All sounds in the game also must be .wav format. IF you want the music to loop for the whole period of the game, go to: File > Build Game > Level Settings > Global Script > Music and browse to your song.

btw i asked rich to change my name from Supah Gamer so dont mix!

If it is music, using .wav is a big nono.

use .ogg like Nickydude said.

make sure that it is also in 8bit mono and 22,200 Khz.

guys, was there really any point in bumping this?

.wav sucks, .ogg is way better, .mp3 is even better than that (I wish that we could use that).

Explain why .wav's are bad and why .ogg is better. I think it all depends on the sound your looking for.

When I write a death metal or heavy metal songs I prefer the analog 1.8 inch reel to reel over the new digital recording method.
When I write classical spanish, classical, modern rock or gothic rock I prefer the digital aspect because it allows me to add extra tone, reverb, track delays and more focused flanges, phases and chorus effects.

I know that this is a bit different, but it's still one in the same. with .wav you can get a very grainy old record store sound. and perhaps with .ogg you can get a crisper feel. Compression is another thing to look at but it depends on the song. If it's looped then I would not worry about it to much.

RF

Why can't you use mp3?
I haven't checked to see if an mp3 file would work but I don't see why it wouldn't.

Just so people know:-
1: .wav is the original source format uncompressed and will be the biggest in size.

2: ogg is a compressed format that try's to keep the original wav shape after taken unheard noise away and is used mostly by games due to the results are pretty good.

3: Mp3 another compressed format that also try's to keep the oprignal wav shape, this format is not as good qaultiy as ogg but good for normal music use.

actually the easiest way to put music in your game and save space if the music will be your level track of course is to use a small entity and set its fpi to repeat sound and set the sound as the song you want i found that out after fooling around with diffrent alternatives to the soundzone and exe which only lets you use one track for all levels use ogg to spare more memory and for faster game play also

I have never used ogg format, with the use of eq you trim the bandwith, the human hearing range only picks up 20-20k cycles, this deteriorates as you get older,16 bit digital uses this range. When you compress with mp3 it shaves off some of the top and bottom end,by reducing the bandwidth it reduces the file size,it is near to impossible to get a true analogue sound,no matter what anyone tells you about digital processing, many software plug-ins claim to do this but really only boost the bottom end.In the same way that a 12" single uses a fatter groove to improve sound quality, the only way to get a near analogue sound with digital is to use 24 0r 32 bit recording.
Wav format is ten times the file size of mp3 I believe ogg is even smaller.
I have read on these forums that it is not legal to use mp3 for your games,I am not aware of why this should be,maybe someone could point me in the direction of any info on this,as it does not appear to be any problem for musicians to use.

I think thats due to the fact that some people are afraid of others using .mp3 files from famous music bands (slipknot, AC DC, System of a down, etc..) or other artists that wrote their own music in their own games which would cause copyright infringement

Thats just my opinion though

I dont think thats the reason,if any,MonT.Whats to stop people converting mp3's to ogg,if someone uses a copyrighted piece of music it is recognisable whatever the format.I'm sure I read somewhere on the forums that it was to do with the mp3 player.I still haven't seen anything confirming this tho'.
I dont mean to be a pain keeping this thread going, but I would be interested in finding out why mp3 cant be used.I dont understand the 'player' aspect as anyone playing your game is using a legal player on their computer with all soundcards supporting the mp3 format

I think mp3 technology needs to be licensed through Fraunhofer IIS before it can be used for a purpose such as this, because it is patented technology. So unless you buy a license, yes it would be illegal.
http://www.iis.fraunhofer.de/fhg/iis/EN/bf/,amm/licensing/index.jsp

However, ogg is open-sourced (free), and is supposed to be an improvement over mp3 anyway. In fact, I think ogg was created as a response to the issues I just mentioned.
