Sounds like bad parenting to me. When a kid is only 12, the influences of the schools, city, and environment aren't too significant, IMO, because the kid isn't (or shouldnt be) very independant. Therefore, if the kid is a liability and trouble maker, than its only the family to blame. Calling the cops won't help. She needs to learn how to be a parent.

Ha Ha Merry CHristmas bucko. If I were the mother with these types of problems I would let him know the gift is now being donated to charity and he can have the empty box. I suppose the behavior problems could be the fact that she must have been only 15 when she had him so had not grown up herself.

Great grand mother of a 12 year old at that, so she was 51 when she became a great grandma. Looks like she could be a great-great grandma at 66 they way they are going.

I have to admit I was rolling my eyes all though that story right up until the end. Given the boy's inclination to disobaying rules the move was prob a good one. But there is obviously something seriously wrong going on there, I knew a number of familys growing up in the valleys that where like that, kids totally out of control, and it does need to be caught before it totally spirals out of control.

Aunt and uncle had a kid when they were 15, her kid had one when she was 15, so they were grandparents at 30. Not saying I condone it, but that kind of thing happens all the time

That kid sounds like my brother, who gets in trouble with the police, over and over, and doesnt learn. Hes also having a kid, with a 14 year old, which is really messed up.

I thought the whole thing was mad. I was orginally going to say "Americas police force was insane" until I read the bit about punching police, shoplifiting, etc... I have sort of changed my mind. But really arrestting a child for opening his Christmas present early...

"If you don't give it back I'll call the cops."

(the kid gives the present back)

"Ok I'm calling the cops."

You teach the kid that you are a lier.

It was a little ridiculous up till they talked about his past problems. Still a bit overboard.

Ok, I'm not a parent, and I'm sure I won't be for at least a few years from now... But is it really that hard to raise a kid? I can't even imagine having a kid who would turn out half as bad as that kid. It just seems like an easy task to raise a kid well. I've grown up with 4 siblings below me though, so I guess that is part of the reason I think that way. I'm sure every parent thinks the same thing though until they come to the hurdle of actually having a kid. I dunno...

lol I was just coming onto TGC to report this exact same story, but with CNN as the source. It's nutty imo. Seems like a fairly drastic measure... any good parent should have just taken the kid's presents away, or at least that's what my parents would have done in this situation.

That is rather a bad example, if conditioning works, then his mother should learn a thing or two about it, if he does what she wants him to do then you don't punish him for doing it...it doesn't make any logical sense. The mother part to blame, she should have taught him better, so it didn't come to the extent of her having to call the police just to teach him a lesson, as he should already know the lesson.

I think she's totally to blame because she raised him in that way. If a child gets told if they don't behave they'll get spanked... and he/she never gets spanked they know there's no penalty for misbehaving. The child will continue to push the limits with not just the parent but any adult. Spare the rod and you spoil the child.

Surely that kids problems had to come from bad parenting, though part of it may have not been her fault. for instance, i didn't see anything about a father being present. Nothing like your dad to knock some sense into you

In the US spanking will get social services called on you, it's generally frowned on, though I have no idea if it's technically illegal..

I know there's a drive on civilised countries towards a wholesome society where there's not room for corporal punishment. And it all will be good.

But as long as kids are totally arbitrary and unruly like my daughter is sometimes, I'm all for a good slap to bring things into perspective. That never did me any harm when I was growing up and I see no reason to change that now the shoe is on the other foot.

Does anyone else in the states remember that lady who beat the crap out of her kid in the parking lot of a store? It was on national news and whatnot... whatever happened to her? If she was arrested, it's illegal, if she had her kids taken away, it's just frowned upon . I think for it to be illegal though it has to qualify as (n)degree assault of a minor, or maybe child negligence or something like that.

Yeah Peter H is right. I didn't mean it like that. Spanking must be done when you're not angry too. Many people spank when their mad and that's when it can turn into abuse. You explain to the child what they did wrong then spank them.

I'm thinking this kid might have a neurological problem (ADD/H comes to mind...), anyways, this is clearly bad parenting.
If the mother is so concerned, why not taking the kid to a shrink?
I mean, why bother buying the toy if the kid is misbehaving in the first place?

First question (bit of a dumb arse one to be honest but...) is that Ninja site for real?

Second question, how can they make smacking illegal. If they did, kids would have nothing to fear, I am 14 myself, and if our teachers at school were allowed to cane the kids I bet we would learn a great deal more.
