No, not really BM. I know plenty of 'non-geeks' who play WoWCraft.

I'd play it if I weren't on crappy, crappy dial-up. I look back on my Quake 2 days with fond, fraggin' memories. Back when dial-up was still viable.

DDO is very viable with dial-up, they went way out of their way to make sure people who have dial-up could still play. I have played with alot of them and you don't notice much difference at all, people do get fair lag if they don't have 1gb ram though and that goes for cable or dial-up.

Hey hey hey... playing WOW is not "fun" it's "game research". It's real hard to research a game for 17 hours a day but we manage somehow. The stuff WOW teaches us today will greatly effect the future... at least that's what I tell myself.

How can a non-geek play WOW?

It's impossible, a contradiction in terms. It's like saying, I'm not a serial killer, but I have a fine collection of bodyparts in my freezer. Casual gaming does not usually involve a monthly direct debit.

I've never played it, because I'd most likely waste too much time on it .

I suppose in theory it is possible, I mean okay South Park doesn't count, as if a bunch of non-geeks can beat a nerd who has been a year and a half constantly playing it

I would play it, I wouldn't call myself a geek, but I am heading that way I suppose, at the moment I'm terrible as a geek. But I say there is nothing wrong with geeks or being geeks, its nerds that are trouble

I would too if freaking Windows XP would run it, I found my old copy the other day to only find XP (and what the hay, lets wind people up, Microsoft) hates classics...Luckily I picked up myself a copy of Doom 3 today, but it isn't the same.

Ive managed to resist that game, I know i would lose hours of work.
I will play it when I have a long block of time off after my larger projects are completed.
I lost years to WarcraftIII and DiabloII, I can only imagine how much I would lose to that game.

DiabloII:LOD - that was one of my weaknesses...

Others have included:
* HL:Counterstrike (1.6)
* Vietcong:Fist Alpha
* Transport Tycoon Deluxe (a problem again now as I've found a project called OpenTTD)

YES! Another TTD addict! There's a patch out that makes it run with Windows.

Haven't ever tried any online gaming really because I know I wouldn't have time for it, and it doesn't really appeal to me.

Good performance is better than a good excuse.

Personally I think WoW is an exercise in very very clever game design. I cannot really explain it, but there is something utterly captivating about the whole thing. It's just hard enough to be a challenge, while easy enough to keep on progressing, while rewarding enough to make you want to actually progress.

The first 30 or so levels for the newcomer are a real revelation. Game design beauty. Beyond that things start to get a bit more mundane (kill X to get Y, kill X until they drop X, take X to Y, etc) but by this stage you'll be on the battle grounds, probably in a guild, definitely into a profession or two (engineering, oh yeah!), and capable of roaming most of the lands without worrying about getting slammed instantly.

I love the graphical style. The attention to detail is insane, and the effects are just lovely. I'm not the only TGCer to WoW either - Ravey is a total hardcore WoW freak, as is Mike only less so (it was he who got me into it!). I don't have bags of free time (an 8 month old son and a busy job will do that to you), but I do love to just pop in and play for a few hours now and again. Mind you, the Wii is taking most of my gaming time up now Ahh.. Super Castlevania! Retro bliss.

Super Castlvania! The SNES one, right? I love the jazz inspired soundtrack in that game. I used to adore the Castlevania series, it just didn't make the transition to 3D very well, sadly.

I haven't played wow either, but I might have to see what all the fuss is about if I have time. Being an adult wreaks havock on my game playing time.

Hehe, I'm also a WoW player. I have a level 52 Frost mage I love the game. I love PVP, so of course I'm placed on a PVP server. It's starting to get really fun in the higher levels, as you will get access to some really awesome instances. I also enjoy the questing, but istancing is deffinately what I like the most.

There is just something about the game that makes you want to progress. Get in a higher level, and of course get some better gear. And the higher level you get, the more parts of the world you will get access too. Well, it's not like parts of the world is locked before you get to a certain level, but enter a lvl 50+ zone when you're level 10 might not be the best thing to do And I'm not sure how long you're going to survive. Hehe.

But there's just so many things to do in the game, and many directions you can go. It's awesome.

That is entirely possible: you could be like the bloke I saw on TV a few weeks ago, who collected road kill to eat! (and kept it in the fridge with all the 'normal' food)

Richard is quite correct that it is a genius piece of game design - the first 25 or so levels at least. They ensure that at no point is the player overwhelmed with new abilities, and they've always got multiple quests that they can choose to progress with. Follow the quests and you'll almost accidentally level with surprising speed - the level progression is also set so that just as you've got quite comfortable with your abilities, you'll be given a new 'toy' to play with.

The art style is actually a style, as opposed to just more gritty realism, but as a distinct style there are some people who are turned off by it.

However, I played it in the beta and didn't stick around - and just around November I had a go of the 1 month trial and got to about level 28 before getting quite bored of it and chose to cancel. The lower level stuff is as smooth as satin, but as soon as the grindfest raised its ugly head I was out of there quick-smart. I miss the old SWG rp.

i'd love to make a game called "Wow", that became really popular, and then confused everyone when people started talking about it.

this is in a similar vein to me wanting to start "that band" and have our first album called "that album"

I don't have a sig, live with it.

I would think the fact that he can program circles around a lot of people would say that before playing a funny little MMO.

Such a genius! It already works with HIM, 'I hate HIM', 'Who?' and so on, shame though it has to be them, I hate HIM...

I think you'll find most people hear are geeks, geeky or like geeky things, as we're programmers, come on got C++ for Dummies for Christmas, not David Beckham for Dummies (Although I do find him hard to understand ) There is no shame in it, not all geeks are scared of the light.

I REALLY cant stand any games of WoW's type, As I really hate MMORPG's in general. (For those of you who remember, yes my first n00b game attempt was an MMORPG, but my friends are to blame for that ). I like the idea of a massive world and playing with thousands of people, but I absolutely hate the mechanics all MMORPG games seem to share. I want a story to drive me on, not some stupid level-up system that I can brag about to my friends.

I could care less if I have the magic armor of power or super awesome cape of coolness if it means nothing more the more bragging to my geeky friends. Either the games gotta have story, or its got to have great game play, and from watching my friends slumped over the computer, I want no part in it. End Rant
