Hi all,

Here is Issue 48 of the TGC Newsletter.

December is usually a quite slow month, what with people taking holiday and the like (the cheek of it!) but there was still enough going on to fill-up another decent sized newsletter

Tutorials include Grants superb "48-hour Game" article, Steves cool XML in eXtends, Marks 3D Normal Mapping tutorial, and Lee's advice on Pacers. General news includes FPSC 1.04, Model Pack 6, a brand new Dark Shader video and more.

Oh and a little piece of news about me.

Cheers,

Rich

Ahh don't worry.. there will be no chance of everyone now running amok here I will still be working for TGC (freelance contract), only in a much reduced capacity due to my new job. But I'll still be an admin on the forum, and still working on the new forum code - heck, if anything it'll get done faster now!

Edit: I'm going to be the Senior Tech at Aardman's newly created Internet team. It's a very exciting, and very challenging role to say the least.

For those who skim read the newsletter, pay more attention to article 15

Lol. Rich, I have to agree, you chose a great place to go. We'll REALLY miss you not writing the newsletter anymore.
Best of luck,

With regards to submitting a game for the compo, this appeared in the newsletter:

So, which is it? Any compression or just .zip?

There is more than one program that compresses to the .zip format

(i would use winRar if i were you, it makes small .zips... smaller .rars, but we can't use those )

Congrats to you Rich - you've managed to work at one excellent British company, and move onto another Enjoy Aardman, and you've been an amazing admin so far (I know you're not 'leaving leaving' as such, but you get what I mean).

By the way, (no idea whether you'll know or not, but...) is Aardman composed of two (or three) buildings now? I knew they were on Gas Ferry Road or something previously, but they either moved or bought another building additionally - any ideas where you'll be? (and whether you'll be in close-enough proximity to Mr Park to actually see/meet him)? Or is the internet team at a completely different place from the main studio(s)?

</question_overload>

Seriously though, enjoy Aardman, and we'll miss your (regular) presence, sarcasm and occasionally humorous n00b-bashing

haha, I removed extends, downloaded it again reinstalled like 3 times wondering why the load xml command was not working, thought it was new

I suppose something similar can be done with excel files using the enhancements pack.

Well enhancements also supports plain csv files, you could rewrite the file with comma seperation and save it with the csv extension I would think. MIght have a go, I was going to move my data into csv before the turorail anyway now is a better excuse to do so.

They still have a very large presence on Gas Ferry road, but they have additional space at Aztec West, and in further sites in Bristol. Gas Ferry road is loads of smaller buildings / cabins, quite a maze there. But it is where the main CGI guys are, and the studios. Jump back 5 years, before I worked for TGC, and Aardman were the main client of the company I ran. We did plenty of work for them (built their entire intranet for example), so really this will be like going back to work for them, only in a different capacity (i.e. full-time staff, and a Senior Tech role). I'll be based mostly at home, but also at Gas Ferry Rd.

There is an amazing amount of work to be done - most of the sites are incredibly out of date, spread all over the place and running on disparate systems. As well as a mass of localisation issues, there is an entire rebuild to be done by the new team, not much more of which I can give away right now, sorry.

As mentioned here, and in the newsletter, I'll still be working for TGC though. So you don't get rid of me that easily To be honest with you, joining TGC was the worst thing that could ever happen to my game/demo coding days! I used to crank out stacks of things in DB, but somehow it's just all so /different/ when you actually work for the company who make it. It's hard to explain - I think sort of like those people who are avid gamers, who then work for a large games company, it can sort of take the 'shine' off of it a bit! I'm sure some of you will understand what I mean.

Cheers,

Rich

Congratulations Rich Don't let them work you too much, we do need you around here.

Nice tutorial Batvink, I'm a little interested in Styx now. The normal mapping tutorial looked fantastic, exactly what I need right now. And as always, I'll go over Grant's tutorial in detail once I get a chance.
