Hey,
Out of curiosity, what are your favorite movies and why?
Mine:
Lord of the Rings (all)
Brilliant in all aspects in my opinion. Cinematography, the actors, the lines, the story, the camera's, CGI, everything. Without a doubt the best series of movies ever, and possibly the best movies ever. Some complain that they are too long, but if you really like them, it shouldn't matter, that was the time that was needed, it's not like they tried to stretch it out . One of the few movies that gets better every time you watch it.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl
Funny, entertaining, and real (as in, not Disney). The first good and realistic (as real as you can get with skeleton pirates anyways ) pirate movie I've seen. Johnny Depp is awesome as Jack Sparrow, and usually hilarious. The story is good also. I just like the time period (hence the reason I'm making a game on it ), so that may have contributed to me liking this so much .

iRobot
Just an all-around cool movie. And interesting story, and it gets you thinking what is possible with AI. Good action shots, good actors, and some humour make it good. I think I like it so much because AI interests me a lot. It's a very good movie anyways, and well-made and cool special effects.

Any comments on mine? And what about yours?

Pretty much opposite of Gil's movies.

LOTR - Complete and utter waste of my time. Fell asleep several times through each--- and the scenes just seem to drag on and onnnnnn.

Pirates of Caribbean - No thank you. I saw the first and found it very lame with all the magic, ghosts, etc. Why can't they make a good pirate movie that's set in reality?? Typical Hollywood cliche'd predictable cookie-cutter mess.

iRobot - This is my favourite book, so I went out and watched the movie in the theatre. Will Smith repulses me, and likewise so does Michael Bay, but I still had to see what it was about. Garbage. Pure garbage. There was NOTHING in the first hour that was related to the book--- at all--- so I walked out. It's like they name-dropped the book to sell seats. Susan the robot psychologist was the only character in the movie from the book. The rest was Will Smith's typical wise-crackin' smarmy piece of crap hero roleplaying. Sorry, but he is exactly the same in every single movie he's been in in the last 10 years.

---------------------------------------------------

It's hard to pick favourites, but I enjoy slice-of-life dramas that don't necessarily have huge budgets and happy endings. I also like horror movies and sci-fi (especially time travel concepts).

Primer - Great Sundance Festival movie about two guys who figure out how to go only a few days back in time. Very very confusing and thought-provoking.

UHF - Comedy classic.

Cannibal the Musical - Matt Stone and Trey Parker musical comedy based on the only man to ever be charged in America with cannibalism. They made this in art school and it's hilarious--- plus the songs are catchy.

Goodfellas - Hard hitting gangster drama. I love that whole mafia genre (Sopranos, Fargo to an extent, Casino, etc.)

The Shining - Unsettling horror--- not as good as the book, but not as bad as Kubrick said it was.

The majority of movies I like I can only watch once or twice. For example I really enjoyed The Bully when it was on TV a few years ago, but wouldn't watch it again.

Bluntly, I just can't stand those crappy action movies where there's a guy and a girl escaping from danger and they fall in love, make out while huge lizards are approaching, but you know they can't die because Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay are on board, and there's a bomb OH NOES! but they defuse it with exactly 1 second left on the enormous digital clock LCD (pffft--- like a timebomb would have a beeping digital clock in the first place), and it stars Ben Affleck, etc.

Lol, well each to his own I guess . Never seen any of the movies you mentioned though, but as you can see, I'm more into the action/drama stuff, not the horror/sci-fi .

EDIT: Oh, by the way, never read iRobot book, so I can't compare it to the movie, but I think the movie by itself (without book comparisons) is good.

LOTR is OK if your in the mood, but they do last for ages and ages and ages and ages.

Pirates of the Carribean- Yeah, I liked it Think it would be cooler if they put more interesting/unusual stuff (like fish) in it. The oceans are pretty famous for having lots of weird creatures. Plus, Keira Knightley was pretty hot in it, apart from at the start where she was really miserable looking.

IRobot - Watched it the other day. Quite cool...

Alien/Aliens/Alien3
huge fan of the series, love the acting and the entire concept behind them

Starship Troopers
Loved the plot and special effects. one of the few movies that i would watch twice in a row without a break.

Adam Sandlers Eight Crazy Nights
Funniest holiday movie ever made, and I'm a fan of Adam Sandler films.

Irobot didnt even feature the original "cities", that were the caves of steel set underground. Then they had the stupid robot thing that only related to 1 of the short stories, but was supposed to be set on a remote asteroid base talking about researching faster than light travel. It didnt even talk about the first robot, or the robot with mind reading powers, ect. It was a lame movie overall.

UHF is hilarious=D.

LOTR bored me to death, I would rather be doing things with my life...

Pirates - Good fun, watched it with a friend.

