I guess they don't think the water will hit us (of course, these are the same geniuses who said we wouldn't get flooded in the first place lol). So everyone is running around like crazy people and almost every house in my neighborhood has someone outside, right now at 1:43am, checking the water levels because it hasn't "crested" yet (a new word for my vocabulary lol)

Quote: "Ohh by the way Matt Rock your site doesn't work!"

Unless you're in the mood to read my rants about politics and pop culture, it isn't worth visiting And it's not a very well-designed site, either... I don't care about it enought to put any effort into it lol

The worst part of it all is that the hospital nearby (the one that was recieving my game developer magazines) has been completely flooded out (instant karma baby) and they had to evacuate 3,000 patients or something rediculous like that in a matter of a few hours. And they're saying now that the Conklin Ave. and Washington Street bridges might both break down and wash away, and the debris from those (big hunkin' chunks of iron and steel and stuff) could break the temporary emergency dams they set up to protect us... that would pretty much send a gush of 4-6 feet of water directly into my living room. It's a good thing we have a second floor and an attic!

Have you made sure you have enough supplies?
I mean, I know it sounds a bit survivalist (and thus, borderline insane) but if your house is in real danger of getting soaked, have you made sure that any food you have is safe against the water, and that if your electricity went down, you'd still be able to eat? Have you filled bottles with clean water for drinking if the pipes burst or your reservoirs get polluted? Do you have enough food to keep yourself calm and happy, and maybe enough to help out a neighbour or two? Have you ensured that anything from your house that you really must keep safe, is waterproof? (Passports, birth certificates, insurance documents - or family photos, if that's important to you, etc.) If you have a mobile phone, are you keeping it perfectly topped up with charge, and if possible, do you have a spare charged battery? Stashing clean warm clothes in watertight bags would also be a plan - as well as blankets and any waterproofs you might have.
Finally, ensure that your first aid kit is sorted - especially things like bandages (if something sharp under the water catches your leg), antiseptics (standing water, not good), sunblock and anti-diarhea tablets. Stash some chocolate too.

Personally, if there was a flood where I am right now - I'd not be prepared. But if you've still got the opportunity to get some of these things sorted, it may soothe some of your worries - hopefully you wont need any of it anyway.

Excellent points Tinkergirl. In fact, if you have any kind of camping equipment (stove, gas, sleeping bags etc.) it would be worth getting it ready and to hand.

Yeah, we have some floods here in Minnesota, but haven't had anything that bad for a while, at least not where I live. Our main problems are winter storms and tornadoes...those are a joy...

YAY!

The water crested in the middle of the night and I've had four hours of sleep As long as it doesn't start raining again (unfortunately they're predicting heavy rainfall here for the next four-six days, starting tonight ) we'll be okay.

Thankfully Tinkergirl, I went and gathered up the food that wouldn't rot and put it in the attic, and we always have tons of water, gatorade, and cans of coca cola in the house in the summer time. And for whatever reason something about your post made me think about our life vests that we have in the attic from vacations in the Finger Lakes eons ago, and although they're too small to fit most adults (except my girlfriend) because they're made for kids, at least they float and in a pinch I'm sure we could use those. You also informed me that we should get the documents prepared (we tossed everything we could find that was important and put them in ziplock bags... should be safe). So thanks for jarring my brain tinkergirl Unfortunately we don't have much of a first-aid kit. I put band-aids, aspirin, half of a tube of neosporin, a swiss army knife, some DayQuil, and three pillow sheets in there (which I could cut up to use as bandages I think)... it's the suckiest first aid kit in the history of the known world, but hey, it's the best we can do, especially since we can't get to any stores right now (that picture I posted above was given to me by my friend Jaime over myspace... and the stores are on the other side of all that water, lol). And thanks to all of my extensive medical training (in the game America's Army ) I *think* I can make a splint and stuff if I really, really need to. See? And people say you can't learn anything from playing video games

Quote: "Careful that you don't get stuck in there if the place gets washed away"

I was thinking about that, and the plan for right now is that if it floods up to that point we're going to just take our chances in the water, although everyone says that isn't safe because septic lines may have broken and stuff. But hey, that's what showers are for hehe

Quote: "Does the US government still think global warming doesn't exist? "

If the "jury's still out" on global warming in the US government's opinion, maybe they should come to Binghamton. We haven't had a flood this bad since the 1930's, and that one only happened because of "human error" according to CNN, although I don't know what they mean by that. Anyway, we're not in the south or the midwest where they get floods all of the time... we're not even far enough north to be next to a finger lake... we're an hour outside of NYC and we shouldn't be getting a flood, especially now, near the end of June. I think Mythbusters would call this one "confirmed."

