Natflash - thats fair enough, but a little black and white... Should she not understand that coding is not just sitting in a room typing... Its Creative, Challenging and (most importantly) the hobby of the boyfriend.
Any relationship where the partner cannot understand that the coder is not ignoring them, they're just enjoying their hobby, is never going to last. One of two things will happen...
1) The partner will feel resented and will either be eternally miserable or will breakup the relationship
2) The coder will give in and "go out" when they might sometimes rather be doing their hobby. This will make the coder resent the partner and will have a similar result to point 1.
Without understanding and flexibility, a relationship is impossible - and that goes for ANYONE, no just coders... people who enjoy kitting, car racing, coding, watching TV religiously, shopping or just mindlessly wandering around a park for hours on end could suffer the same fate if the partner either doesn't enjoy it themselves or doesn't "allow" the flexibility of "letting" them do it.