Cannibal - YES. finally another who recognizes another Matt 'n trey genius. Other recommended movie type things from them: Orgasmo (About a Mormon boy who gets in the porn industry), Basketball, and of course southpark the movie (Blame Canada!)

Guy 1: Hate is a strong word. Guy 2: I know, thats why I use it.

Requiem for a Dream, Pulp Fiction, UHF, The Princess Bride, Star Wars IV - VI, LOTR, Tommy Boy, and yes I admit that PotC was good as well. Haven't seen the second, however.

LOTR forever, baby! I actually watched the first two again yesterday. The Matrix trilogy of course, even the last one! PotC is, I believe, neat. Queen of the Damned, Spider-man - particularly the second one, Nightmare Before Christmas - I really should go and see corpses bride, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle.

There's this one film that I've been trying to find the title of for ages now, so I'll mention it. It's about this guy that I think was a private investigator who's sent to follow either this girl or this other guy. He's spying on them anyway and he sees her kill the guy so he stays on her tail for a while. He sees himself as her guardian angel or something and whenever the police are close to finding her he always creates a distraction but without letting on that he's following her. I won't say the rest just in case I spoil this nameless wonder for someone, but it's neat. It was shown on TV here a year or two ago and I'm pretty sure that it was made in America.

Any ideas as to what it is?

LOTR - I thought was really well done and I do own them, but I'm not big on fantasy movies and unlikely to ever really watch them again anytime soon.

UHF - not even gonna comment, not really sure what to say.

iRobot - I thought the previews looked really good, but I nearly fell asleep trying to watch the whole thing.

Let's see, my favorites:

- Hackers (i know its a bit cheesy, but its my fav)
- Boondock Saints (the sequel is never ever coming)
- American History X (my final psych paper was based on it)
- Italian Job (new one, the original kinda sucked)
- Exorcist
- Matrix

Aliens - Best film ever made. Full stop....
Mannequin - I used to love Kim Katrall... and I'm a sucker for 80's music...
Airplane! - C'mon...
Terminator - Love Arnie, and this is the best (not the sequels notice...)
Memento - Just watch it. Brilliant.
Anything with the Brat pack in (eg. The Breakfast Club). Again, 80's... Oh, and Demi Moore/ Ally Sheedy (gurgle....)...
Anything with Meg Ryan in (French Kiss for example)
Forget Paris - Brilliant romantic comedy. I'm a bit of a girl with romantic comedies....

Probably missed a few there...

Oh, and LOTR? Very good, but went on a bit (much like the books then). Would *much* prefer a version of the Hobbit, which apparently he is planning. Pirates I thought was a top film, and iRobot I thought was pretty good as an action film, but obviously *nothing* like the book.

Cheers

The Shawshank Redemption - You have to watch this film to truly understand how good it is. ****ing amazing film, if you don't mind me saying

The Matrix (the original was the best of course)

The Green Mile (unbelievable, yet extremely powerful film)

Mississippi Burning (excellent film citing a period of extreme racism)

Pulp Fiction - It's a Tarantino film - need I say more? (And Samuel L. Jackson in possibly his best role)

Quote: "- Italian Job (new one, the original kinda sucked)"

Huh, yeah sure No meaning to be critical of your film preferences, but you really cannot get a good Italian job unless a) It's in Italy and b) It has Michael Cane's infamous "You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!" line. The 1969 original is by far the superior

Labyrinth.
Princess Bride.
My Neighbour Totoro.
Batman Begins.
Barbarella.
Serenity.
Laputa, Castle in the Sky.
Of those, I'm not sure if Batman will stand the test of time, but I do have a terrible fondness for films where the main character is seen training their ninja-like skills.

Serenity was a great movie, too bad people never saw it. The name makes perfect sense for Firefly fans, but I think the title was poorly chosen to attract new 15-30 year old males (target audience) to the brand.

Oh yeah. Forgot that one. Probably the best sci-fi movie I've watched this century methinks. Awesome. Series was amazing too. Curse Fox (I assume) for cancelling them!!!

If you liked the Shawshank redemption then try the original book (Novella if I remember rightly). Not one that was written from the screenplay (Aliens book is word for word exactly the same as the extended version of the film), but the one that came as part of a compilation of stories that I don't remember right now. I believe the name of the story is something like "The poster of whateverhernameis". It's basically that poster he has on his wall. I think. Same bloke who wrote the Green Mile. Got run over a few years ago. Fairly well known ....

Stephen King And the original novella was "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption." Haven't had a chance to find it or read it, but I have had a gander at the Green Mile though. Both of them are definitely some of the better Stephen King adaptions

Donnie Darko - the original release NOT the directors cut.
Anchor Man - I have watched this so many times and it always makes me cry with laughter.
Fight Club - brilliant (but I am not allowed to talk about it )
Uncle Buck - although I love Planes, Trains & Automobiles too, I think this is better.
What Dreams May Come - upsetting but the visuals are incredible.
The World According to Garp - Robin Williams' best film.
Goodfellas - the best of the mafia movies.