Hey now, that's a good 14 blocks from my house And don't you live in Queens? That's like one big pron shop I honestly have never gone into the place... everything east of Chenango Street in Binghamton is one big ghetto What is a "comfortable viewing area" anyway? They let you watch pron in those places? I have a girlfriend... I don't need their facilities lol

Okay, some more pictures of the flooding for the morbid amongst us, or for those of you just wondering how bad it really was

Remember before when I said that an entire house has been pulled away? It used to be just a little bit passed that blue house in this picture, just a few blocks from my house. The house that used to be there is now completely gone.

I used to play soccer (football to you ukers) on this field... well, at least what used to be a field...

Aerial view of what used to be I-81, one of the most vital highways in New York state, which is now completely rendered useless until after the floods and the repairs it'll need following that.

Too bad airbags don't double as floatation devices.

"Hey honey, let's buy a house at River's Edge, it's close to the river and it's such a beautiful neighborhood!" Yeah, that's literally a block away from me as well

Never thought we'd see one of these in my city, not since the days and weeks following 9/11 anyway

Who says you can't have a little fun? Don't let the massive crippling floods stop you from enjoying your vacation

Wal-Mart, Dicks Sporting goods, and that whole plaza is under water right now. I'll bet god was aiming for Wal-Mart

I guess this means "all flights are cancelled" from the Binghamton Link Airport, huh?

edit: At least 3 other runways at that airport are completely submerged. Just thought that might be noteworthy

That's why I New York But seriously, they're all over the place here... there's like 20 in this city, that's the closest one. It's where rich people go for their "entertainment" lol

Quote: "Oh, and start taking backups of all your data, if your HDD gets waterdamage, it's screwed, but DVDs will be fine "

I'm a step ahead of you I backed up everything on DVD, everything except my MP3's and a few of my older game projects that I don't mind scrapping anyway. I used up my whole spindle of DVD-R's, like 50 discs but better safe than sorry. I have them all sealed up in ziplocks, then in this floating waterproof plastic jug thing I got a few years ago from some infomercial store, and they're tucked away safely in the attic I didn't even think of doing that until Tinkergirl said all that safety-first stuff... it's all backed up now

They're saying 40,000 homes have been damaged and not counting the residential and commercial stuff (only counting city property) the damage toll is up to $100 million. I think they're adding in Met's stadium and all the parks and stuff to that figure... what could a city with less than a million residents spend that much money on? Unless it's like all of the pipes and the dams that broke and the bridge that's about to collapse, then I guess it sorta makes sense.

My guitar that I ordered is shipping from NJ, and is delayed, due to the flooding...

Well, it sounds like you're pretty well prepared!

If I was you, I'd be either weeping in the corner, or running around like a chook with its head cut off

Damn, I'm going to New York in a week. Is Rochester anywhere near the damage?

Glad to see you've got your precautions taken care of. Since it "crested" though, will the water hopefully decide to give you your neighborhood back soon? Take luck (Regan, rofl).

Yeah Matt, I'm just down the road from you in Norwich, and it's pretty bad. Nice pictures.

However, you wouldn't know it from my house, since I'm on a hill far above the river. Just a small puddle in the basement, and if it weren't for the news and the fact that I had to CANCEL a trip to the Jersey shore for some fun on the beach, it wouldn't have affected my life particularly.

Just get to watch it on the news and can't go nowhere.

They made it a crime to drive for the past 2 days, for non-emergency reasons.

Houses on hills are the best.

I wonder what the local Walmart looks like now. They were supposed to have their super Walmart 'grand opening' Wednesday. Oops.

I should've gone down Tuesday. Now I have to find out when 17 reopens entirely, and the rest of the highways. Don't want to wind up like a local man, or the two truckers who were all killed because pieces of road caved in.

Has america stolen a load of british named places? Norwich, Rochester... I'm pretty sure they existed in the UK first!

Hows the rain? Is it cresting again?

dude, omg. stfu already with that! You live nowhere near NY (the "NY" you keep implying) You live in the woods, the country, the hills! You might as well live in the midwest - thats how far off where you are is, compared to NY (nyc)

stop it already!

Did you know there's a town in the US called Scotland? And after all - they're talking about New York - you know, the new version of that little castle-town in England where it's still legal to shoot a Scotsman on a Sunday with a longbow, or something.
That, and Birmingham, Alabama is quite different to Birmingham, West Midlands. Annoying when you're doing a google search for something and Alabama keeps popping up.
