I love the style of Dumbo and Cool. The graphics really didn't matter to me I played through them both.

Not to blow my own hooterschnitzel, but seriously the graphics are fairly decent to be fair. The controls sucked though, I will admit.

I now have a nice action plan for both games and Milk Paton which takes into account all advice here. Thankyou all!

Drewsgames.com

> Will finish off Go-Karting game
> Developing a 2D game
> Also have something in store for D&C

MilkPaton.com

> Milk Paton is coming back in a 10 part weekly mini series which should not only be snappier, but provide more of a hook!
> I am looking into distributing DVD into comic book stores and other geeky outlets

I guess it's just about improving what I've got a bit.

Do you think I should go for it? I could knock something up I think.

Maybe like a wee 2D game when I have a bit of time. I'm just so busy and confused about what I should be doing with time / next. Anyone know any good ways to relax?

Yah man, do a Milk Paton platformer on a 2D axis--- maybe use the Fizz 2D physics library. That would be pretty sweet. Then you can put your original catchphrases in there and cameos from the other actors.

I would play it if it were well done.

despite saying you only have time for 1, i think you should do both, they are both things you enjoy, and multi-tasking is something that will help enormously in the future.

i do it, web development, 3d modeling, texturing, video editing, animation etc. it doesn't hurt to try more than one thing and stick with them all. It also doesn't pull the belief of "effort" away, nobody should expect something better because you have put more time over it, and there is certainly no rush to get 1 thing done.

diverse yourself.

i actually found Milk Paton amusing

Keep up with games i would say Drew but i wouldn't go into a milk paton game. What would be the plot? What the heck would you do in it? Even if you got nice graphics in, it would take a lot of talent to make the game fun.

That's the main thing though; I have a good social life and sitting inside all day working on Milk Paton AND games dev is not my idea of being alive, hence only time for one really.

I will be working as a labourer over winter in any case which means I REALLY do not have the time for both at a level I'd be happy with.

As outlined above, I do have a plan in place now.

Has to be said, there's not that many shareware games making money these days. Personally I think your onto a good thing with D&C, and expanding on that a bit is your best option. There's a lot you could do, hell rip ideas off Nintendo with it's sandbox style games. D&C should appeal to kids, and kids love to sandbox, own pets, have a little house, insult NPC's. Maybe adding a more freeroam town with an Animal Crossing feel, then have the levels branch off as missions from that. Letting players buy useless items and fish would broaden it's appeal - perhaps abilities like skating and swimming could be skills that need to be practiced (like a swimming pool and skating park in the freeroam town), as well as adding more abilities. Skates and snorkels could be upgradable items. The money the player collects during a level could be spent on items and furniture for their house, I mean you could really go to town with the secret items and mini-games, and that's what keeps people playing, wanting to buy the full game more.

You have to consider what parents are willing to spend on a game, I mean they go to stores like GAME and look for games at about £10, you know those budget games parents seem to be drawn to. Publishing through them might be the best commercial angle, because those games largely suck, D&C would stand out in amongst that lot. Also consider the multiplayer aspect, seriously, when parents and grandparents look for games, they're looking for something that siblings can play together, no fighting, happy families etc.

There's actually a lack of this sort of game, apart from the Sims series, 2-player single PC games are rare enough, but having one that offers that style of sandbox gaming as well would appeal to more people. Online gaming never really took off with DBPro, but maybe it would be possible to host your town, then have people join it, having only 3 or 4 players running around like in Animal Crossing is still a lot of fun. I imagine there's a few youngsters in your family that wouldn't mind playtesting, they can be very honest when it comes to this stuff, I should probably listen to my son more!. You know you can email me anytime if you want to discuss ideas and how to impliment them.

Make another game man, fo' sho'! I think the problem with Dumbo and Cool was just it's formula. It was polished, and professional. It did lack the sparkle of high end graphics and models, but obviously it was a 3D platformer, so it got away with it. I think it was a decent game but I don't think the formula was right.

If you're going for a kids platformer, you need to make the characters really stand out. Dumbo and Cool were a bit simple in hind sight. They perhaps weren't jazzed up enough and marketable, like a giant squishy banana, or bright green bunny etc. I think people need to see a screeny and instantly take a liking to the characters and want to find out what they're like.

I think D&C showed off your commitment, and ability. I think you just need to harness it into a new, better constructed and more marketable formula.

Edit: On the subject of Milk Paton, I'm with cash. Great idea, good quirks and novelties to it. Some great jokes, but they're a little thin in places. This is MPs main problem. The formula here, in my opinion is great, but there aren't enough jokes per minute. To make MP really successful, I'd suggest taking more time over each episode to give yourself more time to come up with more jokes and work them into the story. MP has some awesome moments, and some dull moments tying them together. Reduce the dull moments by just giving yourself more time to come up with more material, and I also think MP could be a cult success.

It would be cool if you did a Milk Paton game in the style of Dizzy but your health could be related to how much milk is inside you which you would obviously need to keep topped up.

D&C and Milk Paton are both excellent. D&C however needed more levels, and better graphics to make it saleable. It was awesome when I saw cutscenes, I was like, wow, he really went all out on this. I was proud to see a fully working game like that in DBP. But it lacks shine, the gameplay is good although the controls as mentioned above are a little iffy. It really needs the polish of graphics to get it going. Also some of the things VanB suggested. That would be totally great. Kids would love this game, believe me. Heck I liked the game and I'm an adult. It was fun, the voice acting was good, quirky characters, and a nice cartoon atmosphere. It just needs a bit more scope and graphics and it would be in great shape I think.