Lots more...

The Lord of the Rings (2, 1, 3, from order of liked most to least)
And probably above all,

Evil Dead 3: Army of Darkness. Bruce Campbell rocks!

I hope I don't get laughed at. Here are some that top my list.

Most of the Marx Brothers films.
The Princess Bride (The characters were shallow but fun.)
The American President
The Fifth Element
The Longest Day. (I love well made war pictures)

Not making my list but worth a mention

Batman Begins. (Just well made and easy to watch)
Caddy Shack. (Everyone needs low brow humor sometimes)

I got a kick out of Bad Santa

My list only includes movies I own on DVD or VHS Tape.

Making nothing for the third straight year.

No one will agree with me but my favorite movie of all time is Snakes on a Plane. It's a brilliant comedy. That and Clerks(II), profane to the nth degree, but you find yourself laughing at even the most crude remarks.

yea, it was a "good" Tarantino film. A lot of his movies suck, like kill bill for instance, what cheezy rubbish.

Quote: "[Italian Job]... The 1969 original is by far the superior"

The main character was so dumb(a screw up actually) and the movie nearly put me to sleep. I normally like most original films over their remakes, but this remake I thought did a lot better.

I'd have to say, that was the first time I laughed at someone getting kicked in the nuts since I was 5yr old.

Shawshank Redemption is a good movie.

Funny how things are... I'm hard pressed to find fault in any of the 3 LOTR films, but due to the nature of the story, The Two Towers (that's 2) is the one that satisfied me less.

It's still better than anything else out there that's not the other two.

I was least satisfied with the 3rd one. The last 30min was just too rushed. It's this big lead up for some epic battle, and in a matter of minutes, an army of dead warriors sweeps the land of bad guys and the movie ends.

Nice to see some peeps here with similar tastes and appreciation for a variety of film types. My faves (in no particular order):

Aliens
Best Sci-Fi movie. Cool technological era, great acting (quite rare for Sci-Fis), the more fearsome alien/enemy there has ever been, cool space marines and weapons, very dark and industrial, relentless, imposing .. etc etc. Great dark thriller with a believable sci-fi edge and special effects that still look decent enough today.

The Shawshank Redemption
Deserves its crown as one of the greatest films of all time. Truly awesome story telling.

Touching the Void
More of a documentary film, but the single greatest survival story I have ever heard of personally. It's more far fetched than some fiction and it's a 100% true story. You can't help but watch it with amazement and think "How the f*** did he survive?".

Dawn of the Dead (original)
Pure cheese to some, but if you allow yourself to see past the old skool special effects (and some bad acting) and get involved in the sheer magnitude of the story, it's a masterpiece.

Saving Private Ryan
Still the definitive WW2 movie in my opinion. Omaha landing scene is still as powerful as ever. I love Nam movies too, but just for the portrayal of war, this movie pisses on them all, and no matter what you think of his other movies, Speilberg does direct it perfectly.

Master and Commander is quite a good movie from the period (but obviously not piratey), but I reckon a true pirate movie would just be rammed full of murder and rape. 18 certificate I reckon!

Just the opposite here for a moment, feel free to chime in on worst movies you have seen ( I denote you must have seen the movie not just heard about it or watched 5 minutes of it.), I will also avoid movies, personally, that look like they had a $500 budget.

Matrix 2: I left the theater feeling I had been mugged, it was awful awful awful.

Joe vs the volcano; I near cried watching this crappola, tell me how a trip that is supposed to take 3 weeks by boat only takes 1 week when you are drifting on your luggage?

Titanic: I know all the little girls liked it, but before I saw it I assumed (dummy) that it was still probably a good movie. All I could do was prey the boat would go down faster and put me out of my misery.

On the other side of the coin again some great movies

Schindler's List
The Toy
Finding Forrester
Last samurai

You mean...That there is no such thing as Davie Jones or the Kraken? Or magical amulets...Ha! Next you'll be saying the tooth fairy and Santa Klaus doesn't exist, you are crazy my man, extremely crazy for thinking such things...

Terminator 2 would have to be my favorite movie. Classic.
I just love the way the liquid metal guy walks

I agree The Shawshank Redemption was an excellent film.

The movie Office Space based off the 'Milton' comics was extremely hilarious, espescially the part where they totally mangle the printer

The sad fact is that i can read script, but i just cant write it.

That's fine-- it would be cool to have a pirate movie that shows them how they really are.

Titanic - I really liked this one actually. The best part of the movie was when the boat was sinking--- so cool.

- Bad Lieutenant
- Hell comes to Frogtown
- Romeo + Juliet (10 min was all I could stand, it was the worst movie by far)
