I didn't even know this could kill you! A story on CNN.com reports that a woman died from "water intoxification." Apparently, she was in a radio station contest where she was supposed to drink as much water as possible without using the bathroom. The contest, called "Hold your wee for a Wii," was held by a California radio station where the grand prize was a Nintendo Wii console. But now her only grand prize is... well... death.

So I guess the Playstation 3 isn't the only console that's caused deaths . How does a person die from water intoxification? Aren't we something like 70% water?

Anything in excess can kill you. Especially if her bladder burst.

I can see some kind of ridiculous lawsuit looming, either against Nintendo for naming it a Wii and causing such a contest to be held, or the radio station for holding such a contest, or something ridiculous like that

It would be rediculously silly if someone sued Nintendo over this... but I'm willing to bet you're right . Humans... can't live with 'em, taste like chicken.

Well, there was also the kid who was swimming in a hotel pool in Thailand, and after getting out immediately went over to his plugged in GBA. Well he died. This just happened a few weeks ago too, and you can read in the papers "Video Game Kills Child". Stupid media.

This reminds me of an incident on radio related game I heard about a few years ago where the prize was a holiday or something. Anyway, in order to win it, these people had to sit on a block of dry ice for as long as they could.

Need I say more?

omg Jeku, are you serious? That's disgusting! THAT has got to be the best example I've heard in a long time that shows just how stupid the media can be. And I'll bet you that at some point we'll end up hearing that story out of the mouth of some proponent for banning violent games . Ugh

There was a story abouyt a year ago about an intense bicycler, he biked for a year straight or something, and nearing the end of his trip he drank so much water that he just fell off his bike and died.

Heres something way creepier though:

1. Its possible to make your heart explode by bending down to do something like tie your shoe. Its an instant death, and extremely rare, but its happened.

2. In your dreams, if you die, and you truly believe you died, whether you were shot or fell off a building or were stabbed, whatever the cause, if your mind truly believes you died, your brain shuts itself down and you die in real life.

Ouch.

Your joking right? That happened to me before. But I wake up just before it happens. Or I get shot but don't actually die.
Spooky!

Ruccus...those are just insane. Number two specifically. I don't mean to argue. But that is impossible to prove. No one can know what people are dreaming. No one can know that someone dreamed about dying and died because of it.

But the water intoxication thing is completely believable. David is right, anything in excess can kill you.

An another note...it is snowing in my room. my window is open and snow is landing on my keyboard. Perhaps I should close the window...

The heart explosion can and has been proven, do a quick google search and youll find plenty of info. As for the dream sitch, Ive read about it in a few places, but I dont have any evidence to back it up so I can see what you mean. IIRC what I read stated that all of the dream induced deaths showed that the person's brain went into extreme trauma before they died, dont ask me how they found that out, couldn't tell ya.

I've heard the myth about dying in dreams before, but I'm sure it's nothing more than a myth. Maybe something we should send in to Jaime and Adam on Discovery Channel . I've died in dreams a number of times and woke up the next morning. That or this is the afterlife

I can see such an experience causing a heart attack, but shutting your brain down? Not sure how that would happen.

The funny thing about the Holding your wee for a Wii is that we did the very same thing on our radio show.

Our last show of the year, 3 months ago now, we had a 'dares live' night where people called in and dared us to do things a couple weeks before. One of which was to drink 3L of water in an hour without going to the toilet.
Chris, one of the co-hosts got this one.
Sure, he felt really bad and stuff, but he didn't die. Actually, after the hour was up, his stomach was so bloated that he had to go to the toilet and throw up, afterwards, he was fine

But yeah, while we were planning it, a few of our Paramedic and Nursing friends (at Uni where the show is aired) warned us about how he could get serious internal damage from it

I've died in my dreams before. I specifically remember the moment when I was killed, but I woke up after. The wierd part was that I just sat there with my eyes closed for about 30 seconds after I assume I woke up thinking "so this is what death is like?"

It's entirely possible, I know someone who went clubbing and took a couple of E's, she thought it'd be alright if she drank plenty of water (as water's supposed to dilute the effects of drugs/alcohol). Unfortunately, she drank too much water and died of water intoxication - it had nothing to do with her bladder bursting or not going to the bathroom, she simply drank too much too quickly and it upset the balance in her system.

I've heard that story quite a few times around here. One of which involved a ridiculous 12liters of water, but I think someone got their numbers wrong.

To die from water intoxication, you would have to have other problems as well, most probably a lack of salt. Maybe she stopped eating as well. I guess they should have given them a medical before they started.

Your brain tells you that you need to "relieve yourself" when your bladder is around 25% full. And you'll pee yourself long before it becomes a health risk.

Not sure what it is called exactly, but hundreds of people die every year from Drowning in their own bodies. The body just retains the water and it kills you. A friend of my wife's sister(or cousin I forget) died from this a few years ago. It is something that effects pregnant women mostly.

here is an article on water intoxication itself.

The DJ's were fired for it. I guess I could see it as a simple mistake, I mean I had no idea water could kill you until this story came around. Not that I feel bad for the DJ's or anything, and not that I'm backing them up or anything, I'm just saying I could see this as being a mistake. I wonder if the girl's family got a Wii because of this?

Firing the DJ's is a weak attempt to fix PR. The contest must have been approved by the radio station, and with the rarity of death from water intoxification, unless the DJ's were doctors and knew about such a thing.

The DJs knew FULL well that there have been cases of people dying from doing this. They even had callers call up warning them, and the DJs were joking saying it's ok because they signed releases.

The woman's stomach was protruding out from her hips, and the DJs were joking asking if she's going to pass out.

I can't see how someone would hold their bladder to the point the'd die. Isn't their some bladder muscle that makes you pee yourself if you drink enough water, no matter how hard you try not to?

You're joking aren't you? I've died in a dream before. I tripped and fell into a fire. I woke up very very hot, it was almost as if I were in a real fire.

My friend almost did that once. He was at a baseball game, saw a giant marshmellow, ate it, and woke up eating his pillow.

I think the most interesting thing here is that the mother's surname is 'Strange', not unlike the cause of her death.
