For those who haven't seen it, there has been a highly successful thread on the DB Pro board for a long time, where a coding challenge is set and people compete to write a program which meets the challenge criteria within the time limit set.

The person who sets the challenge judges the entries and the winner sets the next challenge and time limit.

The solutions to the challenges are very educational and all code submitted is open source so you can use it freely in your own programs.

But, has anyone wished they could take part, but only has DBC?

I propose that we start a DBC version of the DBPro Coding Challenge thread and show what we can do with DBC.

Remember, if you win a challenge, you can use the opportunity to set the next challenge to solve a programming problem you currently can't get around!

Please note though that the idea isn't to set challenges to write full programs (unless they are very simple) but rather small programs which demonstrate how to do something. (Check out the DBPro thread to get an idea of what I am talking about).

About the only important rule there is with the challenges is that they MUST be media-less. You cannot use any external files - everyone must be able to copy and paste your program straight into DBC and run it. That means no external models or graphics, though you can write code in your entry which generates media.

Anyone for up it?

Sounds like a cool idea. I don't usually participate in these, but I enjoy going back and looking at the thread to see what people have done. Good luck with this

I do, in fact, own two DBP keys. If Rich would permit it, I would be very happy to contribute one to the contest. Unless i'm mistaken? One can be used with a demo of dbp to unlock it as a full. I'll have to test that, or can anyone confirm it?

I think that's a good idea. I'm going to get DBPro in 2 weeks, but untill then, I wouldn't mind entering these contests.

Cocacola and Pepsi aren't that differnt. Deal with it.

Indi:

Thanks for that. We'll see if the response is good enough to make it worthwhile. If it is, we can start a new thread.

x1b:

It wouldn't be a contest as such - just an ongoing thread for DBC users. No prizes and no DBPro code - just DBC challenges.

I'm sure that the guys who do the Pro challenges wouldn't mind if we tried to redo in DBC one or two of the challenges they have done in Pro.

I'm sure there are a few newcomers to the DB community who would be surprised what DBC is capable of...

Gamedesign er20:

A lot of users (me included) have DBP as well as DBC and can have a go at the DBC challenges just for a bit of fun.

I have participated multiple times in the DBP forum...
I still have my DBC, and I think I might participate...

As far as I'm concerned, you can start the challenge after I download your editor

Lol - seeing that in the newsletter was a bit of a shock - especially as it's nowhere near finished yet. It's only a usable work in progress!

@Everyone

I think many DBP owners also have DBC and might participate for nostalgia reasons...

Note that you don't have to be an expert DB programmer to participate either - entries from newcomers are welcome and if your programming isn't so good you will find others taking part in the challenges will be happy to tell you how to improve it. You'll learn quicker this way...

So, if we get 6 or more people who think this is a good idea I'll start a new challenge thread.

It works, and it's easier than the default DBC editor...
The black background with white letters gave me more than one headache, and DarkEdit didn't seem to work for me... My choice is quickly made!

you have 1 vote "yes" from me.

however we don't have internet at home any more (reasons will remain unknown to you guys, nothing that i did anyway) so i won't be able to be much online and actually participate.

usually when i'm at work and not doing anything, like right now, or any other day at work. aww...

You don't have to be an expert to join in - the idea for newcomers participating is that the rest of us can help you get your code working and/or improve on it.

OK, you might not win a challenge with someone elses code, but at least you would have learnt something new in the process and if the actual idea is good you might get placed...

Anyway, I guess there's enough interest to start and maybe more will join in as we go along.

I'll get started on a few rules which we can all agree on before starting, along with something nice and easy for a challenge to kick off with.

Watch this space...

I'll participate, although at my current programming level I highly doubt I can actually do anything good. It is a good opportunity to learn something new. I would buy DBPro but unfortunatly, it requires the damn internet registration(excuse the language but it really annoys me) and I don't have the Internet anywhere at school. I wish TGC would remove that, then I would buy DBP.

Anyway, good suggestion for the coding challenge thread, and good luck to all participants!

New thread started complete with rules and the first challenge - which is a nice easy one to kick off with so everyone has no excuses for not entering.

Please read all the rules before starting to avoid any arguments later!

Also, please feel free to suggest anything in the rules I've missed.

Just in case anyone hasn't realized it, this thread is now a sticky at the top of the DarkBASIC board:

Enjoy your day.
